Well, you can actually... But not as easily as on normal forums. This does the trick:
[ url=yourlink ] yourlink [ /url] (just erase the spaces)
Why doesn't it just automatically recognizes it is just one of the reasons this messageboard is stuck in the 90's.
Not what I meant. I meant putting the image itself directly in the post.

If you mean the thing where you insert tags that will embed an image hosted somewhere other than paizo.com directly in the page, no we will not be doing that. The main reasons are: Remotely hosted images can be changed maliciously to become pornographic or shock images. It is a security risk. And most importantly, we prefer people to use their words rather than depending on a "U MAD BRO" image macro to communicate. There's lots of places on the internet for that kind of thing, just not here.

Oh, my bad. Confused the terms there. :D
But, the point still stands. Paizo board has like 50% of the features of rest of the boards. Not to mention the serious need for private message system. Don't get me even started on the outdated design.
I know, I know the mob is going to lynch me now because they like it better this way, but as a html/php developer I cannot help but constantly be amazed by the 90's feel here. In a bad way.

Yeah, turning Paizo into 4chan isn't an idea I'd like to see.
I've seen lots of gaming boards with it (Total War Center and Gaia come to mind) that don't have too many issues. There's the occasional porn drop, but it gets deleted and punishment meted out fairly quick.
Come to think of it, though, this could make already long forums even worse. I know I'd probably use it every other post, and that'll clog things up. As much as I want the feature, Paizo has a point here.

Yeah, turning Paizo into 4chan isn't an idea I'd like to see.
Seriously, what's with the worst case scenarios here? Does Paizo have the same users as 4chan? No. Do we discuss the same topics as 4chan? No. Are there forums that have img tags/hotlinking that aren't overflowing with shock images and pornographic contents? Yes. They're called 'most of them'.

You mean like pictures of puppies that haven't been adopted yet, right?
Oh, man, Cheapy, it gets much worse than that. You could have images of polar bear babies being tickled. Everywhere.

On a more serious note: imagine that embedded in my signature. Right next to a kitten tripping and a puppy smiling at you.
You would get to see that every single time I posted. Over and over and over.
And everyone would get to do that.
So, yeah, no thank you. No "modern" forum things like sigs and embedded images, please and thank you.

OR
you could disable an option to embed pictures in signatures? Or disallow gifs, allow images up to certain size?
For example, here's my post on another forum, with an embedded image in my signature. Is it truly that terrible?

You really want Paizo staff to waste time chasing after penis images instead of doing something constructive?
Free-for-all sigs/avs are cool and dandy on private forums, but there are reasons why you don't get them on company forums.
I won't even get into copyright infringements that can happen with that.

It's not a private forum, it's a forum of my University. Our moderator team (of which I am part of) consist completely of students, with tech guys being administrators. Moderators are volunteers. We have rules about the allowed sizes for avatars, images in signatures, the content of it, etc.
Giant in the Playground forums, while not being a full-fledged company, also sells merchandise on its site, has strict rules about posting, and what is allowed and disallowed in signatures.

I like that these forums are an older style and that Paizo isn't trying to make yet another needless social media website or something silly. 90's style message board is perfect, even got the RSS bookmark thing to display the forum so I can skip the houserules stuff.
Though...
We could totally use more ponies around this place. ;)
(I'll likely regret this but you guys could use ASCII art for some kind of signature. You shouldn't as signatures are pointless and just clutter up the page others are trying to read, but that doesn't mean your incapable of doing it.)

See, you are volunteers. GitP forum mods are volunteers too.
Now, Paizo forum staff are not volunteers, they get paid. They get paid from the money that comes out of my credit card each month.
I'd love to know that this money is going on new awesome products, smart marketing, cuddly customer service and Cosmo. What I don't want is that money to go on having an extra hire or overtime for chasing down penis images and forum sigs that go "I'll kick your mother's puppy if you play 4E" in Polish.
Unpaid volunteers don't work. One day you'll make someone like me a volunteer and you'll end up with more trouble than worth. Or maybe even a lawsuit.

I'll play nice. Promise.
It's not about playing nice. It's about the fact that Paizo, as a company, is liable for what happens on this forum. Between defamation, insults, copyright violations, NDA breaches and nuke launch codes, a lot can happen on a forum. Now do you want to have your employees, whom you control and who answer to you responsible for that, or random strangers who can just go *poof*?

To tell the truth, for basically every feature request related to our messageboards you can probably just go to my profile page, click on my posts tab, and search my posts for keywords related to the feature you're requesting. Or search the website feedback forum. It's rare that we get a request that hasn't been made before. And when I reply to a request with a bunch of links to previous posts where I've talked about that particular feature, that's what I'm doing to find those posts.
So, signatures: No. Animated gifs: No. Smilies: No. Inline images: No. Private messages: Someday. Volunteer moderators: No. Private avatars: No. Switching to 3rd-party bulletin board software: No. Firing the twelve-year-olds responsible for our website design and getting us out of the '90s: Someday. Using PHP: No. Outsourcing website design, maintenance, moderation: No. Adding features like focus, dots, x new, aliases, enhancing play-by-post, etc: ongoing.

Write a greasemonkey script to automatically load images referenced in links in posts. Share it with your friends. Problem solved.
People have created a 'ignore person' Greasemonkey script, loading images should be a snap.

That doesn't actually work very well. For example, when I searched your posts for "inline images", I got this.

For example, here's my post on another forum, with an embedded image in my signature. Is it truly that terrible?
Are you the Nameless One? If you are the Nameless One, why do you tell people every time you post? It defeats the purpose of being nameless. And if you are the Nameless One, why do you have a name above your avatar pic in that post? If you're not the Nameless One, what's the point of saying you are in your signature?
... so all the evidence seems to suggest that yes, that is a terrible image.

I want to hug you, Gary Teter. I mean I really like the simplicity of the Paizo messageboards. They're not cluttered with custom images and I know when I see an avatar image that it's somehow related to Paizo. Like mine is a ghoul from the cover of The Skinsaw Murders. I'd rather have that than have random people with Super Mario heads or Modern Warfare 3 logos, or their favorite sports team. Signatures really are just clutter on the page. If they have images in them? They're even more clutter than plain text signatures. I hate when I find that signatures take up at least 50% of the total time I spend scrolling down the forum page. We have an About Me section here on Paizo.com and that's a much better place for the kinds of information people would want to put in a signature.
I do look forward to the day when this forum has private messages, but that's really the only thing I miss that is standard on other forums. That could be resolved with a Forum-to-email solution though, so forum members could send emails to other forum members without giving out their own email address. (Of course there could be concerns with the form submission-to-email being exploitable by spammers.) Having it go directly to email would remedy message storing issues though.

I like things as they are.
I'd love a system to include a few images linked to my profile so that people could download maps I made... but que sera sera.
I rather like that the images are sparse and there's lots of white space. It makes it one of the least obnoxious forums I know of.
My eyes don't like the white to be honest. It's not as bad as some shades of yellow of course, but it's not pleasant either.

Although, just about 100% of the "bad" reasons why Paizo doesn't want to have signatures, or images, etc would be erased if a posting member is required to attach his or her real first & last name to every post. It's amazing how civil and clean things remain when a person can't hide behind a screen.
EDIT 3: Took out the quote, and cleaned up what I was saying so I could sound smarter than your average bear.
