For those who, like me, didn't ever think of this: If you don't have Local Leader to create provisioners, simply load up a Settler with as much junk as they can carry that you want at a new location and Move them to it. Once they get there, they'll stay there, and when you get there you can trade with them and take it all back and dump it in your Workshop.
Slow, yes, but it works and doesn't require a middling investment in CHA!

Anyone have any insight as to how the change in difficulty works across save files on the PS4? I loaded up my 66th level character to play Far Harbor only to find out that he was carrying 3k in encumbrance. At first, I thought I'd overloaded him to move everything from one base to another (he has the perk that let's you fast travel when encumbered), but it turns out the difficulty mode was still stuck in Survival from my last play session with a different character. I turned off Survival for that character, but now I wonder if the other character will be permanently exiled from Survival mode.

If it works like XBox, then you should have 2 saves for that character: one normal and one [Survival]. It is created at that point where you opened their save while also in Survival on another. Switching the [Survival] one back to Very Hard or lower, yes, does mean that file can't go back into Survival. But the other save in normal can be switched, so you should be fine.

Okay having played through more, I see what you're saying. You find them in ruins of campsites and such.
I have a vague recollection--which means I could entirely be making this up and should be taken with a large grain of salt--from the last time I went to Mt. Desert Island (the setting for the DLC) that some of the older, more rustic campsites were equipped with outhouses (or buildings that used to be outhouses but were later repurposed).
Old farms and other sufficiently old buildings--of which there are many in Maine--sometimes also still have outhouses (the house I grew up in [not in Maine]) had an outhouse). Now, realistically being largely wooden structures that need a fair bit of maintenance to remain standing, they shouldn't have survived the apocalypse, but the same goes for a lot of stuff in the Fallout landscape, so.
But probably the real reason is to feature an item you can now build in settlements -- for which I am very grateful, as I am one of those weirdoes who has to build bathrooms for their settlers. Look, people need to have a place to pee!
There's not a LOT of new settlement stuff in FH but what is there I really like. The barn building set (which includes the outhouses) is really great. The traps are cool too, as are the nautical decorations.
On another note, I am really impressed on the details on the landscape in this game. I know this is going to sound bizarre if you haven't been there, but the rocks really look like Maine coast rocks. I'm sure a resident would find issue, but as an occasional visitor, the place really does look and feel to me like I'm wandering around a postapocalyptic Mt. Desert Island--even moreso than Boston or Washington, DC, two places I've also been to frequently. Mind, it's reasonably a much smaller relatively speaking area with a lot less urban detail, but still.
The lag for some reason is better today and I have no idea why. Stealth patch? Luck? idk.

I've never been to Maine, or many places out east, but outhousesare quote common in the West. They are usually abundant in areas that are hard to get to and maintain. I can't think of a single national park I've been to that does not have one. Granted they look way different than the stereotypical ones in fh.

Having already finished the game with my 1st character before the mechanist came out, what triggers that DLC?
Also, yeah. I didn't explain myself well. My main character build was a ballistics pistollero build. For this one I was going for a laser-pistol build, but I need to either find a better gun or improve the base. I haven't done the former, and can't do the latter because finding stuff that contains nuclear material is hard in the starting area. I got 2 of it from the atomic board game that's down the river from sanctuary but that's it.
I think I'll give Otherwhere's advice a try and do the Quest with Danse. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Managed to clear out the Super Duper Mart for the folks at Tenpines Bluff. It took me three tries. I didn't manage to get any legendary items on my successful run despite there being some on my first two tries. Shame really, I would have rather liked that cryo pipe pistol.
Just outside the main entrance, you'll find 4 canisters of Mr.Handy Fuel which is great if you're short on oil. After entering through the main entrance you'll notice a Protectron in its docking unit. Go straight ahead through the doorway and hang a left into an office where you'll find the terminal to unlock the Protectron. The terminal also unlocks a safe just opposite the terminal.
I'm not sure how the Protectron will react in it's default setting but I can say that its law enforcement setting is non-hostile to the player. It's also pretty tough and the ghouls only managed to kill it on my third try (with heavy casualties). Note that due to the amount of ghouls in the building, it's very likely you'll run into one or more legendaries so be aware of that. Don't be afraid to retreat back to the Protectron if you get overwhelmed.

Fort Sill still uses them out on ranges. I've been told several other Army bases still do but haven't been stationed at those bases.

Yeah, I haven't seen a moon on the door wooden shack one outside of classic cartoons, and I used to visit kin in the mountains of West Virginia.

