[LPJ Design] What sounds better as a class name - Genegineer or Fleshweaver?

Product Discussion

So we are working on a alternate class for our Machinesmith class and right now we are stuck on names for this class. We are down to these two and we want to hear what Pathfinder fans like better: Genegineer or Fleshweaver? Please let us know your opinions. Thanks!

What do they do? The machinesmith, but for living things?

Is it Science fiction? Then Genegineer, although I have heard this term before, so not sure if a copyright is attached

Fantasy...Fleshweaver.

If the class is magical a Fleshweaver sounds good but if its more alchemical or science based a Genegineer sounds good, maybe make it a archetype?

That is the basic concept, but of course there will have some very unique abilities specialized just for this class.

We talked it over for a LONG time and decided due to the uniqueness of this class, alternative class was the best choice.

At first I thought Paizo had used Fleshweaver but when I looked it up it turned out to be Fleshwarper. It was in the Second Darkness AP.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Fleshweaver.

With Genegineer, you're just asking for a whole heap of pronunciation troubles. It also vaguely sounds like the class is based around having red hair.

Genegineer rings as a very neutral, scientific-oriented class from a sci-fi setting.

Fleshweaver sounds (to me) evil (or just sinful, ymmv) and magic-based.

Fleshweaver. Genegineer kinda sounds like a denim manufacturer.

Turning people into denim for fun and profit. :)
I like Fleshweaver as well.

what they said.

How about Gene Genie? :)

Genetailor?

I lean towards "Fleshweaver" seems to invoke more of a fantasy feel. Genegineer seems to be more steampunky.

The term genegineer sounds awkward to say out loud.

Shadow Lodge

Cthulhudrew... I see what you did there...

Liberty's Edge

Fleshweaver evokes art and mastery.

Genegineer evokes manufacture and tinkering.

Depends on the feeling you want to give the class.

I prefer Fleshweaver.

Fleshweaver. Genegineer just sounds silly.

Now if it was "Bio-engineer" or "Genewarper" or something along those lines it'd be good, especially for a Sci Fi campaign.

"Gengineer" would sound cool, but neither Genegineer or Gengineer LOOK right on paper... Reads too much like Ginger.. You don't want your class subconsciously reading like a racial epithet, regardless of how stupid said epithet is.

Fleshweaver is sufficiently cool. Seriously... the other one my only clash with a small subset of the population, but it's better to avoid such things.

I have been thinking Fleshreaper as another choice.

Fleshreaper works too. I just think "gene" is too modern a word, if the flavor is in fact more classic fantasy.

I was thinking more that the implied "engineer" part was too modern. Certainly the term "genetic engineer" is too modern.

Riffing on other folks suggestions:

Fleshwarper
Genereaper
Skinchanger
Geneweaver
Anatomechanic

Why would "engineer" be too modern? Knowledge(engineering) is right on the pathfinder skills list. Siege engineers are commonplace.

Anatomechanic has a good ring to it...

I gotta agree with this one the most, on top of the fact that Genegineer is just really funky to try and say.

Geneweaver? I like that. Sounds very magical-bio-mediciney.

Dark Archive

Fleshweaver, definitely.

Skinchanger is also cool, but more appropriate for a shapeshifter.

Bloodwarper or whatever could fit the old 'in the blood' or 'bloodline' concept, but might sound like it's affecting physical blood and not the metaphorical blooded / bloodline traits.

If you're not using the modern defintion: Where's the engine in genetic engineering?

Sovereign Court

Genegineer sounds like a guy in a lab coat, tinkering with creatures, adding traits here, altering traits there. When making a new creature, he uses cloning vats or something; it has to grow.

Fleshweaver sounds like a guy who creates creatures by weaving together interesting bits, but has a hard time altering anything once it's actually made. It also sounds much more magical, less science-y.

So it really depends on what you want the class to be. Genegineers might even be a Fleshweaver archetype, or vice versa.

Sovereign Court

I would vote for *not* Genegineer, since that is a character/title from the Marvel Universe ;-)

That, and I think that Fleshweaver sounds better :-)

Genegineers are a group in Mage: the Ascension
