Human Favored Class Alternative: Paladin

Rules Questions

3 people marked this as FAQ candidate.

Paladin: Add +1 to the paladin’s energy resistance to one kind of energy (maximum +10).

The question is: Can you choose positive or negative energy as the energy type?

Shadow Lodge

If you can find me an example of Positive/Negative Energy Resistance in the rules, I would say yes.

I love human flavor.

Never mind I misread the Thread title.

I've never seen anything saying you can't, and I can't think of any reason to say no, so I'd personally allow it.

Tome of Horrors has a monster feat Resistant to Negative Energy that can be taken twice, each granting 5 resistance to negative energy damage/healing.

Not really what he was looking for I think. Unless the class allows it I would say no.

Shadow Lodge

Hmm, well it isn't Core, but that's never bothered me before. I would allow it.

Shadow Lodge

I like it, very flavorsome for paladins to get negative energy resistance (and undead human anti-paladins to get positive energy resistance). But i guess fire resistance also suits Paladins of Sarenrae or Iomedae

I don't see why not.

Liberty's Edge

I don't think so, I believe the only energy resistance you can get are outlined somewhere in the book where it shows the elements and the energies connected with them

A similar debate came up at the convention I was at where a friend plays a Sorcerer Archtype that allows him to change energy into lightning (e.g Fireball could be a Lightning ball) he wanted Magic Missile to be lightning balls (for flavour purposes only) but Force Energy cannot be changed despite being 'an energy' I believe positive/negative energy is in the same boat. While it is an energy it also isn't

But in a home campaign I would have no issue with it. My Paladin took Fire so that the Wizard can go ahead and throw Fireballs in without worrying about me. The energy favoured bonus and a ring of Fire Protection brings me 20 Fire Resist, add my pretty decent saves and I take minimal damage and have LoH if unlucky
