So, I am running Rise of the Runelords, and I ran into a small dilemma. My party ran into three shadows, which they ended up fighting. By the end of the combat, the Halfling Cavalier ends up dropping to 0 Strength. So...I wasnt sure if he was actually dead, or just was unconscious due to this entry I found in the PRD...
For every 2 points of damage you take to a single ability, apply a –1 penalty to skills and statistics listed with the relevant ability. If the amount of ability damage you have taken equals or exceeds your ability score, you immediately fall unconscious until the damage is less than your ability score. The only exception to this is your Constitution score. If the damage to your Constitution is equal to or greater than your Constitution score, you die. Unless otherwise noted, damage to your ability scores is healed at the rate of 1 per day to each ability score that has been damaged. Ability damage can be healed through the use of spells, such as lesser restoration.
That would lead me to believe that, like Hit Points, he wasnt actually dead until he reached negative his Strength number, am I correct in that or not? I decided to let him get by this time, but I would like to know for future instances...

Here:
Strength measures muscle and physical power. This ability is important for those who engage in hand-to-hand (or “melee”) combat, such as fighters, monks, paladins, and some rangers. Strength also sets the maximum amount of weight your character can carry. A character with a Strength score of 0 is too weak to move in any way and is unconscious. Some creatures do not possess a Strength score and have no modifier at all to Strength-based skills or checks.

First, USE SPOILERS. Or don't mention the AP as it has no relevance to the question.
Second, you should read the monsters you use. Not to be snarky, but you didn't run the combat properly.
Strength Damage (Su) A shadow's touch deals 1d6 points of Strength damage to a living creature. This is a negative energy effect. A creature dies if this Strength damage equals or exceeds its actual Strength score.
And
Create Spawn (Su) A humanoid creature killed by a shadow's Strength damage becomes a shadow under the control of its killer in 1d4 rounds.

I am in a RotRL game right now. I know shadows. I know what APL they should show up in. I know what APL 3 shadows should show up in. Now I know to expect shadows.
Why is it wrong to want to go into the AP fresh? I don't want any out of character knowledge.
It's doubly annoying as the fact this was in RotRL has no relevance whatsoever.

So yeah basically you dun goofed. He should've been killed and then brought back.

Maybe it's just the ones I've played in, but Shadows have show up in part 3 of every AP I've played. Think of this as practice for not metagaming.

Thanks for the help guys. Sorry about the "spoiler" thing, but seriously...its common place monsters. Anyway, I dont feel too bad about not having him die because as it stands, he is a Cavalier, and my party made a pretty fair argument about me never targetting his boar mount in combat, so its fine. Next time, his life will be mine!!!
Its amazing how much players complain when you put their characters at the brink of death...

Maybe now your GM changes them into something else :P
p.s.: flagged it for a spoiler tag, seriously, mentioning the AP is quite unnecessary here, and even if it weren't using a spoiler tag doesn't hurt.

Note that this is not relevant to strength damage, as ability damage does not actually lower the affected ability score, so STR damage will never cause you to have 0 STR.
