Advice

My party is in a Kyonin like settings (home-made campaign) and in the middle of a corrupted section of an elven magical forest.
The general plot should involve a fey turned evil and wanting to destroy the habitat and its occupant (other feys, tribes of various monstrous humanoids).
I was searching through the bestiaries and believe i found the perfect creature for what i need; the Nuckelavee (bestiary 3 pp 203); my doubts are:
How the hell is it pronounced (English not being my mother lang) ?
What would be an interesting and challenging way to use it?

The party doing this quest :
Aasimar paladin 8
Human fighter 8
Dwarf cleric of Pharasma 8
Half elf wizard (invocker) 8
Half elf druid 8
Tiefling rogue 8

Of course the main creature should not be alone, given the power of the party.I'm still fleshing out the details but would like some advices to make it more fun.

nuckelaVEE?

Grand Lodge

Nuckelavee.

i hear that he's big and evil and heinous.

also remember, with a party that big its going to get mobbed and action economied to death. tack some minions on if you're not planning to to be a pushover.

The PCs have to help civilized settlements assaulted by marsh giants and boggards.
The nuckelavee have been spawned by corruption spreaded on purpose by invading drows (the PCs don't know this yet) and attacked the boggards to further enhance their hate.
The drows then placed false evidences to drive the tribes against the elves and humans.
The main enemies should be marsh giants and boggard (giants can retain their CR, boggards will be augmented) at first, then the nuckelavee with one or two giants he brought to his side (maybe too hard?).

Have the characters encountered one before? I presume not. And just because its official name is a pain to pronounce, who's to say what the local elves call it? Make up another name for it, or just call it a "Forest Corrupter" or something (translated from elven). Don't make life hard on yourself by trying to pronounce something you don't want to. Also, name obfuscation is a fantastic tool to prevent players from reading up game stats.

For myself, I pronounce it NOOK-ell-uh-VEE.

For the other questions, I'll leave that to others.

By RAW your group's APL is 12 for calculating encounter CR. ;)

I thought with 6 ppl the CR was APL+1 = 8+1 =9

48 levels/4 = 12

Turin, you may want to read over the APL section again.

The calculated CR is indeed 9, which allows for up to CR 12 if you want a really tough encounter... But remember, CR and APL are just a starting point to get you in the right ballpark! There is no substitute for a quick look over the PC's and NPC's statblocks with some insight into your players' tactics.

CR is a helpful tool for GMs, but it is very far from infallible.

Since the historical Nuckelavee is said to have black blood, how about using the Black Blood of Orv?

Have the creature have found a way to create a spring of the blood on the surface, with the attending mutations and rise in undead.

Good idea, am also looking for ways to send the party into the Darklands (or equivalent)
