No no, I've already watched the sub by myself.

AAAAAND We're off. New season is Go!

First up;
Space Patrol Luluco: 7 minutes of Studio Trigger Crazy. While her dad is frozen in ice a 13 year old girl must become a Space Cop to pay the bills. Not that she has an actual choice in the matter.

This is clearly going to be the show that lets Trigger go nuts this season. From Chief Over Justice to the space gun it's a nice short pile of crazy.

Ushiop and Tora The battle against Hakumen no mono continues as the evil nine tails sets a new plan to destroy the Beast Spear in motion. Very nice restart and really shows just how much Hakuman fears the Spear and why. Plus the amneasia plot is a nice way to reintroduce everything

Jojo; Diamond is unbreakable and right into the action as Jojo's meet and a new battle begins in 1999. New Jojo is an interesting guy (as long as you don't insult the hair) His stand is an odd one, with a lot of creative ways that it could be used.

Did Ushio and Tora ever get better at all? I watched a few episodes (7 or 8, I think) but gave up after I realized it basically had no plot, and it was really more like "The Beast Spear and Tora Show" because Ushio is a useless lump.

Ushio built a harem, went demon mode crazy, Harem combed the evil out, Harem decided who was best girl, there was Time travel, Big Bad was revealed, History of the spear was revealed, bunch of other guys tried to take the spear, Big Bad manipulated and slaughtered lots of people via proxy.

also Tora likes Hamburgers

My Hero Academia In a world where 80% of the population has some kind of super power, the profession of Superhero has become a reality. One young boy wonders "Can I become a hero without a superpower"

Really nice start on this one. Good sense of comic book action and a good intro to the main character and his school bully/rival. And the supreem hero of this world All Might. Great big red, white and blue Golden Age Superman type.

of course the answer to the kid's question is "Batman" but we'll see where this goes.

Watched the first episode of Lost Village today. It looks like it has potential. It also looks like it will be quite messed up.

well...that's a neat bit of info. Apparently the final of Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans took place in Edmonton

Started Haikyu after massive amounts of recommendations. Its decent, but I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. Maybe its because I'm not female.

Liberty's Edge

Unlikely since its targeted at boys. 'Serious' sports manga in general don't translate very well, especially if you're not into the sport.

You obviously haven't been paying attention to the changes in the genre with Free and and now Haikyu. The addition of homoerotic undertones is strong. So much shipping.

Pfft. That sounds like you're implying homoerotic undertones weren't ALWAYS a part of any sports series, manga/anime or otherwise.

Liberty's Edge

Still doesn't change the fact that it's a Shonen Jump property, therfore aimed at Junior High School boys.

Also having seen an episode or two of Free and such I think you're projecting the American tendency to call any sort of serious masculine friendship or bonding as homoerotic onto it.

No. I haven't actually watched more than an episode of it. I'm basing it off of the half dozen female fangirls I know who gush over it and ship the hell out of it and the 0 guys I know who give a s#%# about either series. From what I've seen, both of these shows are have tapped into the female demographic huge but get only mildly above average reviews from guys. And seriously, the amount of skinship in Free pegs the charts, not counting the massive amount of female fanservice there is with the underwater shots.

Liberty's Edge

It's certainly possibly with Free, but Haikyu is a show based on a comic for preteen boys, so the homoeroticism there is almost certainly in the fangirls' minds.

What I've seen from the season thus far:

Boku no Hero Academia [My Hero Academia]: I don't like wimpy kids, but the protagonist IS trying to be a hero, and I'm okay with growing-up stories. I hear he mans up pretty well, so I'll keep watching.

Hundred: Do you like High School Robot Suit Action Battle Harem Comedies? This is one of those. XD The animation could be a bit better, but it's... average, I guess? Not amazing, but if you like the genre, it's a decent entry. Irrelevant for everyone else. The thing with Emile is funny, at least. (Also, I read the first volume of the novel. *Coughs*)

Seisen Cerberus: It needs to explain more of what's going on. There was a fair bit of action, but no exposition, so we're mostly left to guess and put the pieces together. I'll give it another two episodes to straight out.

Gakuen Toshi Asterisk [The Asterisk War] (Season 2): You're only going to care if you watched the first season and enjoyed it, because it's a direct continuation of the utterly unresolved plot. XD

Lost Village: 30 people set out to a mysterious village spoken of in urban legends to start a new life away from the restrictions of modern society. Identifying themselves only by their Internet handels each has their own reasons for seeking this new life free of rules...but will it really go as easily as they believe.

First impression after episode 1

....people is gonna die
....and they is gonna die messy

I got about half-way through Hundred and gave up. It's not that I dislike the genre but it seemed so thoroughly average that I could not get interested in it. I will probably also give Asterisk War a miss because I can't remember anything about what happened in season 1.

