Since I'm having a time keeping everything in order, with conversations from three days ago still ongoing IC... :)
The chronology of events... from Mel's perspective:
- Caravan leaves, the day is peaceful,
- except for Mel harrassing Hrunndalf,
- and the cooking lesson.
- With Myri and Shalelu on scout patrol. In the evening, in order as best I can tell
- a really wonderful dinner,
- strange, haunting music, from the dark,
- Mel and Alaric's conversation which ended simutaneously with the
- drunken singing contest, followed by
- Mel and Lio conversation.
- Mel returns with mushrooms,
- Mel and Myri talk,
- Mel and Hrithik talk,
- Alaric and Kalimac talk,
- many people have private conversations with NPCs,
- shopping in Galduria.

4-8gp/pint? teak oil for caring for wood for instruments
were there any spices this area was known for, what cost?
1cp catnip
1-5gp 1 well made violet scarf
.5-2gp each thread-gold, silver and black
<2gp animal brushes
1cp bone w/ some meat still on it
5gp monacle
5sp beef jerky
??? amethyst w/ Varisian rune for good luck carved and painted into it
I think that was it. I think I ctrl-x'd it when I copied it into chat

1) 4-8gp/pint looking for teak oil or something similar for caring for wood or in this case a flute and samisen
2) 1cp catnip for Xanderghul
3) 1-5gp 1 well made violet scarf
4).5-2gp each 3 total, spools of thread, 1gold, 1silver, 1 black
5) <2gp animal brushes, 1 cat, 1 wolf (or just 2 pet brushes)
6) 1cp bone w/ some meat still on it
7) 5gp monacle
8) 5sp beef jerky
9) 5-50gp amethyst w/ Varisian rune for good luck carved and painted into it. (I may be borrowing money from Mel if this is too expensive. She okayed it ooc.)
10) was also looking to see if this area was perhaps known for a particular spice (assume not) or seeing what might be found that I could use as a gift for our good cook. Someone could probably sell me some widget that has nothing to do with what he says it does and I'd probably still believe him. sense motive 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
11) 55gp masterwork artisans tools (wood carving)

Have a good time and look forward to hearing from you whenever you're able. BTW, not sure of the time difference. for all I know I'm posting this early but sentiment is the same

My last posts before going on vacation have now been made. My posting for the next week will be strictly limited, and I may not have time on a given day to do more than resolve combat. Other situations that an NPC is involved in, or I am needed for, are about to slow way down.
Nonetheless, I might suggest that you plan for current conversations and situations to be "up to date" by the time I am done with vacation ... that gives you a week to finish any outstanding matters, and even with my limited posting schedule I am hopeful that we can start Journey Day Five/third level with most people caught up to Journey Day Five.
I will do my best to resolve gift/insult attempts that are clearly "ongoing" at this point, but if you haven't started one yet, it ain't happenin' at second level.

But it will be the good kind of hurt. The kind of hurt that comes from spending the day stacking the bodies of our oversized foes like cordwood and arranging their severed skulls into pyramids.
Are you certain Hrithik's not channeling Capt. Ròberts by mistake?

Mel is thinking more a hopefully blinded, stunned ogre slipping on greased ground, but thank you so much for that image. No wonder Alaric has nightmares about combat.
But the dice roller seems to like to roll high for my enemies... Like Gutwad who rolled a natural 19 vs color spray...

Because the only thing more terrifying than an ogre is a greased-up ogre.
Two greased-up ogres. Fighting over the last piece of KFC from the bucket.
...does anyone else look at the
series of spoilered posts and think of Stan Freberg's "John and Marsha," or is it just me?

...does anyone else look at theMel:
Alaric:
series of spoilered posts and think of Stan Freberg's "John and Marsha," or is it just me?
Definitely not just you :-) ... although I always remember the Looney Tunes version where Freburg voices Bugs Bunny doing it.
For Mel or anyone else wondering, the "punchline" of the John and Marsha satire is a ludicrously long back-and-forth exchange of two lovestruck characters, sometimes separated by a distance, sometimes locked in a passionate but chaste embrace, crying one another's names breathlessly to one another, over and over and over again:
Marsha: Oh, John!
John: (tearful face) Marsha!
Marsha: (yearning reach) John!
John: Marsha!
etc etc etc :-) ... I believe the most recent season of Mad Men had Peggy and an office boy reenacting it for giggles in 1964.

Perhaps I should have gone with... Enjoy your walk.
Yeah... 4/5ths of the work I do requires me to pay self-employment tax.
Or with... As open and honest as Mel is, why is it that she keeps confusing you?

