My hero academia popped up on hulu. I'd seen it on tv tropes and I'm really enjoying the series.
The protagonist has immense power, but its not like, more immense power than the rest of the kids have (yet)
Its about the kids but they're not afraid to let the adult heroes be awesome heroes: adults are useless is COMPLETELY averted , it varies from the kids are also fighting to the kids are viewpoint characters for the awesome fighting.
Its not entirely shown on camera, but the society has a reasonable response to the emergence of superpowers: most work as police/with police/ rescue and they're actually trained how to do that without, you know, wrecking more of downtown than you have to.
An they avert the "you must attack attack attack!" no matter what. The emergency response AND the school emphasize sizing up your opponent, determining if they're in your powerlevel/skillset and if they're not, GTFO, get somoene who is, and or/try to rescue civilians. Don't get kiled for nothing (and to a surprising extent, the kids GET THE MESSAGE)

yeah My Hero is one of the top series these days for good reason. Has a lot of fantastic characters and the setting is fairly well developed. The character growth of the Main character and his Rival is good too. Honestly seeing Bakugou grow over the series has been a real treat, in another series he would probably have turned villain but here he stays razor focused on being the Top Hero.
Plus with such a big cast there is a lot of really cute shipping material

Just finished watching the first episode of Bleach: The Thousand Year Blood War on Hulu... and all I can say is DAMN!
The ten year wait was worth it (I'm an anime-only fan). The animation was crisp and clean, the soundtrack was on point, and the lack of censorship when it comes to the violence marks that we're truly entering a darker season than the previous ones.
Looking forward to what's coming.

New season and lots of new shows
and damn this is a packed season.
Lots of good returning shows; SpyxFamily, Hero academy, Iruma-kun, and Bleach after a decade hiatus.
and a lot of interesting new stuff
I'm the villainess so I'm taming the last boss: Surprisingly entertaining, largely driven by the charisma of the main character
Akiba Maid War WTH?! Best description I've seen for this is "What if Quentin Tarantino did a Maid Cafe anime"
Reincarnated as a Sword Enjoying this quite a lot, more than I thought I would. Finding myself very invested in Fran's growth as a hero.
Eminence in Shadow: 1st episode was a bit weird, 2nd one was better, neat twist on the standard isekai and some cool action
and of course
Chainsaw man The early episode might leave a lot of folks wondering "Why the Hype?". As someone who did read the manga the hype is largely driven by the 2nd half. First half is still a lot of fun but the 2nd half gets Crazy.
Lots of other shows but so far these are the ones that made an impression on me.

Haven't gotten around to trying everything I will this seas but so far:
More Uzaki-chan, Spy Family and Peter Grill (which I'm sure Freehold will appreciate).
The first pisode of Chainsaw Man was not particularly engaging. I will assume others are correct in that it gets better.
The Little Lies We All Tell is a slightly amusing comedy about girls with weird secrets. It may pick up or it may be the same four jokes over and over. Not that I haven't enjoyed plenty of comedies that use the same joke over and over. I'll probably finish it.

I've been enjoying Chainsaw Man. I especially love that each episode has a different outro and song (my personal favorite so far being HAWATARI NIOKU CENTI [2-hundred-million-centimeter-long blades] (TV edit) by MAXIMUM THE HORMONE. Would definitely love to hear the full version of this song. Also gets extra points for being used as a proper battle theme in episode 7.
Bleach: The Thousand Year Blood War has gotten better and better with each episode, peaking (or so we thought) with last week's reveal of the Head Captain's bankai. Then this week's episode happened. Though not perfect, this arc has exceeded all of my expectations so far.

Managed to catch up to the current season of Boku no Hero Academia.
Also started watching Trigun Stampede. This is the show that I wanted the original series to be like. More serious and darker in tone, especially where the character of Millions Knives is concerned (because he is legitimately scary in this new version). My problem with the original series is that they made Vash seem way more heroic than he actually was, and I didn't like that at all.
Vash is still no one to model their behavior on in this new one, but by the end of the third episode of Stampede, he embarks on the journey to become something more than he is currently. At least that's my hope.
Oh... and that opening is a thing of beauty.