Macross doesn't immediately interest me like the original or Frontier did. It's a natural development of the basic 'music = magic' conceit of the series but an all-bard party (with their meatshield mechs) magically soothing the savage beasts was a bit hard to swallow at first. It doesn't help that that Protagonist-kun didn't interest me at all and the music didn't appeal. Some of the CG seemed coarse and clunky. The rest of the animation was decent.
I will continue to watch it and see if it gets better. Heck, I persevered and got through M7, so even if Md turns out to be a stinker this should be a breeze.

Sailor Moon Crystal s3. Better opening song and a quite good end (reminds me of Kogarashi Sentiment from Bakemonogatari). I like the new transformations, and they fit better with the rest of the animation style. Plot is some shadowy cosmic entity makes monsters and the girls have to fight them and find out whodoingit. It's still not a show I would watch on my own but my girlfriend loves SM so we watch it together. It's amazing that she puts up with my constant snark.

So I started watching Erased ("Boku Dake ga Inai Machi") last night. I only planned on watching one or two episodes, but the series hooked me so hard that I ended up watching the entire thing in one sitting. It was just that good.

Honestly, I'm not sure it is the best series to blitz. Waiting time between episodes allowed the suspense to build pretty well.

But yes, definitely is that good.

While I do agree that there are some series that work better in small doses over time, rather than binge-watching them - KonoSuba was one of those - there's a very heavy asterisk there in that such designations are entirely personal, speaking to an individual's personal tastes rather than any sort of objective criteria for how the show is "best" viewed.

...at least, I think so.

Hundred Have you seen Infinite Stratos before? Ok now add giant alien monsters. that pretty much covers it.

Cerberus Once there was a powerful evil dragon. Re:Zero starting life over in a fantasy world Guy goes to 7/11 for some grub blinks and finds himself in a fantasy world. Gets beat up by thugs, meets a cute half-elf, helps a kid find her mom, tracks down a thief

and then gets horribly murdered

only to find himself at his most recent save point.

I like this one a great deal and it looks like it will be worth watching. MC has an interesting power although it clearly requires him to die before it activates.

It's basically incorporating a bit of Video game logic into the world setting.

Imagine reloading from save points as part of your life. What would that be like to be your Skyrim character experiencing horrible pain and death and then getting a chance to try again.

"oh right this one breath fire" as you suffer the agony of your flesh boiling away under dragon breath. The sound of it crushing your bones and the pain of being ripped in half before finding your self at the gats of WhiteRun ready to head down to that same tower where you know it's waiting to do it again.

Twin Star Exorcists Boy meets Girl who fell from the sky. Together they slaughter monsters.

This is one that will benefit from the 3 episode rule. I'm coming into it as a fan of the Manga so I know where it's going. The Heart of the series is the relationship between the two leads Rokuro and Benio. If the Anime can get that relationship right it's going to be a lot of fun. If they don't get it right this will be Generic Shonen Action show #1 million and 8

The anime did expand on what was in the Manga a bit, including explaining why Benio falls from the sky. Some nice action scenes and nasty looking monsters

but ultimatly its going to come down to the chemistry between the two main charactes.

Ok just watched the two seasons for this. Pretty awesome. Lots of loose ends for a Season 3 (although last show of Season 2 had a final 'never again' ring to it...)

Yes, he is not a wimp by any means. And I'm not talking about physical prowess so much as his mental endurance and what he is willing to do. Plus think on this, what if you had a shonen hero like Naruto, Goku, or Luffy with a high INT score.

Stuff I've watched so far:

Boku no Hero Academia: I think people have done a fairly good job describing it so I'm just going to say, Tsuyu Asui is best girl.

Koutetsujou no Kabaneri: Follows a familiar setting of humans being brought to the brink of extinction while living in isolated settlements while a monstrous threat tries to invade their walls. Shown in other anime like God Eater and Attack on Titan. Hopefully unlike AoT there will be less pointless hypothesis on the nature of allegory and fanboy/girl-ism. That SAID, HOLY S%+$! The animation reminds me of a more up to date 90's style which I love. Plus I'm really big into movement either of the characters and or environment and there were parts of the show I loved for that reason. The "shot out the window" being a great example. You'll know it when you see it.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable: I was worried that I wouldn't care about Josuke as a MC with Jotaro being in the show but it seems like he'll fit right into the JoJo verse without being overshadowed by his predecessor.

