loads shotgun

I see...

More seriously, I know the wheels fall off the story pretty quickly. Lots of serious real life drama around the show, only the music truly saved it.

Agree to disagree. I know Macross focuses on music, it's just that apart from Plus and some of Frontier, the music throught the series was at best forgettable.

Episode four of Bureaucrat-villainess daddy moved the show from merely entertaining to memorable with the proper introduction of wife and sister and the actual circumstances of daddy. The little bit of daddy in his youth playing choose your own adventures and rerolling until he got the result he wanted really hit the mark.

oh my goodness. I just stumbled across the Live Action movie of the Guycer on Amazon Prime.

More Apocthery Diaries!

I don't understand what sort of mysterious time-warping power of the show. Every episode is supposed to be about twenty minutes long and I could swear that they are under ten.

If you haven't seen Bang Brave Bravern, you need to watch it. It's one cour and it's a lean and mean Top Gun/Independence Day/Gundam mashup.

One of our crew called the twist and I told him that makes too much sense so it can't be true.

So of course he was right.

If I list a few shows I like, could you all potentially recommend me some others? I'm in a bit of a rut for finding new ones!

Absolutely!
I can't promise to have much by the way of recommendations if you like sports or yaoi, though.

I don't, actually! lol I generally avoid those as well as romance heavy ones and isekai. I honestly enjoy more like.... mystery, action, sci-fi, thriller and stories involving yokai? Here's some I really enjoyed:

Link Click
Natsume's Book of Friends
Fullmetal Alchemist (controversial opinion, but I prefer the OG over Brotherhood)
Midnight Occult Civil Servants
Paranoia Agent
Bungo Stray Dogs
Bleach and Bleach 1000 Year Blood War
In/Spectre
Hunter X Hunter
YuYu Hakusho

Got anything like those? I'm watching Great Pretender right now, but it doesn't look very long...

First ones that pop into mind are Mushishi and Monster.

Those both sound really good! I'll watch them and report back! ^_^

maybe Ergo Proxie or Psychopass

I slid off Ergo Proxy, but I hear good things about Psychopass. One of my friends said Ergo Proxy is a little too self-involved with its own storytelling as it goes on.

Seconding Mushishi. It's very good.

Have you tried Boogiepop Phantom? It's a spin-off of the main Boogiepop story, though interestingly Phantom came out many years before the main story got an anime adaptation. It works just as well if you are unfamiliar with the main story. If you like Paranoia Agent, you will probably like BP.

I will always suggest Lupin III. There's a ton of stuff to get through, of varying quality. You can start with a movie like Blood seal: eternal mermaid or the TV series Part IV or V. The most famous piece of "Castle of Cagliostro" is a good movie but a bad Lupin story. Or you could do like my fiancee and dive into the deep end with "A woman called Mine Fujiko".

I watched Psychopass and REALLY LOVED IT!!

Also, I started Mushishi over the weekend, and holy CRAP! I love it too lol. Incredible. I'm going to try all these recommendations because they're spot on.

removes Maya from Christmas Card List

More seriously, please watch Hell Girl/Jigoku Shoujo. Please. I need someone else to talk to about it.

There's also YAMISHIBAI. Again. Please. Watch. Please.

Also there's Silent Mobius(watch one of the better-translated ovas, then the series).

There's also another anime that I cannot find that is retro and amazing that is Hanmei...yo!...something. But that is also quite good AND it's on YouTube. I'll see if I can find it.

This made me genuinely laugh!!! I knew it was controversial when I put it out there, but I figured it would be more worthwhile to just rip of the band aid ^_^ I appreciate banter, and you asked so kindly, so I will add them to my list and report back! Keep in mind everyone, I can only watch a few episodes a day in my free time, so it might take me a while, but I'm now on episode 15 of Mushishi, so I swear I am actually doing this and not just spouting words!

We're doing a rewatch of FMA, starting with the original and then Brotherhood, the dub is rough in places but the storytelling and animation are just as good as I remember. It will be good to have the comparison when we get Brotherhood started and can see the differences.

I should go back to Hell Girl sometime as well.

Please tell me what you think because I stand by my opinion of preferring the OG.

Haibane Renmei/Charcoal Feather Association? The young angels?

Yet another good one.

Haibane Renmei is art and I will hear nothing less.

Maya Coleman wrote:

I think Brotherhood is the better adaptation, but I look forward to seeing how the initial episodes compare. I believe OG breathes better, but I want to see if you could start with OG and convert over to after the initial arcs without too much jank.

My favor is with the OG in part because of this! It breathes better, and I like the flow better. I also kind of enjoy that it's a little grimy. Brotherhood feels... visually sterilized in a lot of ways to me? I found the OG to be more introspective, which I tend to prefer. I also think Brotherhood had a lot more of the like... typical comedic tropes you find in anime, and I dislike those usually. I did think it was a great show, definitely! I think just the presentation of the story in the OG was more to my personal taste?

the Christmas cards, they are burning

More seriously, see if you can watch Yamishibai as well. I think it's on crunchyroll. Thr 3rd season is my personal favorite.

No...it's something else. Retro.

Dammit. This is gonna drive me nuts.

Might be hard to find but

Crest of the Stars is a good older style Space Opera
and if you want some good fantasy Guin Saga and Moribito: Guardian of the spirit are two of my favourites.

oh and if you have an urge for a bit of life lessons comedy with a side of yakuza, try The Gokusen

also give you 50/50 odds on enjoying Outlaw Star

This 50/50 feels like a challenge... (one I accept).

I enjoyed Outlaw Star and its spin-off Angel Links.

Crest/Banner of the Stars was OK, I guess.

based on a late 80s early 90s serious supernatural manga with a pair of girls who use their magical powers to undertake exorcisms. There may have been an old school bishonen as a secondary character. It was on YouTube for a long time.

Doesn't ring a bell, I'm afraid.
But 80s anime with female leads makes me think of Dirty Pair, which is a lot of fun.

I'm nearing the end of Mushishi, and I'm getting emotional. ㅠㅠ

"Red Ranger in another world" just added a new bit of fun.
Following up on rumours of Elves with a mysterious magic our heroes are confronted by....an Egyptian Themed Kamen Rider. a power inherited from a previous visitor from another world.

I'm enjoying that show way more than I expected.

Finished Mushishi. So glad you all recommended that one for me. I was indeed emotional and tears were shed. askjdlfa I have started Monster, and it's already so intriguing!!!

First Episode of Anne Sherley did a nice job of capturing the characters. The style of it looks very traditional but I am curious to see how people who don't know the story react to it.

It's been years since I read those books (technically, had them read to me) so I should probably give it a shot.

I have finished SEVERAL shows since I last asked for advice, and I'll list them here:

Mushishi
Monster
Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill
Ace Attorney
Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective
Great Pretender
Pluto
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
Hell's Paradise

All enjoyed ^^

If you have any love of super sentai, watch the Red Ranger Isekai. I watched a YT clip about Kamen Rider transformation sounds and it made the later episodes even better in retrospect.

Edit: Missed Greylurker mentioning it, consider this full approval.

Pluto got me.

It really really got me.

So good.

Pluto was a good show but I was a bit annoyed at the utter wrongness of the bit supposedly set in Norway. Not that we don't have some landscape like that, but not in the area depicted in the show. The castle also looked far more German than anything we have here.

It was supposed to be after a massive war, nothing looks the same
