Silver Crusade

Hello so i want to make a necromancer but i dont want the 50 thousand undead follower builds i want to focus on the necromantic spells

So i was thinking a gnome because they can get +1 to dc of necromancy if they swap out one of their racial traits
then with the two spell focus feats i can get an additional +2 bringing me up to +3 dc

so with a sorcerer and starting at 18+2 race charisma putting my points to level 8 in that and a +4 head band wind up with a 26 giving me a 8 modifier

that makes my 1st level necro spells dc 22

Is there any way i can improve that or something that may be a better route
like maybe ditching the gnome for an int race and going arcanist where i can get a +2 from using a pool point with the arcana that doubles their one ability that lets you increase caster level or dc by

Also is there some way to make a singular undead follower with magic kind of like a companion? i just don't want to bog down or ruin a game by making hordes

Your best course of action is just to use Animate Dead to create one very powerful minion. There's one archetype that does give an undead companion, but it's a bad archetype and the undead companion it provides is weaker than what you can create with Animate Dead anyways.

Summoner will give you a single minion that upgrades over time. Otherwise your going to have to just trade up whenever you find something big enough to fill your animate dead HD. For everything else I recommend going with an enervation build. Basically the classic metamagic blaster build but focused on enervation instead of fireball

Necromancer's Guide

Very good guide to get you started.

I recommend Wizard myself with a 13-14 Cha to start for Channel Command Undead. Just steal the Undead when they show up.

Undead Lord Cleric...but Honestly just Animate 1-2 good critters and leave it at that.

I myself use the Magic Jar, they fight, I animate what dies and push them into the dungeon. Rinse and Repeat raising more as they fall. Makes a snowball style effect and usually the critters you find make great undead minions.

Good luck

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Note that even lower-level spells can be good support -- cause fear and blindness/deafness are favorites at low level.

A lot of necromantic spells are touch or short range, so Reach Spell is a good metamagic feat. So is Persistent Spell (force a second save if they succeed on the first).

Sorcerors are more flexible with metamagic, but wizards get higher level spell slots first -- think carefully which you would prefer to have.

Maybe an unusual build, but might I suggest the Necroccultist? The powers it gets are kinda meh, but you can cherry-pick your favourite Necromancy spells. And, especially if you want one big companion rather than a horde, the Necromantic Servant is pretty sweet. I have a PFS Necroccultist at level 8, and I love it. Shove a Keen scimitar in its hands and go to town. Transmutation as a second implement to boost its powers (Size Alteration isn't limited to creature type, so you can make him Large, and slap Bane on him when you feel like it). First few levels are tough (aren't they always), but then you have a companion by your side pretty much all the time that just won't die. The thing has DR5/Bludgeoning (pretty rare, IMHO), half your HP, when it would die, as an immediate and a Mental Focus, it's whole again, and it sorta scales with your level. Hell, hang your Abjuration focus on him and he can spend swift actions to get a temporary buffer of HP every round.

It will never be truly amazing, I must admit (it's never going to be a Tiger animal companion or an eidolon), but you still have your full bag of tricks as an Occultist up your sleeve. Occultists can do some crazy stuff. A skeleton with iteratives and a Keen weapon is pretty dangerous.
