Court rules against gay marriage bans in Wisconsin and Indiana.
The Wisconsin attorney general, however, says that he's going to appeal to the Supreme Court, and the current stay on same-sex marriages is going to remain in effect for now.

So, when two lesbians have a professional use DNA drawn from cell of one woman into egg of her lesbian lover letting them have a child of their own and be biological parents they can get married? Sorry gays, you need to wait to the moment when we will be able to coax your stem cells into forming an egg and later trigger your body into forming a placenta...
We've produced sperm and ova from adult somatic cells in mice, and while as I recall the work by Katsuhiko Hayashi produced sperm from male mice and ova from female mice, it's possible to do the reverse. We haven't to my knowledge (and this isn't my sub-field) done this in humans. Yet.
Artificial wombs will happen as well to aid those without one or those with other issues precluding their carrying a child to term.
It'll happen. And I will smile when it does because it will help people and because it's just freaking cool.

No one is stopping you from eating Chik-Fil-A.
As to whether or not I ever will depends entirely on if the company keeps campaigning against gay rights. One guy dying doesn't affect that.
The latter is what I was curious about. This thread is the closest I get to any kind of politics so I wasn't for sure if it was just him campaigning against gay rights or if the the company was behind him as well. If I recall a lot of the company's reactions boiled down to "Uh huh, sure thing Cathy. Now here's your warm milk so you can go back to bed." But I wasn't for sure.

That all pretty much depends on if WinShape, the charitable branch of chick-fil-a will continue to pass out money to anti-gay causes. If they quietly stop spending on religious antigay organizations and quietly funnel that money into more secular charities then I think we could go ahead and start eating there. Until then, nope. Also, while the founder is dead, the man making these decisions is Dan Cathy and he is very much alive.

For the consultation. Regular doctor's visit charges, I'd assume.
Not for the actual birth control.
That article sparked another question for me though: If he was on hormone therapy, wouldn't that interact with the Pill?
Or am I missing something?

Yeah, I still won't eat there until after they stop contributing to my erasure from "their" society. I appreciate that not every franchise owner agrees with CFA HQ, but I won't help them as a company donate to those charities.
I'm not offended if anyone chooses to eat there despite that though; I understand that WalMart causes trouble, too, but I still shop there 'cause it's there.

I wonder if it will happen like that, or if instead they will figure out how to replace the DNA in a donor egg with DNA from a sperm cell and vice versa.
Both have their advantages/disadvantages.
Personally I'd go with using one of my own somatic cells as a base so that the resulting ova would carry my own mtDNA versus that of the donor (not that it really makes a difference in the end).

I do my best to avoid them because of that. I likewise avoid Ben and Jerry's because of their anti-science stance regarding biotech, infuriates me as a scientist even if they make tasty stuff. Not been there in at least a decade.

So I actually found myself having to explain how to deal with a transgendered person at work. I felt so upset that i had to explain common courtesy. This individual had obviously just started to transition. And I had to tell my co worker to for politeness sake refer to the person as the gender they are transitioning to and not stare. In this case male to female. In the end I had to approach this lady myself. I called her ma am. It went very well and I helped her out with what she needed. I feel bad though that this was not common sense.

I agree with this. as a gay married man myself, I doubt i would eat or patron someplace I know doesn't like me for something I had no control over. I am all for having boundaries and try to be as moderate as possible. But if someone is running a company and donates money to anti-gay charity I don't think I want to give them my money to help donate with.

Too much gender and sexuality issues awareness...
I watched combat in one of new Mortal Kombat games with someone playing Sonya... After the end of the fight her outfit got magically shredded (it seemed ok until the very end) revealing underboobs. Which also seemed to be larger than during the fight...
While I like seeing not fully clothed women, it looked ridiculous and unnecessary...

It's a weird gray area I find myself in; I know lots of LGBT folks who still eat there and don't care about the repercussions, and it bothers and confuses me. In the turn around, I get pretty irritated when I see the straight folks I know eating there, because to to me, it sort of invalidates their claims of being my ally.
I guess what I was trying (and failed) to say was that I'm personally a hypocrite, because I don't stand for all of my moral convictions; I won't eat at CFA anymore, and I won't shop at Hobby Lobby anymore, but I choose to look the other way when it comes to places like Wal-Mart because it's convenient for me to do so, and that's wrong, too.
In that way, I guess I'm stuck feeling like I shouldn't be allowed to blame anyone I know for doing the same, even if it contributes to my erasure.
And just because message boards don't convey body language and other incidentals, I want to make it clear that I'm only calling myself out here, and not trying to sound preachy ('cause I know this post sounds preachy without that context).