Macross Delta: Macross is f%+@ing dead to me. I mean if you want the cartooniness of Macross 7 taken to not 11 but 21 with with a HEAVY MAGICAL GIRL TRANSFORMING IDOL GROUP theme (no I am not joking they actually transformed) where people stop running for their lives in a live fire fight to cheer on the posing mecha then you might be up for this. This is not Macross. This is not Macross Plus. This is not Macross Zero. This isn't even Macross Frontier. This is Macross "I block your missiles with my hologram parachute shield that has my winking at you 'teehee' kawaii desu face on it". The younger weebs will love it to pieces, me not so much.

Kiznaiver: Something tells me Trigger is going to make me fall in love again with this one. The ideas behind the show appeal to me greatly.

Mayoiga: Shows like this end one of two ways. The mystery is great and worth the ride or mind boggling stupid and doesn't work within it's own logic thereby being a complete waste of your time. Only time can tell. Also calling it now Pitan and the other dude, brother and sister.

I've watched others but those were the ones that made impressions one way or another. Still more shows to look at this season so I can't wait to look at the rest. Think I'll check out Flying Witch and Kumo Miko next.

I believe I already mentioned I liked the Flying Witch manga, so obviously I like the anime as well.
Very laid-back, pleasant humor and personalities. Nothing exaggerated, nothing ridiculously energetic, just simple, easy fun.

Waruko wrote:

To be fair, Jotaro had about as much character as a cardboard box in Stardust Crusaders to begin with, so overshadowing a character with even a little bit of, well, character (much less one as flamboyant and full of potential for development as Jousuke) was never in the cards.

He does continue the depressing trend of the previous JoJo completely failing to keep in practice between seasons. Even if he didn't think a new threat would appear, he didn't think stopping time might have OTHER uses? Would certainly make it easier to snap photos of fast moving marine life, for example.

I'm still nettled from Joseph losing to D'arby last season (LITERALLY THE FIRST HAMON TRICK YOU LEARNED WAS KEEPING WATER IN A GLASS UPSIDE DOWN JOSEPH).

Just watched the two first episodes of Kuma Miko and I love it. Instantly got me hooked. Cute and sweet and fun.

Hayate in Md already shows more signs of personality than Alto or Basara, and is even slightly more likable than those two. Still not sold on the magic music bit (I though it was borderline in Frontier) but we can hope for some proper mech action later. Still don't like the magical girl bit. My girlfriend loves it so far.

SMC is more of the same of last season - Chibi-Usa is creepy, Usagi is annoying and the villains are useless. Best scene from ep 2.: Mamoru telling the girls to call him if they get in trouble.
Talk about delusional.

Yeah, everyone knows that Usagi is the only one ever allowed to resolve a problem or defeat an enemy.

...

I haven't been watching. XD Is that still true?

eh, she was pretty useless for much of it with the other sailor scouts doing the important stuff.

I've also heard that Tuxedo Mask is no longer in the running for 'worst anime boyfriend' anymore, he actually does stuff too. As opposed to the original, who seemed to sit there and watch Usagi/Serena get curbstomped until it was time to plant that rose into the concrete. Back when the old dub was on TV, I was dating a woman whose middle daughter was a major fan of the show. I caught enough of the series to understand all the gags when a weird friend decided he wanted us to see

Spoiler:
Papillion Rose - which basically came across as Sailor Moon: The Porn Parody. That one guy is almost single handedly responsible for what little I know of hentai.

The only anime character named Papillon I know of isn't from hentai, but he IS one, so it must be a trend.

Best bit about Sailor Moon in general: the post-transformation poses and 'punish with love' lines the girls come with.

And the parodies like Ebiten's SM episode or Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu Love.

WOOT! Amazon Japan has just put the tenth volume of Overlord up for pre-order! The book finally releases as of May 30th!

Twin Star Exorcists has finished it's set up. Hopefully it'll stop rushing things now.

Plot: Our two main characters have been told they will give birth to the greatest exorcists who will ever live.
So now these two 14 year olds who can't stand each other have just been told they have to get married and have a kid together to save the world.

They are about as excited over that idea as you would expect them to be.

Silver Crusade

So Nagato Kei is finally going to do something about Satou the Hat.... and The Hat's video at the end of Ajin 13 sent chills down my spine (especially when he opens his eyes after declaring he would rule Japan).

Awesome!

I had my wife and our friend in Texas watch Your Lie In April while we waited for the new episode of Assassination Classroom to be released. It suitably crushed their souls so only Koro-sensei could help. (Of course, I read the manga so I know what is coming as well.)

My wife and I watched that one as well - I am no longer allowed to tease her about Tori Amos (who I admit is insanely talented - just not my cup of tea).

With so much of Your Lie In April being about music I feel like the anime is the way to take in the story rather than a manga, but that's just me.

Parasyte was my most anticipated anime last year. I read the manga in middle/high school and loved it.

The character design changes and "modernizing" of the anime actually only improved it IMO, minus the omission of Shinichi's hilarious Engrish shirts.