I placed an outhouse in Starlight Drive-in but oddly, I can either sit on the seat or close the door, not both. I've tried placing it in different positions but no dice. Is anyone else having this issue? It's not a big deal, it just seems odd to me that characters apparently can't fit in the outhouse when they use the seat.

In any case, they're quite cheap and every vendor I've met has had them in stock. I'm sure it's relatively easy to keep a steady supply even without Chemist.

That's odd. It's definitely nothing to do with my Luck stat because I left it at one. I regularly find them in first aid containers. Maybe it is just the luck of the draw.

I think it is just luck (vs Luck), as I found 3 of them when I first got to Sanctuary, but have found only 1 or 2 since and my character is at lvl 15 now.
They're expensive to purchase.
Dr's are a great option when you can locate one because they cure you with no side effects, especially when you're irradiated.

Liking Far Harbor more and more as I go into it. The characters are interesting -- and it's definitely worth taking Nick along with you, BTW. The environment is nicely creepy.
Haven't done much with the new companion, and he just seems to be a walking Salty Ol' Yankee stereotype--though a fun one at that.
They seem to have taken into account some criticisms and it seems like dealing with the different factions can be more nuanced... I'm hoping for some diplomatic options opening up as I play through. Although of course it's plain the option to just blow everything up is there as well.
Monsters are suitably tough, and I like the new creatures. My only
"complaint" is the presence of super mutants... they are wholly unnecessary and there should be no reason for them to be there--the Trappers and the various monsters are more than enough. I know Bethesda is just in love with super mutants and wants to put them everywhere but FFS.
The murder mystery plot is entertaining.

All the quests, did some morally questionably things to keep everyone alive and willing to work with each other. saved civilization as they know it, and grabbed some cool new equipment. By any chance is there a recipe for hot butter to go with your unexpected bounty of crab meat? ;)

Brahmin SHOULD produce brahmin milk, which you should then be able to craft butter and other things with (chowder!).
Also, as there are radchickens on the Island, and you can find cooking oil, you should be able to get eggs and make mayonnaise to make crab salad. (In other news, DeathQuaker may have also played too much Harvest Moon and Rune Factory in her life.)
I have not found any of the power armors yet (save for a suit of raider armor a trapper was wearing). I am obsessive as ever in getting settlements up and running on the Island... moreso, even, as I want to be able to give these folks more safe places to live... which of course is eating up my time. I spent a ridiculous amount of time last night trying to patch up the walls and roof in the main building at the Lumber Mill (which is generally a fairly awesome spot for a settlement.
For some reason, the "terminal tale" of Beaver Lanes Bowling Alley Broke my heart--they never got to rebuild! And they made me this cool gun! So I built a bowling alley on Longfellow's Island and named it Beaver Lanes II, and hung an American flag in honor of Thomas.

New England Clam Chowder is my favorite soup. Especially with pepper seasoning to kick it up a bit.
One wonders how much of the foodstuffs are an acquired taste to the Sole Survivor. Very little, even the packaged goods (since they're preserved by Fallout's super-effective albeit dangerous-to-ingest/drink background radiation), strikes me as tasting terribly good for a pre-nuke palate.

MMmm - Giant Crab Cakes... (drool) Doh!!
I believe I found the remains of Thomas on the shore close to the MS Azalea. There's a skeleton and a wheelchair on the shore below the cliffside.
I'm really enjoying Fah Hahbah more than the vanilla game! Yes, it's more railroady, but more intricate in the various factions and how their quests interconnect.
I'm doing my "Do-Gooder" run right now, trying to help establish peace between the most factions. I'll do an evil run with another character.
I feel bad about building anything at Longfellow's Cabin. I don't feel right about coming in and completely remaking his lands, and inviting settlers. He's a lone wolf! So I bought him a wolf and want to having it be just the 2 of them.
And why can't we take the MS Azalea as a settlement? It's yuge! (if buggy on the xbone)
DeathQuaker RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8 |
Longfellow gave me access to his workshop of his own free will, he can suffer the consequences of having random people bowling on his property. What I find interesting is you can't build a bar on his Island, which is sad given his predilection for booze.
I did feel bad, sort of, about sending Uncle Ken home, but the Visitor's Center is way too cool not to make good use of as a settlement. I reasoned that while sure, his family lived there a long time, but before the War, my hubby and I went on vacation to Acadia National Park (there is no proof of this in game, this is me making s+%! up), and therefore we were there first and have first stomping rights. Yes, this is very strained, but my character is a thief at heart.
I've mostly finished turning Eden Mill into quite a nice settlement. Needs some final retaining walls and some decorations, but fixed up the old house, putting an infirmary on the front first floor (with decontamination shower and surgery center) and workshop/kitchen in the basement. Bedrooms above, with office on the top floor. Top floor contains windmills for power. Front entrance area contains restaurant and marketplace (armor, weapon, and clothing shop), side/rear contains farm field and brahmin barn. One day I might put up a fighting arena since there's there's an audience stand right there. I forgot to put in the bathrooms and bathhouse but I'll get to that at some point.
I didn't have major issues with the Azalea, but I did get shot at a lot by people I couldn't see (and my perception's quite high).
Two hermit crabs have scared the piss out of me by popping up where I didn't expect them. The first one I took out pretty quickly. The second one I got stuck on the terrain and nearly was killed but just barely managed to survive. Really glad I gave Longfellow a railgun. A third I was asked to take out by Eden Mill settlers -- one of those infamous quests where they say, "Let's fight this monster nearby" and then we trek halfway across the island. That one I could sneak up on, so it didn't startle me, but it was an albino and took awhile to kill.

