Just a few thoughts.

I am awesome at the things I am awesome at.

Item design and/or judging is apparently not part of my skill set :)

I've been resisting this thread but I must mention my guilty pleasure. I don't remember the specific name but it created plant goblins that produced more plant goblins. Every time it came up for voting, I smiled even if it didn't win the matchup.

Guess I really missed the mark with my Athame...perhaps it was too single classed...though any spell casting class could use it. I felt it would be great in the hands of players and enemies alike

@ Jon congrats on your making top 32: you're speaking of the mandrake something or other it has several mentions in this thread I up voted it a few times myself.

@Xaaon I remember an athane, can't recall specifics post it in the critique thread when its open...

Mushroom Goblin was it I think

Soooo, Clark... can we ask if our item made the Top 89?

The Pillars Dexter, here. I never saw it after the cut, which was a serious bummer given how many times I saw some other items. just wondering.

I don't believe I ever saw The Pillars Dexter.

I could post the stats, of course, but I believe we were told not to ;). All I can say is I thought it more solidly designed and cooler in usage then when I won last year...but not as simple.

Looks like back to the drawing board next year!

That was mine. I'm just glad someone liked it :)

To everyone who liked the Nautilus Pack of Tangled Tentacles bless your hearts. I was very much in love with the item since the flash of inspiration through multiple executions all the way to announcement. I'll get it critiqued later but to everyone who liked it, or wants to add it to their campaign thank you. I hope it hit the top 90 at least.

The pillars is a single glove that had abilities that interacted with the four 'pillars' that support universal school spellcasting - artifice, alchemy, arcane bond, and universal school spell like abilities.

Had a longer post, but that should jog the memory, if you saw it.

Yeah, I'm guessing some reasons people didn't like my Mantle of the Flesh Bound Soul, but I guess it'll have to wait for the critique my item thread. It is however, driving me crazy that I never saw it after the cull.

I really liked the Shroud of Certain Return, Vest of Mongrelkind, First Light, Winter's Clutch, Gloves of Saturation, Immediate Chant, Blackbriar Boots, Cauldron of the Perilous Pact, Scalpel of Transfiguration, and Siegebreaker Cymbals.

Most of my voting wasn't done at home, so I didn't save anything. There was a cherry blossom orchid thing that could make your enemy seppuku himself that I thought was very well written with some great imagery. Maybe people thought it was a little OP. Then there was another one that helped with summoning that was really good, I think it applied a template. Thought it filled a niche very well and had a very tight design but unfortunately, I only saw it once near the end. I also liked the swarmbane gauntlets. While not flashy, I thought they were pretty sound. Finally, I have to say, I liked the book that summoned the mouthy demon that would do translations for you. Got kind of an old school vibe from that.

Ok Totally forgot to mention another fav- the Bulwark Crystal, it had some pizazz and I totally plan on using it.

Marathon Voter Season 6

I do believe I saw the pillars dexter after the cull.

Star Voter Season 6

Congrats to all. Some really cool stuff came up this year. Best of luck with the coming rounds.

I know Friday is when critiquing starts, but I'm dying to know if my item made the cull, that's all. Does anybody remember seeing the Circlet of Precognition POST-cull?

Marathon Voter Season 6

I believe I saw that one post-cull as well. Sacrifice a spell to get a bonus to init?

Cheapy, if you were answering me, the Circlet of Precognition let you "see" 3 rounds into the future, a la Nicholas Cage's film Next, although the comparison didn't come to me until AFTER I submitted.

I must be thinking of a different item.

Hmmm, there was an item that let you mold or write in rock, was it the Butterstone Stylus, or close to that? Interesting concept.

That is correct Zahir.

Since we're only talking about stuff that was awesome, I absolutely loved the linarian's bane, just a perfect idea for a one-shot item! Also super-cool was the meridian needle and the jade bell of the discordant soul as awesome monk-love items (especially the latter, which provides a recharge mechanic they desperately need), and also the tesseract dust, which was fun but probably too sciencey.

Sorry, one more – props to whoever made the belt of the shielding portal. SO cool and so well done!

A little disappointed that my flask of sudden sanctuary didn't make an impact, but there's always next year! :)

Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7

Is that the one that conjured up a cathedral complete with (insert appropriately-aligned outsider here) priest? I LOVED that thing. I just couldnt remember the name.

Have to admit I saw a LOT of class-specific items like the monk and gunslinger stuff that would probably be awesome for those classes... but pretty much useless for anyone else, and I admit to a strong bias in favor of items everyone can use (to varying levels of utility) over an item that does everything for one subset of characters and nothing or near-nothing for all the rest.

Other thread reminded me of one more: Lonely Man's Instant Party. The name was incredibly amusing and the mechanics were interesting. Voted for it quite a few times.

Yes! I really loved the lonely man's instant party! It was such a ludicrous premise, but executed so flawlessly! I loved especially the little touches, like the party guests exploding into confetti :D

And yes, that's the one! Thank you so much, you made my night!

Other items off my awesome-list:

The spell knot was almost literally a spell-in-a-can, but it still made my list because of the sheer range of cool stuff you could do with it; a totally new spell delivery vehicle. The light shelf was absolutely useless in-game, but was such an amazingly cool idea, that's totally the sort of thing someone in the game world would actually build! The flute of the macaw gets awesome points for summoning a macaw the size of a pteranodon, and the cloud of gray was a really innovative idea, even if I cringed every time I saw that spelling of grey! :P

I remember that item... it was basically the text of the unseen crew spell, which means it was a spell-in-a-can.

The trick is to not list the spell-in-a-can spell you're duplicating in the requirements and hope that the majority of people don't recognize the effect.

Clark,

In response to your Olympic example I would like to add my opinion. I have absolutely no problem losing when I know that I have been bettered, and those that have won actually do deserve it(I believe my item, Fiddle of the Dance, was culled). This is simply a part of life regardless of whatever competition we enter. It actually helps to see what has been achieved by those who did win, and then do what is needed to improve for the next challenge. However some of the items that are listed on the 32 I disagree with. For myself I do not see them as having that mojo that has been thrown about so loosely. That is ok, as it is simply my opinion, and I give kudos to those who did won, as they did clearly impress.

With this being said I will say that we are all winners. Our prize is simply the experience of the competition. The overreaching goal is to present a well polished story that leaves the players with a sense of awe. I look forward to seeing the end product of this competition, and I will leave it at that.

That's one reason I used gymnastics as an example. There is a subjective element to the judging, just like there is here. We don't pretend that there is some absolute criteria. So you are free to have your opinions and that is good. That's also another reason why the judges matter. For many years, I was the guy who would be publishing 3P freelancer work. Sean obviously does his thing for Paizo. Wolfgang is the man, too. So while subjective, we have a perspective that is helpful and experienced--something community members don't necessarily have.

I didn't keep good records of what I saw while voting (or any records for that matter), but the one I liked a lot that I haven't seen mentioned was the sealing wax one that let you spray hot wax on swarms amongst other things, sealing them in place.

Bob, I only ever saw the pillars dexter once, early in the voting, but it was enough to put it on my top 32 list and it never got bumped. It also made me start jotting down notes for what a related item called the pillars sinister might be capable of.
