It should be noted that, due to the length of this and the surrounding sentences, begins on page 55, but wraps well onto page 56 also. I love Tolkien's heroic/legendary writing style, because despite the drawn-out nature of the prose, one never gets confused and has to reread for clarity.
"Then was the labor of Tinuviel begun, and though she labored with the deftness of an Elf long was the spinning and longer weaving still, and did any come and hail her from below she bid them gone, saying: 'I am abed, and desire only to sleep,' and Dairon was much amazed, and called often up to her, but she did not answer."

"And although she had not tried to meet their eyes, the first folk she passed on her way to the gate did look her over slowly and mistrustfully, but she realized after a moment that this man and woman were doing so only because most of the other travelers were dressed and clean for market: Briony was a dirty stranger, not a regular stranger."

Thread resurrection time!
"Radiating from the pyramid, like the spokes of a wheel, there are to be forty grand avenues of approach, each thirty-five miles long, and each fenced on both sides by skull-less skeletons standing a yard and a half apart and festooned together in line by short chains stretching from wrist to wrist and attached to tried and true old handcuffs stamped with my private trademark, a crucifix and butcher-knife crossed, with motto " By this sign we prosper"; each osseous fence to consist of 200,000 skeletons on a side, which is 400,000 to each avenue."
King Leopold's Soliloquy, Mark Twain (1905).