As a crab-eating Marylander with lobster-eating Yankee relatives, all sympathy for crustaceans being boiled alive has been systematically removed from my being. I'm sure I lose karma for it, but come to think of it, the last time I was actually on Mt. Desert Island and went to a lobster pound, the lady showed me the big MF lobster I was getting, struggling in the tongs she was holding him in, and all I could think of was, "ha ha ha yes! Toss'im in the steamer!"
This may explain why mirelurks chase me relentlessly, come to think of it.

My sympathy for living creatures doesn't stop me from eating them, so I know I'm like most people in that regard. (Was pretty vegan for a short time, but it didn't last because I wasn't eating a really well balanced diet. I do better with some meat.)
re: Mods - Much Ado About Nothing
So far the selection is pretty meager. A lot of the really cool new texture mods and clothing/armor mods will not be coming to console. There are a few I've downloaded, like the Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch to fix known bugs and glitches, and a "Save or Sleep" mod for Survival Mode that was ported from the PC to XBox. A few others I haven't tried yet as the description doesn't really inform you what the mod is supposed to do. But it's new, so who knows?
Hopefully more will be coming, and the "PC vs Console" flame wars can dwindle down or end. I was called the absolutely most offensive things possible by one PC-elitist for saying that both sides are simply trying to improve their gaming experience, and that I understood both sides. That was quite a shock, actually, to be met with such venom when I was expressing something acknowledging the PC-gamer side of things!
I don't get people sometimes.

Where did everybody go?
LOL
Mods have really made a difference with the play-ability of Survival Mode. Just being able to drop a save whenever I want is a HUGE difference.
Adding Ballistic Weave to the General's Outfit is allowing my Minuteman-focused character to progress further.
Being able to swap legendary mods from one piece of armor or weapon to another is fantastic!
I'm still hoping someone will add drinking fountains or a water pump to Diamond City. "We have purified water." Yeah, but only for sale from that kid. What about drinking fountains? Home Plate definitely needs a water source able to be added/crafted.
I haven't tackled the Automatron dlc with either pure (modded) Survival characters yet. They're both lvl 17 now, and I dread running into any Rust Devil spawns &/or their robots. One just got lucky with a Troubleshooting shotgun drop the other day. I haven't pulled it off to throw on another weapon so far, but I love knowing that I can!
My other character got a very well modded Kneecapper 10mm, and that saved his but numerous times when surprised by Deathclaws, Vicious Mongrels, and Legendary Mirelurks!
Have fun! And stay safe out there!

I have been busy with Stellaris and am about to start Hearts of Iron IV soon. I think I am also a little bit tired of the sloppy writing that is Bethesda.
I do have to admit that 4 hasn't held my interest nearly as well as 3 and NV both did. As I've played I came to notice that 4 seems to have a mix of things that I disliked from each, the rough feeling systems from 3, and the forced background and faction based storyline from NV. Also, I didn't think it would bother me, but the voiced protagonist does dampen the replay value, both by making every character sound alike despite very different backstories, and by limiting dialogue options.
Both 3 and NV each had something else that kept me coming back, with 3 it was the setting, seeing DC in ruins and remembering parts of my childhood visit made it feel more interesting, and NV had some DLC that I enjoyed more than the base game. 4 doesn't have those hooks. I have no connection or familiarity with Boston, and the only significant DLC so far barely held me for two days.
For me it's all resting on mods, because that's something I've never been able to do in a modern Fallout game, and I very much enjoy "dress-up" style customization. If the ps4 available mods include plenty of the outfit textures, I'll be back for sure. If not, F4 might become a game I pull out every couple years for a week.
