Can we put a little 150-character box on each item where you can put down notes saying why you voted for or against the item? Ideally it would display this info if you ran into the item again, but that's really unnecessary. The big item is that the item's owner would then see these notes after the fact.
The big thing I'm seeing is that it would make the post-announcement "critique my item" threads capable of being a little more in-depth, instead of "template use; template use; bad prereqs".
That's a great idea. It increase the amount of feedback an item would get by a ton!
I'm a little bit worried that there'd be abuse of a system like this. We wouldn't want hopefuls getting dozens of "this suxx0rs" messages as feedback. It'd also be a large amount of feedback which, well, isn't public.
OTOH, I can certainly see the value. My critiques always rely on capturing my initial reaction; we'd also get critiques looking much more like the "judges' chamber" comments we've seen previous years. There's value in that.
On the third hand (hello, I have three hands!), this might be a major addition to task the site with. Feedback is currently as shallow or as deep as we, the community, write it. And we're pretty awesome, when all's said and done. This would be a nice-to-have, but I'm starting to worry we're getting spoiled rotten :P

That's a very cool idea, but I do worry about the overhead of implementing that sort of system, and I also worry about the sort of feedback it might encourage, as anonymity can encourage people to be harsher than they would when their feedback is public and attached to their forum name.

This would only add to the overhead, but perhaps the comments are attached to the login...they just aren't public until after round 1 is over. This could make it possible for the admins to open the critique my item thread(s) have the items posted as links to the reviews. Or it could be for only the top 32.

You could always make feedback attach to the forum name, and a person only gives feedback knowing it will not be anonymous.
For the cost, I am unfortunately not able to think of a way to make it free....

Volunteers! They are free.
I don't have the knowledge so someone else will have to do it :)
I think this would be very interesting - people can add comments to the items as they see them, and then when the round is done all comments on all items become visisble.
Of course, that causes a new problem of everyone being forced to have their item and all feedback visible... Adding an option to make it publicly visible would cause more work... making it so you can find your own item is also more work... etc.
I mean, I'd love to see this implented, but there's a ton of potential work involved.
