In future contests could submitters see their item statistics during the voting process?

Assistant Software Developer , Star Voter Season 7

I cleaned up some posts.

Silver Crusade Star Voter Season 6

I think showing the voting rankings after the top 32 are announced would be a bad idea. It's not just a matter of knowing that you, as a Round 2 contestant, may only have been ranked 60th in voting. I would not want to see the backlash from the person who was 2nd in voting but got passed over by the judges. There could be a lot of sour grapes about the contest relating to entrants who received high vote tallies but were not selected by the judges to advance.

Exactly. There's two relevant ranks:

1. You made the top 32.
2. You didn't.

Nothing else is relevant to the contest :)

In your opinion - others may be interested in how their item fared even though it did not get into the 32 items selected by the judges.

No, it's actually pretty much spot on. The contest has an either or end result. Either you made the top 32 or you didn't. Anything else really has no relevance.

Look at it this way. Since this contest is, in essence, a job interview, would you contact a company for which you interviewed but was not hired to find out where on the list of applicants you were? I suspect (and sincerely hope) the answer would be no, as it would not do anything to further your chances of getting a job.

For those who did not make the top 32, the best bet, and most productive, is to post their items in the "Please Critique My Item" thread. Knowing where you ranked in the midst of every other item does nothing to improve your skills, but posting in that thread should, if you take the advice to heart.

The message I'm receiving here is that Paizo's customers are too immature, childlike, unstable or not possessed of the requisite critical faculties to deal with competition. Have I misunderstood?

I think it's a bit more complicated than that, Raphael.

As some of our peers here have stated, one factor is that, while many of those competing in RPGSS have the maturity to take criticism, that can not be said for all of them, as has been made plain in previous years of the contest.

Another factor, is that while many people would be interested in seeing where they stood out in the rankings, many other people would not like to have that information, for whatever reason, and those wishes should be respected as well. There is a lot of stress that goes into competing, and there's certainly no reason to add another level of it for those who do not want it.

Finally, with the judges only releasing the Top 32, it allows us all to focus on celebrating the winners of the competition, and does not allow for part of the community (no matter how few they may be) to dwell on those who were the lowest ranking competitors. I have a feeling, that even done under the best intentions this would lead to arguments or other unsavory behaviour that is unfitting of this community, and it would detract from what makes this competition so cool and fun to participate in.

'Nuff said.
