Potions of Range: Personal

Can you buy potions of spells that have a range of 'Personal' by RAW? The only text I can find in the Core that relates to this is:

Quote:
It can duplicate the effect of a spell of up to 3rd level that has a casting time of less than 1 minute and targets one or more creatures or objects.

For instance, a potion of shield only has 1 target ('you'), meets the casting time limit requirement. Thoughts?

Spells with range personal cannot be made into potions. The relevant text is in the Creating Magic Items section of the Magic Items chapter.

The imbiber of the potion is both the caster and the target. Spells with a range of personal cannot be made into potions.

Yeah, they failed to include that line in the Potions section, so you have to look in two different places to know everything about potions.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Also, don't be fooled by the fact that many of the NPCs in the Gamemastery Guide are listed as having potions of personal-range spells; I just forgot that rule when I was writing the umpteen stat blocks. :(

(of course, you could just as well create single-use wondrous items that do the exact same thing for the exact same cost and are not restricted to non-personal 1st-3rd level spells, so just call them "elixirs" instead of "potions" and you're all good)

Just make sure the antagonist uses up all those elixirs of true strike before the PCs loot his body... :)

And yet there are many Potions of Vanish in the Jade Regent.

Just a hunch, but that may have something to do with the fact that Vanish isn't a personal range spell.

Vanish is not a personal spell. Thus you can make potions of it.

Divine Favor, however, is a personal spell. And at least one Jade Regent NPC has a potion of it, and it's included in his tactics block.

See Jiggy's post for why that is. The rules were accidentally split in two places.

Statblocks contain errors from time to time.

Thanks for the information. Can I get the specific page number for better reference, or at least a link to the SRD? Thanks! :)

Open the book to the Table of Contents. Look at Chapter 15: Magic Items. Run your finger down until you hit Magic Item Creation. Turn to page 548 and read until you hit potions.

Brew Potion

That being said, potions of vanish at CL1 (as they are in jade regent) are almost utterly useless, as it will expire before your next turn.

You can still move 30 feet!