We are a few weeks into the new season and I will inflict my impressions of what I have watched so far on you.
Tomo-chan is a girl. I was surprised and delighted to see this getting an adaptation. The story was finished a few years ago. The 4-koma is excellent and I think adaptation has lost a bit, probably because it is very faithful to the manga and scenes and transitions that worked well in the four panel format get a bit watered down in full animation. I'm still enjoying the heck out of it.
Spy classroom. To scratch that Princess Principal itch. A bunch of girls trained to be spies to take on a suicide mission during WWII. Slightly less unrealistic than PP, also less interesting in basically every way so far. It's OK. I'll probably finish it if I don't forget about it along the way.
Buddy daddies. The lastest installment in the genre I call "hurry up and procreate, Japan!" This time it's a possibly gay male couple taking care of a kid. It's no Spy Family. The second and third episodes were a bit better than the first, so maybe I'll continue to watch it. The kid, Miri, is certainly no threat to the Holy Quartet of anime kids in terms of adorableness.
My life as Inukai-san's dog. Some guy gets transformed into a dog and picked up by a hot chick. I don't have a dog myself but I'm pretty sure that's not how you bathe one. Pass. I'll rewatch Interspecies Reviewers or Tsugumomo if I need ecchi.
Ayakashi triangle. Genderswap, evil spirits, exorcists. Meh. I might watch another episode if I want a break from MSG.
Giant Beasts of Ars I watched one episode and promptly forgot about it until making this list. That should tell me enough about what I feel about it.
Mononogatari. Yadda yadda yadda, shounen protag doesn't like Group A but now has to work alongside them. Hunting awakened items. I'll stick with Tsugumomo.
Big brother is done for Mad scientist little sister turns neet borther into cute girl. Eh. I'll try episode two if I remember to do so. Doubt I'll finish it.
Nagatoro and InSpectres get a second season, much to my delight. So far as fun as the previous seasons.

Kaina of the Great Snow Sea almost slipped past me, which would have been a damn shame. The characters and plot, at least 3 episodes in, are nothing particularly good or bad, but the world on display is fascinating. The lack of same-face on the characters had me puzzled at first but the gear design looked very familiar, and sure enough it was designed and written by Tsutuomu Nihei, writer of Blame! and Knights of Sidonia. Very excited to see where this one goes. He might break his own rule and tie it explicitly to another of his works (most likely the unfairly axed Aposimz).

In addition to watching Trigun Stampede, I've taken up watching The Eminence in Shadow. In doing so, I became aware of a term that I hadn't really heard of before:
chuuni (spelled with this kanji 厨ニ)
After some research, I discovered that it's a shortened form of the word chuunibyou (spelled with this kanji 中二病), or "middle-school second-year syndrome," which refers to when someone acts and talks like they live in a fantasy game, in the manga world, with magic, evil organizations, and so on.
Why is all of that important? Because the MC of The Eminence in Shadow believes he is experiencing this phenomenon rather than believing he's been isekaied to another world (thanks to that Black Air Force menace, Truck-kun), and it informs his every interaction in the series once he arrives.
Sure, it's yet another isekai where the MC is overpowered compared to everyone else, but I'm not watching because of that. No, I'm watching it to see just how long he can keep convincing himself that he's something that he isn't, and what he does when the reality of his situation truly sets in on him.
If, of course, that ever happens...

Episode 8 of Trigun: Stampede begins delving into Vash's backstory. This was something that I wanted to see very much, at least this interpretation of it. I'm enjoying it so far, but next week's episode (which continues what was started in this one) will be very crucial, as I'm curious to see if I can understand what drives both Knives and Vash.

More Konosuba, at least. Nothing else on the list piqued my interest at this point.
Other stuff that's coming that I'm actually looking forward to: "The Legendary Hero is Dead". The hero is an idiot, gets himself killed and a total perv man of culture takes his place. Lots of fan service and humor.
"Ancient Magus' Bride" season 2. Hell yeah!
Another Tenchi Muyo GXP story. Seina now has two full harems in his harem. I suspect it will fill in Seina's story between GXP and Ryo-ohki pt. 4. I also seem to recall there are some light novels detailng this stuff.

