Fiend-Possessed Barbarian ideas

Advice

A friend of mine is starting a new game, and my original character idea could not work. Luckily I was struck by an random character concept, and I have no idea how to do it. Any advice or input would be great.

Now for the idea. A warrior possessed by a fiendish spirit slain by his great warrior ancestor. I was going to originally try barbarian (fiend totem) and sorcerer with cross-blooded abyssal/wild infernal for beefiness while "possessed" (which would be represented by the rage. However, messing with it a bit just seemed to be lack luster, and did not seem it would be fun to play currently (the friend likes gestalt, so i will try it again there). I was toying with the idea of barbarian/battle oracle/rage prophet, but all I have been hearing is that too is lack luster. So I am back at barbarian (with possible eldritch heritage abyssal). Any ideas? I am not going for full on maximization, but for something that would be fun. Using the rage as a possessed mechanic, I would probably not be as effective in combat in most situations, but it seems like a fun idea. I am still holding out for some spellcasting (not a lot, but I always love cantrips and low level spells) but I know that is unlikely.

Please help!

I suggest using one of the alternate tieflings. It notes that their fiendish qualities do not arise until puberty. This can be the core to possession, and taking fiendish flavored feats and class options. The character could not even know he is a tiefling, and the possession is the blood of fiends that flow within him. With the alternate tiefling rules, you can even customize the look and feel of the awakened fiendish blood. Check it out:

Dump dex, pick up noble scion and the tounges or haunted curse and either the natures whispers or sidestep secret, the rest barb, and you can be a close ranged killer with cha for your ac and initiative (and relflex save if sidestep secret), or some sorc crossblood for abysal and dragon blood, go into dragon desicple for some nat armor, abilities boost, and sorc progression.

Or tiefling is good (Maybe tiefling barb/cross blooded sorc/martial artist... with nightmare fist feasts).

Or, perhaps go into that demonist prestige class, cha up that barb and take magical knack for umd... or the eldrich heritige feats for some of the bloodline powers.

I suggest the Qlippoth-Spawn tiefling in particular, with it's +2 Strength, +2 Wisdom, –2 Intelligence, you will bump strength and keep up your will saves.

If going with a Charisma build, Demon-spawn is similar, but with a Cha bonus instead of Wisdom.

I think the idea of a pure barbarian with a positive charisma score is decent. Good enough charisma(basically 13+headbands to get it to 15) to get Improved Eldritch Heritage eventually, either fiend totem or spirit totem to go with either the charisma stat or the fluff and you are good to go.

The way I think you could go about with this is to pick Lesser Fiend Totem and intermediate Fiend Totem to get that demonic feel. Lesser is a great rage power, since gore is a primary attak and has a large damage die. Intermediate is a cherry on top, but I'd avoid the Greater one. It has very little benefit for a regular party.

The other rage power option is to go with all the Spirit Totem rage powers. Concealment, extra attacks and negative energy are what's on the platter here. The power tree is keyed off Charisma, so if you pick this path a higher Charisma is in order. Then again, you could build on that and eventually pick Inspire Ferocity. Giving Reckless Abandon to everyone can be a huge boon. Or branch off into Oracle of Bones and get the revelation that makes all your negative energy attacks cause bleed. With Greater Spirit Totem in tow, your mere presence inspires your enemies' blood to start to flow.

Going with the flavor in mind, a superstitious barbarian could be cool. Enhanced senses, enhanced intuition and all-around feel of fidgety mania. Cool and beneficial, since the different sense types are something other classes need either spells, races or items for.

Or you could just take Invulnerable Rager. Sure, it's cookie cutter, but that thing really is darn powerful and might even fit your fluff. You could take Urban Barbarian on the side for added flexibility.

You may want to re-consider rage prophet. Yes, it's lackluster from a pure combat or pure spellcasting perspective, but it allows you to improve rage powers and oracle abilities simultaneously. If you plan for 6 levels of barbarian (invulnerable rager and possibly totem warrior if you want to blend fiend totem and spirit totem powers) and treat spells as nice bonus instead of a primary function, it can work. You can always expand your rage powers and revelations with the Extra Rage Power and Extra Revelation feats. I'd also recommend looking at the Anscestor mystery and the possessed oracle archetype (both in Ultimate Magic).

If playing in a gestalt game, then barbarian (invulnerable rager totem warrior)//oracle (possessed oracle, Anscestor mystery) would probably work very well.

Synthesist barbarian hybrid might work too going with the spirit totem. Biped half elf concentrating evolutions on improving stats horns and wings
