Hero Lab is now available in the iPad app store!
This first version of Hero Lab for the iPad is an in-play character sheet for Pathfinder, available for free! You can create your character on your desktop or laptop, and then move it to the iPad for use during the game. You can find more information in our November newsletter.

Mead Gregorisson got it - Hero Lab doesn't run on the iPad 1 because of a lack of memory. :(
The original iPad has precious little of it and Pathfinder is monstrous. So we were unable to squeeze the entirety of Pathfinder into a tiny enough footprint to cram it all into an original iPad.
We're still working on that, and we have some ideas of things to pursue, but we aren't certain it will be enough and we didn't want to withhold the tool from everyone else while we tried to figure this out. Ultimately, we may not be able to solve the memory issue, since Pathfinder continues to grow at a prodigious rate. We simply don't know at this point in time, but we're working on it.

I like it. Though it is stuck using iTunes which is bleh. I can get files on it no problems via email or dropbox, but seems to lack method for me to delete a file from the character sheet app itself, unless I'm totally missing something besides the usual swipe-to-the-side method for iOS apps.
Actually making it cloud-supported would be ideal since I'd be able to update a character file from the iPad, save it via cloud, and have it updated for laptop, since I keep all the character files uploaded on dropbox. ANYTHING to avoid iTunes lol

Extremely disappointed that the Hero Lab app does not support iPad 1's. As a very loyal customer of Hero Labs I feel like my business is not important. I had followed development of this app and never was it mentioned that it would not work on iPad 1's.
It was mentioned a goodly time ago that it wouldn't work on an iPad 1. This is why I upgraded mine. Without the driving force of Herolab, I likely would have just stuck to the old clunker for a while yet.

I have been having a couple of issues with the app.
First of all it really doesn't like large portfolios. I didn't know about this and transferred by PFS portfolio into it, and it wouldn't point at the character chosen a significant amount of the time. Even after I chopped down the portfolio it persisted in this error. I resorted to single character portfolios to make sure it worked. Works fine as long as you do that.
Well I should say mostly works fine. For some reason one of my characters flat out doesn't work. Just trying to view him crashes the program. I don't think there's anything really odd on him, as he's just a paladin/fighter. If he's in his own portfolio, it crashes the software on load. If he's in a larger one, it crashes if I select him. Kind of odd really.
Though I do like the app and expect to get a lot of use from it. Of course it would come out the one week I don't play any PFS.

Not working on the iPad 1 is disappointing but unsurprising. Made my nine-year-old daughter (who just inherited an iPad 1) happy. :)
Pulled it down on the wife's iPad 3 and it has promise, but the current build is very buggy and unpolished. At best, I'd call it a beta. If it matures enough to reach its potential, it may be enough to retire my Nexus 7.

Can you let us know (either here or at support@wolflair.com) which bugs you're running into? We've had a few reported, such as the "wrong hero being selected" and "no way to delete portfolios from inside the app" we'll be tackling, but if you've run into others, we'd love to hear about them.

Just spending a few minutes with the App, I noticed:
1. When making journal entries, the formatting (inheritance?) on the date fields is inconsistent. At least one of them defaults to the year "0000', whereas the next one over does not.
2. Excessive text in some fields (like the melee weapon entries) doesn't produce a new line or result in scroll bars, but instead wraps back to the beginning of the same line and overlaps previously rendered text.
3. It crashed on me (not useful, and I didn't try to reproduce, but definitely affected my impressions given the short time I tried it out).
This was on a 32GB iPad 3rd gen, no cell.
Hope that helps. I enjoy Hero Lab and the prospect of running it on an iPad is very promising.

I've tried to get it to work on my ipad 2, but it won't load because I haven't upgraded to iOS6 (I love Google maps too much to let it go). Any chance of a compatible version?
Umm Google maps has had an app out now for a while, you just need to upgrade your IOS and then download the new app. The same thing for YouTube.

Theres a Google map for the iPhone, but it scales up really badly on the iPad. If I'm missing an iPad specific one though please send me a link!

I use EggMaps. Specifically for iOS and uses Google Data.

1. Guilty - that's something we didn't have time to do well for 1.0. :( I'm going to work out a better way of entering game dates.
2. A fix for this for weapons is on our list for next release. Was there anywhere else you noticed it?
3. Can you tell me what you were trying to do when the crash occurred? Even just knowing what you were doing would help us fix it for the future.
Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the suggestion - I'm going to check it out!