I'm very much looking forward to Ancient Magus' Bride season 2 myself. Definitely can't wait for that to start.
Think I finally figured out what the deal is with Trigun: Stampede. Can't believe that I missed it, but after re-watching episode 6, I think I know where this season is headed.
In episode 6 (and continuing into episode 7), Vash and Wolfwood take a ride on a sand-steamer, but are attacked by Livio the Double-Fang, along with Legato Bluesummers, Zazie the Beast, and the Bad Lads Gang (no Brilliant Dynamites Neon, however). I had never seen Livio before, so I was too focused on him to be paying attention to the sand-steamer's destination: the city of July.
If I'm correct, then everything in this series is taking place before the July City Incident. If true, then this means we may actually get to see it animated for the first time. In fact, I think that the season will end after that happens, and will probably launch into a timeskip that could take place in a season two very similar to the one that happens in the manga, Trigun Maximum (I only know this because I have a friend who has read the manga, and who also informed me of Livio's identity as well).
This is merely speculation, and considering that this season is only going to be 12 episodes long, this means that they're two-thirds of the way through, with episode 9 continuing the backstory started in 8. That only leaves 3 more episodes to find out whether my theory is on point or not.
I had all of this buzzing in my head, so I needed to get it out.

That's not dark, that's realistic.

Finished up watching Trigun Stampede, and my speculation ended up being correct. The July Incident occurred in the final episode with a two-year timeskip taking place afterwards and Vash is in hiding, going by the name of Eriks. He has not only the 60 billion $$ bounty, but his hairstyle is very similiar to his original anime version. Meryl is still working for the news service, but is also receiving a newbie by the name of Milly Thompson to mentor.
However, the best part came at the end of the credits:
My understanding is that the final bit at the end will take the series (for which there will be a season two) further into Trigun Maximum manga territory, which it had already been delving into.
Overall, I enjoyed this take on Trigun. It lacked the goofiness of the original anime, yet still remained wholly Trigun. The use of elements from Trigun Maximum lends it a more serious tone that I thought the original anime lacked and instills a better understanding as to why Vash carries such a burden of guilt upon himself. I highly recommend watching it through at least once.

Dead Mount Death Play is a interesting Reverse Isekai. After a climactic battle of good vs. evil someone from a fantasy world is reborn in modern japan. Not a comedy (well maybe a little bit with the after credits), very quickly introduced to murder and underworld corpse collectors. First episode is dark, with a little bit of edgelord to it but not too much.

So, this season...
Ancient Magus Bride is still excellent.
Konosuba - Megumin's story is entertaining. There is a risk that nothing but the chuuni-town and lacking Aqua and Kazuma might be a bit tiring eventually but so far I'm having a blast. Pun intended.
Dead Mount Death Play. Think I'm going to drop it. Assassin girl is one of the types of characters that really grates on my nerves and much though I like the idea of a necromancer protagonist, Polka isn't terribly interesting.
Legendary Hero is Dead. I've read the manga and am enjoying the show.
Alice Gear Aegis Expansion. Yet another anime based on a mobile game. These can be done well but this one is profoundly average. Will most likely drop.
Oshi no Ko. By the author of Kaguya-sama: Love is War, and ostensibly set in the same universe, but an entirely different sort of story. So far I'm not particularly engaged, but I will give it a couple more episodes.
Too Cute Crisis: Alien invaders that coincidentally look entirely human are coming to destroy the planet. Except their top agent falls in love with all the cute animals here. I forgot this one existed after one episode until I looked up the season's shows to see if I'd forgotten any.
Marginal Service: MIB, only in Japan and with youkai. The picture of all those studly men all naked is a damn fake lure. Not interesting in the slightest.
Hell's Paradise: the usual collection of boring normies mob characters and 'kewl' and/or 'edgy' 'tagonists and side-kicks. Worth it for the interesting island they are exploring. Weird and nasty, worth checking out if you like the worlds of Otherside Picnic or Made in Abyss.
Heavenly Delusion: two stories, one of kids in a strange refuge, one of two weirdos traveling the post-apocalyptic (?) remains of Japan. Nice animation and intriguing start.
Greylurker |
Otaku-Elf is my nice warm comfort show for the season.
Summary: An Elf was summoned to Japan in the distant past. She was enshrined as a local god and has been living there for around 400 years. She has become a giant geek shut in and her current Shrine Maiden is doing her best to get her to come out into the world.
Elda (the Elf) has pretty much stayed locked in her room after some kid made fun of her ears 60 years ago.
Phillip Gastone |
Problem I had with Hell's Paradise is that a lot of the criminals/executioners get short shrift. The cannibal geisha was there just to get whacked in her first scene as well as the limb stretching monk. Plus the lead guy is basically One-Punch man but it misses the point of OPM. Saitama is BORED being unstoppable and really wants someone to make him sweat.
