Is there a way for a monk to gain a familiar without multi-classing?

Eldritch Heritage(Arcane Bloodline)

Eltrich heritage, arcane bloodline. Feat is in the Ultimate Magic.

Edit: Ninja'd!

Sweet, perfect, just what I was looking for, graci!

Note the Cha requirement though. Monks are MAD enough as it is.

Optimization is the first to die for awesomeness.

Certainly a fair point as long as the player is aware of the situation as far as optimization goes. IMO anyway. I'd hate for someone to do an awesome and flavorful build only to become disappointed about their lack of effectiveness later.

Just as a note, there are actually several sorcerer bloodlines that offer familiars; arcane is probably the best of the bunch, but it does depend on what you're looking for.

Personally, I'm rather fond of the serpentine bloodline, for example.

Only if he takes Imp Familiar at lvl 7 and gets his own mini Inevetable.

Thats awsome sauce. Though a monkey would be cool to. We had a monk that started teaching a pet monkey he had kung fu. He didnt really have monk levels but he had tricks that let him punch and kick and look like he was mimicing kung fu stances.

I think at some point he did end up awakening the monkey and he became a 1st lvl monk.... funny stuff.

The familiar is at level -2 so it will have to be 9th level.

You can't take improved familiar with eldrich heritage. Improved familiar requires arcane caster level, eldrich heritage gives you sorcerer's level.

Aren't sorcerers arcane casters?

eldrich heritage does not grant you a Caster level. You are not an arcane caster. What it gives you is the bloodline power and you count your level – 2 as your sorcerer level for that power only.

You can;t take the feat as you are not an arcane caster.

I didn't look up the feat. The way he worded it seemed wrong. You're explanation is much clearer.

What use do you see for a familiar on a monk?

Familiars are heavily casting based. Monks don't cast. I fail to see the point.

If you want a pet, there are better options ihmo.

Multiclassing strikes me as a better option in this case. Sure, you're giving up a Monk level (or even a few) if you multiclass, but you only need a mental ability of 11 to make use of 1st level spells, and you'd also save 2 feats. Having 3-6 caster levels (with the trait for +2 caster levels) could also be tremendously useful. Mage Armor and Shield are also great buffs for a Monk.

Eldritch Heritage might be a really nice trick for Bards, but for non-casters like Monks the options seem pretty limited. Improved familiars have much more utility starting at caster level 5. I kind of imagine a Wiz 3/Monk X with a combat capable small earth elemental familiar styled as "Stone Monkey" being both more effective and a potentially richer RP character than a plain Monk X+3 who sunk two feats into getting a less useful familiar.

Scribe Scroll (a Wizard bonus feat) for magic prayer strip type things could be a fun RP element, and Craft Wondrous Items could be fun and useful in the right campaign. Brew Potion might be fun for a drunken monk if the DM would agree that you can combine a potion and alcohol, but that's really a game by game decision.