I just find it odd that a company has that level of control over your health....in Australia if you earn a lot you get private insurance and if you are an average person you mix both private and Medicare.
I am very lucky though while my employer is an Evil Bank - us minions and henchpersons get "unlimited" sick leave (I have never had to use it - 2 weeks is the longest I have had off sick at pay) paternity leave 2 weeks, maternity leave 12 weeks.
We also have
Defined diversity policies that are very actively pursued insuring everybody is treated with respect in the workplace.
- we still haven't had a female CEO, yet.

Lurked in the thread a bit and something relevant came up in the office the other day, so I thought something should be said on the subject of
Do not expect everyone to act with 'common courtesy' (as The Minis Maniac described) when interacting with people currently transitioning - a lot of folks have never dealt with that situation before in their lives. Be mindful that they aren't being ignorant or (possibly)offensive on purpose and don't get your panties in a twist about the fact that they aren't as 'in tune' with the situation as you think yourself to be. It's a learning process; referring to one of my coworkers as he took a while to become second nature, and we've been sitting next to each other for the past two months, and I like to think of myself as pretty hip when it comes to social issues like this.
If you are going to speak up and remark on how to act when interacting with trans* people, be polite and don't act so put-upon; it smacks of a certain smugness and feeling superior on a certain level.

There's a massive difference between being ignorant and being an ignoramus. Ignorance is not knowing that you should refer to someone as their preferred gender. Being an ignoramus is not even trying because one doesn't care. Honestly, it's actually pretty easy to refer to someone as the gender they present and it shouldn't take any prompting anymore. It's a common enough topic in industrialized nations that it shouldn't be a problem. I understand the difficulties in remembering when it's a long-time friend or family member but simply trying is often enough.
I had a friend who needed to change her name so she could hide from her exhusband in another state. It took some work for all of us but we did it. I imagine it's a similar thing with breaking other habits. If it's your first encounter with the person it shouldn't be an issue at all since you have no habit to break.
I agree with you that there are some trans* people who act like they are above others. Those people are fighting an uphill battle against society and are frustrated. It doesn't make it right but it does put it in perspective. When you spend most of your time telling people to call you Jill instead of Jim it gets old.
As a side note, the phrase "panties in a twist" is a bit degrading. It presumes that the female gender is weaker and then when it applies to men it is meant to emasculate them. I know that isn't your intention. It's not most people's intention with that phrase. It's something that is often on my mind when it comes up and it rubs me the wrong way. As a crossdresser I don't feel emasculated because I enjoy wearing panties. It does make it harder for society to deal with us though because they assume we are inferior.
Another side note, the other day I was just doing some basic grocery shopping and I have lost enough weight that my jeans don't stay up very well all the time. When I bent over my panties showed. Some guy asked me if I was some kind of f~%++$. I mentioned that he was the one checking out another guy's ass. His wife got a good laugh out of that. The take away from this story is that I've lost 20 pounds!

Now, I dislike the Mortal Kombat series for many reasons, its contemptuous treatment of women among them, but there's actually a reasonable explanation for that - most women when engaging in physical activity that they knew about ahead of time wear an athletic bra in lieu of the regular kind. Athletic bras tend to squish and minimize breasts, so if the bra got shredded for any particular reason, instant rather larger underboob would result. Of course given that this is Mortal Kombat, Sonya is probably rather more worried about the instant disembowelment to follow...
It's still disgusting for any number of reasons, but certainly not outside the world of possibility.

Head of the HRC goes to Southern Comfort and apologizes to trans people.
Transcript of the speech is available here.
HRC has done wrong by the transgender community in the past, and I am here to formally apologize.
I am sorry for the times when we stood apart when we should have been standing together.
Even more than that, I am sorry for the times you have been underrepresented or unrepresented by this organization. What happens to trans people is absolutely central to the LGBT struggle. And as the nation’s largest LGBT civil rights organization, HRC has a responsibility to do that struggle justice, or else we are failing at our fundamental mission.
Seems similar to the recent moves made by the UK LGB charity group Stonewall to try to be more trans inclusive.

The Mortal Kombat series has alot of issues, which are sometimes so horrifying as to be almost comical.
Although speaking of comical, I remember that time Jarek fell of a cliff in a terribly done scene and seems to yell: "I'm so Gaaaaaaay!" on his way down. That's nice, I thought, at least he learned something about himself before dying. But then he isn't dead. Still when he gets thrown off the same cliff moments later he says it again...
Well, whatever he is saying I decided then "I'm so Gaaaaaaay!" should be my awesome last words in real life.
