Could it happen that you are in the voting booth and behold two items appear and one is very familiar. One you know very well because you submitted it. You try to stay objective , you scan your submisssion and giggle a little at what you think is a very clever creation. Before you auto-vote "keep", "awesome", "fabulous" or whatever the appropriate thumbs up button will be, you read the opposing submission.

You start out with a snork, then a sneer, then ........ OMG ......... This item is freaking great. Yours pales in comparison.

What do you do?

First off ..... Will that even be possible?

I don't think the tech team plans to cross-reference your name with the submissions list to prevent you from voting on your own item.

If you're running for a political office, it's perfectly legal and ethical to vote for yourself, so I don't see a problem in voting for your item if it pops up.

We will not prevent you from voting on your own item. If your item comes up, vote your conscience!

However, if there is a comment facility and it's your own item...

DON'T COMMENT

That, I still believe, is auto DQ when discovered.

That's right! Vote for your item! That other contestant shouldn't have been coming up with something better than your idea anyway! You'll vote for your item, and that will knock him out of the running and they will rue the day they ever thought they could outsmart you! RUE, I say!

.....

Wait, what? You mean they did the exact same thing and voted for their own submission too?

.....

Spoiler:
Balls!

I once met a guy who told me he ran for class president in middle school. At the time, he didn't realize he was allowed to vote for himself, so he voted for one of the other candidates. He lost by one vote.

My dilemma is coming across an item that is similar to mine. I have not seen my item yet but I am tempted to vote it down to reduce the chance it will be compared to mine. Of course I naturally believe that my item is better so I should not need any "strategy" to give me the edge, but the temptation is still there.

BTW I voted for the similar item because it was much better than the one next to it. I would rather lose to a *cough* better version of my item than allow a truly inferior item to be voted ahead of it.

Does that make sense?

Star Voter Season 6

If the other item is better you could always use the infamous "Both items are equally good/bad" and let someone else decide.

I think in the long run, one vote won't matter.

Lantern Lodge Dedicated Voter Season 6

There are a lot more votes taking place here, but one vote has mattered in some of the Kobold Press patronage projects and IIRC, I believe a certain Paizo freelancer even lost out once because of failing to vote for his own submission. The combo of this approach to voting plus judges makes that exact scenario unlikely here, but you never know.

Personally I'm rarther self-deprecating kind of person so I'd vote for the other item if I felt it really was better than mine.

Star Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 9

One of my friends who helped me look for issues in my entry just showed me an item that was eerily similar to mine. I know design paralells happen, it's just weird when it happens to you.

And now, the odds are someone's going to see both side-by-side at one point and say "wow, what an eerie coincidence".

I'm excited to find my item - simply because I want to see what I get paired against!

Look at last year's monster competition where my sidhe noble went up against Will Cooper's sidhe lord. Never would have thought that would happen (and the only reason I didn't use lord in the name was because I wanted something that was gender neutral). Just random parallel design.

Heck, poor Tom's module idea ended up being too close to something Paizo was planning, meaning much of it would have had to be changed and possibly costing him the top spot.

Dedicated Voter Season 6

I haven't seen my item yet, so it's a moot point thus far, but I have seen a couple of items I would vote for over my own, were in in that spot. I still think I designed a really good item, but I've been fortunate enough to see a few items I'm reaaaaaaaaally hoping make it to the top 32.

One thing I will say is that I am pleased that I haven't run into anything that seems to be different version of my exact item. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, and it is entirely possible there's another one floating around in the pool somewhere. I'm not really sure what I'd do if someone else appeared to do the same exact thing as me. ...Especially if their version was (gods forbid) better. <<;
