Ride an Ape?

Is it even possible to make a druid with an ape animal companion which is used as a mount? Say you run with a halfling or gnome druid. Is this PFS doable?

Just be sure you either teach it the Riding general purpose or the appropriate tricks, and get an exotic saddle for it. In the wild you see apes carrying their offspring like that all the time. Well, without the saddle, that is.

It is, but the Ape becomes large at level 4, which might make maneuverability a problem.

I can't find anything stating there's a penalty for having a mount 2 sizes larger than you. Can someone weigh in on that?

In the ride skill, you'll have to look out for "fast mount/dismounting" your ape if it is two size categories larger than you.

You can attempt to mount or dismount from a mount of up to one size category larger than yourself as a free action, provided that you still have a move action available that round. If you fail the Ride check, mounting or dismounting is a move action. You can't use fast mount or dismount on a mount more than one size category larger than yourself.

So essentially, it just takes you longer to get on your Ape steed if he's that much bigger than you. But aside from that, I think you're fine.

Nice thread title. I have nothing more to add.

Cool, thanks for the info all.

If you are going to use the Ride Skill, don't forget your -5 to your skill check for a creature that is ill suited as a mount. That is on top of the -5 if you don't have a saddle. I don't know how saddles for exotic creatures work for PFS.

Anyone have any opinions on how to judge whether an animal is "ill suited as a mount", as per the Ride skill?

I'd say anything that humans haven't ridden historically. Like apes, snakes, or crocodiles.

Usually not a good deal, but I believe you do not have to accept the evolution in size though. You can keep it the same size and instead take the +2 dex/con.

Well if you keep the Ape Medium you have to be careful with Encumbrance. An Ape Companion only has a 13 Str which means anything above 50 pounds brings you into heavier loads which will slow down the ape and everything else that comes with encumbrance.

With a Large creature you can double the carrying capacity and you add +8 to the str.

Or big cats, boars and bears, presumably?

I think its interesting we denote Humans here, I was thinking of having a Gnome druid ride a Dire Bat around, the bat is a medium creature and becomes large later at 4. I believe Ultimate Equipment even lists Riding Bats as available purchases.

I wonder how that would work for PFS though, if the bat would still be considered exotic.

I tied it to humans because I was thinking of the real world and what people actually rode. For example, people have ridden horses, elephants, etc. People have not ridden lions or tigers. Of course in Golarion, certain race / mount relations might make lion and tiger mounts "non-exotic."

Ah understandable, I kind of figured that's where you going with it. I think for rules though, I'd love if there was a list of what's considered an exotic mount in Golarion.

Relating to what Dragonmoon said, some mounts take a penalty for being ill fitted. For PFS I'd like to know what animals specifically take that penalty or is it going to be a GM discretion sort of deal.

Of course we could be realistic here and of course say; snake, crocodile, most of the vermin. I am wondering about the creatures that could be strong enough to easily carry a small or medium creature at medium or large size. Such as some of the dinosaurs.

@Dragnmoon: Remember that if they give up the size change, they still get some stat bumps, including a +2 to Str, IIRC.

@Walter: I have know people in the real world who have ridden dogs. Human people. Admittedly it was a smallish female on a largish Great Dane, including saddle bags...