TwoWolves, how's Hero Lab working out for you on the surface pro? The screen is pretty small, how usable is it?
I also installed HeroLab on my Surface Pro (bought a 3rd license just to do that!). It works fine. Surface Pro has a *very* high resolution screen for its size (1080p), so it ships with Desktop Scaling set to 150% by default. Hero Lab handles that just fine.
It's obviously not touch-optimized, but it's still pretty awesome to be able to make characters while sitting on the couch ;-) And the pen input helps tremendously in terms of touch accuracy.
The main problem I have with it is that it's a pain switching to the keyboard (virtual or otherwise) when I need to type in something like a character name or Profession (Other).
Even so, a Metro-style Windows app would be super cool! Not that you don't have enough on your plate already ;-)

The screen isn't that small, but it is sharp, and scaling to 150% has been just fine. I will certainly second Tamago's opinion of the stylus, it is awesome. Intuitive, simple, beats a trackpad and in many cases it beats using a mouse. You can "hover" and right-click with it, so it's almost a complete mouse replacement.
I will also second Tamago's complaint about the virtual keyboard. Not every program will automatically call it up when you tap or poke the box with the stylus, leading you to swipe the charms bar in and tap the keyboard icon to bring it up. Hopefully this will soon be patched, because the actual virtual keyboard isn't bad, and it's handwriting recognition with the stylus is pretty good.
Even though HL is not touch optimized, it does still respond well to touch. Just touch the tab, the "?" icons, or the upper pane of a window to switch, open or drag it around. It works fine, it's just that the stylus is pin-point sharp, and my fingers, alas, are not.
I will admit, I did spring for a mini port to HDMI adapter, but that's mainly so I can use my 55" HD TV as a second monitor ;)

Doesn't the keyboard just come up automatically when you put the cursor into an edit control? I would have thought that was built into the OS, unless you had an external keyboard connected...
You would think that. But it seems kind of flaky whether it comes up or not. I'm constantly having to manually invoke it on the Surface, but my Samsung touch-screen laptop (with a permanently-attached keyboard) somehow triggers the virtual keyboard way more than it should (meaning, ever).

Another hat in the ring for Android OS. I use a Toshiba Thrive 10.1 tablet during my games with the srd up for rules questions, lots of pics to share with the group, etc. We have been using Herolab to generate PCs and just purchased all the supplements - kaching! Would love to see it for Android but in the mean time I use my laptop with HDMI out to a 32" tv.

I don't do fruit. I might be interested if they come out with an Android based version that way I can run it on my Transformer. Yeah, Microsoft stole the idea of the Surface from Asus.
I love my Transformer Prime from Asus!!
Once I have Hero Lab fully functional on it, I will not need anything else to take with me to play Pathfinder.I currently just keep my pdf of my characters from Hero Lab. I have the pdf rules and several apps. Portable heaven!!

I just picked up a Transformer Infinity a month ago. One question, are you having problems opening PDF files. It seems to take a while for me and scrolling is slow on it as well. Also I can't switch between files on the fly. Am I missing something?

Any eta on getting it on Android.
I have a whole table full of people that all have Android tablets that will throw money at you when you make us the app!
Very surprised you guys went with apple first when Android has so much more of the market.
Did Steve Jobs leave you something in his will....../grumble grumble
Just Kidding, love Hero Labs!

I use Adobe Reader and MyLibrary to view my pdf files. I wish there was a smoother way to toggle between files but that is what I use the "recents" tab to do. I just clck recent, then it takes me to that list and then I go the file wanted. It is nice and it will even keep the last page open for me.
I also use the stacked window option on the bottom left to toggle quickly between files and PFRPG RD (Great app if you have not already purchased it) and my browser, etc.
Please, please work on Hero Lab for Android soon!

This is answered in our FAQ. Spoiler alert: Unexpected bequests from tycoons are not involved. :(

Is this something that a KickStarter type crowdfunding event would help to motivate?
I mean I am already in for the base package and maxed out on licenses and I have every package or update purchased for Pathfinder, but I could see throwing something more Wolf Lair's direction to help speed up the process. Just saying...

I got to use the app in an actual gaming session Saturday. Really, really like it. The fact that I can pop on spell effects and conditions is absolutely wonderful. I picked up an iPad Mini for this app alone. I'm not an Apple fan and until now have only used Android tablets. I prefer smaller tablets but have even considered getting a full sized iPad now that I've seen how useful the app actually is!
The only problems I've had are some custom files not working. Had two custom loads from the community files that crashed out the program. Said something about file had already been replaced or something. Not a big problem as all of my custom content works perfectly (or at least it has now that I figured out how to get my .user files on there.)
