[Jehova's Arena, Test] Fight the Twenty-Ninth, Bruno vs. m'Shimu

Play-by-Post

Bruno and Esmeralda, probably fairly bummed after their chance at reaching the second tier of combat was cruelly snatched away by Kirk the Meanie, enter to see a new face across the sand. They take their spots to the north as the strange snake-guy stares at them from the south.

Bruno A10, Esmeralda AB1112, m'Shimu L10. Initiatives and other nonsense now.

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

Bruno lifts his lance skyward with confidence, but a little less flamboyantly. He does little crowd-pleasing as he steels himself for this chance at redemption.

dice:

init: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22

Init:22

ROLG THE RED

Out of the darkness of the southern entrance – in a strangely confident, sauntering, gliding gait – strides what is surely one of the stranger gladiators the crowds have seen. Two beady, black snake eyes stare unblinkingly and with an unsettling intelligence across the sands at Bruno… a bifurcated tongue flicking to test the air every few moments. The creature, some unnatural-looking marriage of humanoid and snake, is over six feet tall and athletically built. Its lamellar armor is painted to mimic the black and red mottling of its scales, and otherwise it wears little additional clothing.

The walking snake plants the butt of a well-made but exotic longspear – held in a long fingered hand gauntleted in hardened leather decorated with huge, wicked-looking snake fangs (spiked gauntlet) – in the sand at its feet. In its other hand it carries a javelin, which it spins idly as it stops walking forward… a disturbingly human gesture. Over its shoulder and on its back it wears a handful of other slings and quivers containing a variety of shortspears and javelins, and tucked into its belt is a spell component pouch and a ceremonial skull-piercer (mwk punching dagger).

"Well, ssssssshit," the strange creature hisses, his tongue still testing the air, "It'ssss the camel jockey. Thisss ssshould be interesssting."

Arbiter:
Initiative 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14

Initiative 14... you're up. (Braces for impact)

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

Unfortunately, I can't charge on suprise round anymore.

dice:

ride: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

Bruno mounts and Eamaralda takes a step to the right, clearing the lane. Bruno levels his lance and yells, Have at ye, Snake-Kebab! before launching his customarily disgusting wad of phlegm at his foe.

Snake up.

ROLG THE RED

Why no surprise charge? Just the need to mount first?
:: Surprise Round ::

m'Shimu curiously watches the spit globule hit the sand, flicking his tongue a few times before raising its beady eyes back to his opponent.

In a strange, halting gait, he jogs behind the pillar to his right.

Arbiter:
Check your PM

1d20 ⇒ 14

Move to K.12, where you lose sight of him (Perception could remedy this, though)

Bruno's up

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

All companions and familiars start to the left. Because of that, Esmeralda starts behind a pillar. The rules state that I can't 5' step and charge, so I must mount and move. If it wasn't this way, I would be able to win most of my fights in the surprise round.

Bruno harrumphs and directs Esmeralda who trots to the right, staying at range, just in case.

move to E-F/6-7, turn ended

ROLG THE RED

Ooooooooohhhh… yah, that stinks. A halfling charger could do it. I'm sure that makes you happy to hear, though.
.
:: Round 1 ::

Nothing seems to happen.

Arbiter:
Check your PM, again

1d20 ⇒ 4

Nothing apparent happens (Perception is still an option)

Nope, not high enough. Let me know when it's my turn again.

EDIT: my strat is to have Bruno die of dehydration. :P

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

Bruno continues the search for his enemy.

ROLG THE RED

:: Round 2 ::

Suddenly a javelin is streaking towards Bruno from the center of the arena. You swear the snake-man winked (even if that is physically impossible) before he once again vanishes.

Arbiter:

Swift to vanish
Check your PM (again)

Javelin throw 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 3 + 2 = 25 <-- CRIT?

Throw javelin (from F.10) at a flat-footed Bruno, then vanish
Attack 25, Damage 9
Crit Confirm 22, Total Crit Damage 15

Bruno's up

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

Ouch!
The javelin pierces Bruno right through the shoulder of his shield arm, passing through the muscle and tearing a great gash in his chain mail. With a curse and a grunt he scans the sand, hoping to spot something to strike at.

Dice:

preception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Preception, E.: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

preception:18
And Esmeralda:10

ROLG THE RED

:: Round 3 ::

Once again, the arena falls quiet.

Arbiter:
Check your PM (again)

1d20 ⇒ 2

Sorry, again, nothing obvious.

Another perception please, Bruno.

Esmeralda:18

ROLG THE RED

Neither of those quite hit the DC, but they were dangerously close.
:: Round 4 ::

A second javelin hisses through the air before the snake man once again disappears.

Arbiter:
Javelin throw
Vanish

Bruno's up

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

Bruno takes another hit. He howls and starts moving, hoping to run into his foe somewhere.

move h.12
Bruno preception:23
Esmeralda:23
If either of them spot the snake, alter move to close to attack range for Bruno's lance. Will roll attack if that happens.

dice:

b: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
e: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23

ROLG THE RED

:: Round 5 ::

This time it's the point of the snake's Longspear that darts out from center arena, aiming for a gap in Bruno's armor. Once again it vanishes immediately.

A javelin lies abandoned center arena.

Arbiter:
Longspear attack.
Vanish
Check your PM

Longspear 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
---> Damage 1d8 + 6 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + 6 + (5) = 16

1d20 ⇒ 14

Longspear attack on Bruno from F.10, then disappear
Attack 18, damage 16

Bruno's up

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

Bruno deflects the blow with his bloodied shield arm and counters where the spear came from.

Attack into f10.
Attack:22
Damage:12

dice:

Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
damage: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12

ROLG THE RED

Is that a readied attack or your round 6 action? And that's your flat-footed AC? Might want to update your description, cause scale mail plus a large shield would make it 17, right?

Bruno Bullrush: Smelly Dwarf astride a smelly camel. Win:2 Loss:6 Rep: 3

That was my round 6 action, but I forgot about your attack being vs. my flat-footed AC, which means you exactly match it for the hit, lucky duck.
Bruno is down.

ROLG THE RED

Yah, lucky indeed. That 12 pt strike would have put a major ding in m'Shimu.

As the dwarf slumps in his saddle, the arena is still for a few seconds... the snake remaining invisible.

Then the spear strikes again. And again. And again. With the dwarf unconcious and unable to defens himself, every quick strike finds a crack in the armor.

Apparently satisfied that the dwarf is dead, the snake steps near, forked tongue flicking a few times along the dwarf's near leg.

Finally, it makes a slow turn, unblinking eyes once again taking in the crowds before it gives a gesture that is eerily human... lifting his blood-slick longspear over its head in victory.

Then it lopes its way back through its arena entrance with its strange, halting gait.
