Best Hunter spells

Advice

Hi! I'm playing a 5th level Cavalier and I'm getting ready to take 4 levels of Hunter (want that Pack Flanking!). I'm curious as to what spells you think my Cav/Hunter should memorize. Thanks!

They're spontaneous casters, no memorisation.

There's lots of mobility spells like cheetah's sprint, feather step, monkey fish, sea steed etc.

Combat buffs like acid maw, lead blades, barkskin, +4 enhancement to a stat, maybe hunter's howl exist.

Carry companion or harmless form can hide your mount & make it portable.

There's 101 weird and wonderful spells too.

I know they're spontaneous, but they can only cast the spells they know, right? That's why I wrote "memorize".

"Memorize" is the old term for what prepared casters do. As opposed to spontaneous casters.

Anyway, what sort of wisdom do you have - the bare minimum to cast spells, full caster level, or what? Hunter's howl is a useful combat buff with maxed out wisdom but pointless with minimal. Do you like the idea of weird spells with little combat use?

14 Wisdom. Sorry, I wasn't trying to be rude or anything.

With only being able to use a very limited number of spells, I want to make sure they're the most useful ones.

Well memorize is more what wizards do. Read It, learn it for a cast and forget it. Better to just say "know"

But I'm playing a hunter now, I found compel hostility, delay poison and monkey fish are great at level 1. 2 of those I cast on the pet with share spells and get it to tank and climb up places it can't normally reach. I took Erastils deadeye lore as he's my god.

My level 2 is a little more prosaic with barkskin. I took carry animal for my wife's pet as she can't cast it.

Only regret is not being able to grab a lot of ranger spells at low level. Being able to cast delay poison at level 1, before any other class in the game? Amazing. Hunters true strength

I'm not certain on how that would work with the Cavalier's mount. It specifically says that you don't get the share spells ability. Delay poison sounds like a good one, though. Carry companion would be really good, too. Unfortunately, I don't have that book.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I would say lead blades for a cavalier is likely the best option. Extra damage on a charge.

There is sense vitals which would grant another bit of damage but...
As you aren't leveling in hunter much skip get it.

Carry companion or monkey fish are pretty incredible for helping your pet.

Past that, what's your pet?

A horse, of course, of course. hee hee.

Lead blades is very nice. Carry companion is second level, and I won't be getting any of those anyway. Regardless, I don't have that book.

If you need the book I guess this is for PFS? What books do you have?

Hunters do get share spells though. Unless you've traded it out via an animal companion archetype.

The lower than normal level ranger spells aren't such a big deal at character level 6. I might pick a mobility spell and a combat buff first. Monkey fish is the most multipurpose mobility spell (though I have heard PFS uses difficult terrain often enough feather step might work), lead blades might be useful on a lance charge., magic fang is at least in the core rulebook.

No, not PFS. Just not allowed to use something we don't have a book for.

Yeah, I know Hunters can share spells, but Cavaliers can't. I'm not sure how that works when two classes contradict each other.

Just looking at the ACG again, and it looks like I only will need three levels of Hunter to get that Pack Flanking deal. Very tempting to take another one, just to get Barkskin though.

You don't think it's worth it to take CLW?

You can share spells as a level 1 hunter. And if you take 4 levels you'll get level 2 spells.

I think just buy a wand since as you CAN cast cute light wounds you can use a wand even if you don't know the spell yourself

When you get your 4th level of Hunter, you will be able to cast 2nd level spells, although for that particular spell it's moot, if your GM uses the PFS rule about what books you need.

The way I read the Cavalier class description of Mount, it says "A cavalier’s mount does not gain the share spells special ability", but it doesn't say "A cavalier’s mount cannot ever gain the share spells special ability, even from another class" -- the latter would be analogous to the Bladebound Magus restriction against getting a Familiar, whereas the former just means that Cavalier's Mounts do not get this ability from your being a Cavalier. This does make a difference in the case that you try to use an Animal Companion/Mount archetype that trades out Share Spells, so I can see that some GM might balk at your taking such an archetype if your Mount is partly dependent upon Cavalier levels and partly dependent upon Hunter levels.

Edit: Ninja'd.

As for Cure Light Wounds, it isn't the most efficient thing you can do with your spells, but it is good to have in an emergency in case something bad happens to your Wand of Cure Light Wounds and you need to get somebody back up and ambulatory.

Yeah, I'm kinda confused on that. I'll have to get a ruling.

And, like I said, I don't NEED to take four levels of Hunter, since I was basically just taking it to get Pack Flanking. Taking one more to get access to Barkskin is very enticing...

Very gard choice at lvl 2...
Barkskin...carry companion..reduce aninal...spider climb.

Can't use Carry companion, but Reduce animal could come in handy. Make the horse a Medium creature.

Mostly I reccomend monkey fish. Invaluable.

Monkey fish doesn't work if you're wearing medium or heavy armor. Cavalier, remember.
