I remember quite a few that I really loved, and look forward to getting to tell them why. Harder will be pointing out why a good few of them really didn't stack up all the way. It never came up for me during voting and I'm fairly sure that I may have submitted it before correcting one of the most embarrassingly half-baked sentences I've ever had the misfortune of concocting.

I voted the Thassilon Crown down no less than six times during the post-cull phase. Any item that instantly makes a large, full-level-spread type of encounter a non-issue is a Bad Thing (tm). The idea of making all giants neutral to friendly struck me as a -very- bad idea.

Yep. well, at least you remembered it :)

I did think it might be a bit much, but I thought as it's only one subtype it might be ok. Plus I didn't think neutral negated the encounter as neutral people could still attack unless I've misunderstood that, but I guess even having to explain my reasoning puts it at a big loss in a competition. I'd been playing through Rise of the Runelords with my Infernal Sorcerer and quite enjoying beating powerful enemies with my level 1 charm person spell. Nevermind. Always next year :)

My item is not on that list. I saw it once before the cull.

I may be a bearer of bad news then. I do remember your item, pre-cull. I saw it more than any other item during that period, so much so, I kept track of how many times I saw it (30+). I never voted for it. I don't remember why, but it rubbed me wrong somehow. I look forward to seeing you post it in the critique thread.

Thanks Raphael. It's must appreciated. I have to admit it was a little bit of a SAK, however, it came from a couple of places that I loved. One of them being the old Dragonlance games we used to play where Gnomes where more tinkerers and engineers, rather than illusionists and fey creatures. Unfortunately, it would seem that my item must have gotten chunked in the BAD pile fairly early on. Oh well. There's always next go around.

The humming spanner was a bit of a multi tool. It offered a competence bonus on certain types of crafting checks (trap making, gunsmithing, etc.) as it would magically seal small working pieces together. It also allowed you to close something as per Hold Portal and unlock things as per knock. Finally it gave a competence bonus to disable device checks, and if you had the ability to disable magical traps from another source then you could use the spanner for that as well. It could be used by anyone, but were created specifically by gnomes.

Additionally it made humming and whirring noises when being used that could be detected with a DC 5 perception check. Hence the "Humming" part of the Humming Spanner. If a gnomish invention wasn't overly complicated or made unnecessary noise, then it's not much of a gnomish invention!

Admittedly, I am a fan of The Doctor, so a bit of the design was very similar to the Sonic Screwdriver. I pulled from a few sources when I wrote it up.

I kinda fell in love with the concept, let me know if you want more I did actually start tinkering with that. BEsides who wouldn't as a GM want to throw Werewolf templated trolls at a party?

Its hard to provide feedback on an item I haven't seen in like 3+ weeks.
