Advice for a newbie?

Advice

Hello, I've been invited to a Pathfinder game. I have experience roleplaying, but not with this system. I did get a chance to sit in a game (2 hours, solid combat), look at a character sheet (made no sense to me), and glance at a book. Is it as combat oriented as it seemed to be? How much flexibility and variety is there in creating a character? Are there supplemental books that expand upon races and classes or is the main book it? Any random bits of advice for a newbie?

Welcome to the game,

No the game is not all combat orientated but this will also depend very much upon the style of game your GM runs. Some are heavier than others …

The Core rule book is big but it is one of many with the Advanced Race guide, Ultimate Combat, Ultimate Magic and Advanced Players guide being the main ones.

You get a lot of flexibility with characters but again this all depends if the extra books are allowed and what sort of game is being run.

This is all things your GM should be telling you. Speak to them and find out which books they approve and go from there. If all the books are approved without 3rd party then you have a huge number of variants to choose from. If 3rd party is approved then this is squared.

Have fun and hope this helps.

Hi!
I shouldnt worry about the character sheet - you'll get used to it when youve used one.
Lets look at your questions in turn.

1. The amount of combat is really down to your GM - some run combat heavy other not so much - in my campaigns (and I think most) some sessions have lots and some have none at all, depending on whats going on in the story etc.

2. The system is pretty rich - characters can be pretty wildly varied depending on how they are built.

3. There are plenty of supplemental books that increase the variety in creating a character, including races and classes, but again its down to your GM as to which you can use.

Hints and tips is harder, have you any idea what kind of character you might want to play?
Best advice is have a chat with the GM raise your concerns and establish what kind of game they run.

Edit: gah! Sic beat me to the punch!
