I know best is relative, but i'm only looking for opinions. Kingmaker is specifically because it has build periods. I haven't played Kingmaker, so no spoilers please. However, i can see how an artifice cleric would fit in well, or a druid, and yes of course wizards would fit well.
The question is for those who have played and to a lesser extend those that haven't which caster type (s) is (are) best for Kingmaker and why do you think so?

I'd suggest a universalist wizard, mainly because of the bonus feats you can use for discoveries and crafting feats.
There's a lot of downtime in KM, which means you'll be able to do a lot of crafting. A universalist wizard means you'll have the broadest spell selection in the game.
YOu might want to talk things over with your party, and have everybody agree to take a crafting feat they are capable of. Maybe the paladin will do arms and armor, the cleric will do wands, and the ranger will do potions. THat leaves you free to do Staves, Wondrous Items, Rings and Scrolls, but you can leave room free for Wizard discoveries, too.
Remember that any spellcaster can contribute the spells needed to make a magic item, so the Cleric can craft a wand of Knock even if he doesn't have the spell, as long as someone can cast it.

Charisma can be especially useful in Kingmaker. We had a sorceress and oracle of life in our group, and that worked out well for us.
+1 on Kingmaker being conducive to crafting magic items.
To an extent, you have the ability to use any primary score to help the group. But if you want to be King (or queen or whatever) Charisma is the way to go.
But more generally, if you want to be king, think about the kind of kingdom you want and go from there:
My group had a haven for fey, forest creatures, and chelaxian slave runaways. But if you wanted a darker feel, you could be a bones oracle or necromancer and make it a place for undead, etc.
KIngmaker is a sandbox, so really the themes you bring to the table really make the game.

Definitely seconding Druid. Witch for much the same reasons.
Wizard for crafting. This applies for Psion as well if you use the Dreamscarred stuff.
Oracles make great rulers (my group's Duchess is a Spellscar Oracle). I presume the same would go for Sorcerers and Wilders (though the Wilder's flavor kind of makes that questionable).
Lots of diplomatic stuff where a Bard or Inquisitor would shine. Bards also make great rulers (as do Paladins if the group is good).

In our Kingmaker, with cohorts and everything, we had a Psion, an Oracle, a sorcerer, a Bard, a Summoner, and a Paladin. All our classes had a great time and filled a role on the kingdoms (we split the group into two cooperative kingdoms). The Psion crafted and was king of one kingdom, the oracle healed and was the High Priest, the Bard buffed and handled the diplomatic issues, the summoner was queen to a fighter King, the Paladin was General

Kingmaker is often only 1 encounter per day, which makes spont casters way more powerful in my opinion. You can toss all of your spells without to much worry most of the time (aka go nova).
And since Charisma is pretty important in Kingmaker, I would suggest sorc or oracle. I played an enchanter based sorc (sylvan bloodline) and really enjoyed it. Dominations, charms, sleeps, and so on.