Testing out a dice mechanic. Since my lance does double damage during a charge....
21d20 + 2 ⇒ (13, 7, 17, 5, 17, 8, 9, 15, 11, 13, 9, 4, 12, 6, 11, 11, 11, 20, 12, 8, 6) + 2 = 227
Interesting. So it stripped out the * and ( from my expression, and made 2 times 1d20 into 21d20.
I'll have to try something different.
Kalimac Proudfoot |
Actually it does 1d6, but I was mostly testing the expressions syntax and didn't care what die I used. Since I do more d20s, it rolled off my fingers onto the keyboard.
But it doesn't do 2d6 when I hit. If I Challenge someone, I get +2 to damage, and if I hit during a Charge, my damage is doubled. So if I roll a 5 on my 1d6, it would be 14 points of damage 2*(5+2). 2d6 gets all over the place.
2d6 + 2 ⇒ (3, 3) + 2 = 82d6 + 2 ⇒ (1, 4) + 2 = 72d6 + 2 ⇒ (2, 2) + 2 = 62d6 + 2 ⇒ (3, 1) + 2 = 6
See. Only on the first roll did I get the equivalent of doubling 1d6+1.
I may have to rely on Kyrademon's math skillz.
Kalimac Proudfoot |
Lemme see average d6 roll in dnd is 3.5, so doubled would be 7.
The problem would be dice rolling poorly on you.
You could always do 1d6+1 please double damage on charge
That's what I mean by relying on Kyrademon's math skillz. But I was hoping on 1337 BBCode. Alas, denied.
Melinda Sorn |
Well, using your second roll from your series of 4, if the BBC code did what you want the damage would have been 4 instead of 7.
And technically both the 1st and 3rd did what you wanted them to do, just with average and below average dice rolls.
.... Please get the dice roller to like you better before the next round of combat? I do less damage than you... We needs you :)

No, maybe just feeling a little tired...and when I do I sometimes can get a little silly. Just having fun.
I'm sitting next to Hrithik in Meatspace, and we were figuring you were worried Mel may shiv you. :-)
Kyrademon |
I have generally interpreted double weapon damage in D&D, including the lance charge bonus, to mean 2d6 rather than 2*1d6. If there is a specific statement somewhere in the rules that contradicts this, by all means please point me to it, but if it's just from the description of the lance, just use 2d6.
My understanding of the rule of thumb is that when a die roll is multiplied, you roll extra dice; quadruple damage on 2d6 = 8d6. When a number is multiplied, you just multiply it; quadruple +2 strength bonus would be +8.
(Bearing in mind that multipliers add increments when stacked rather than multiply, so a x3 critical on a x2 damage lance charge is 4d6 rather than 6d6, which is why D&D requires a degree in Noneuclidean Geometry. But it's still better than the Heroes system.)

"[Response]? So I can have a good long time to 'translate' it correctly?
Remember the site going down like a rock? Swallowed responses to Ry and to you that I only had in cache on my phone. Swallowed them whole.
Tonight is real-life roleplaying, and it will be very rude to spend it glued to my phone or pulling out my laptop. I will try to get something in the morning before going to work, but sending combat updates is taxing my during-the-day availability. (I work in an environment where it is terminally inappropriate to use computer resources for non-work activity on anything other than very short breaks, which I also need to use to eat).
And maybe in the future, maybe Mel's assistance for speaking to Alaric, I don't think the two of you speak the same language...
In-character, that is a rather large part of Hrithik's "life or death" second request of Melinda in regard to Reta's future. Hrithik has a lot of baggage, but he's not completely unaware of his Awful Lawful alignment flaws.
Out-of-character (and addressed to Ry as well) I will confess to increasing discomfort about player / character distinction, and repeat the standing offer and query as to whether or not a player-level apology-chat is necessary.
Because this is just a confusing sentence for me (Paul, the player, hi!): maybe in the future, maybe Mel's assistance for speaking to Alaric, I don't think the two of you speak the same language
is that in-character Melinda advice to in-character Hrithik concerning in-character Alaric? is that Melinda's player volunteering, ooc, the character of Melinda as a go between to roleplay between Hrithik the character and Alaric the character? Offering Melinda's *player* as a go between for Paul and Alaric's player?
who speaks different languages: the characters, the players, or both?
because if this is just OOC roleplay advice and an offer as a player to be a role-play liaison: Thanks! ... but I'd rather be having it OOC in the already-existing spoilered threads, instead of importing spoilered threads to this public OOC discussion forum.
but if this is actually a player offer to serve as a go between for other *players*, that, as Ry and I have already discussed exhaustively, is something I appreciate but consider evidence of need for GM-level involvement.
OOC is more important than a fun but silly game, and if Melinda's player is saying the two *players* can't even be in the same scene without an intermediary because the *players* can't interact, that is a crisis of the player group, and is something I consider absolutely toxic
I've given Ry permission to share some absurdly-long emails about my thoughts, OOC, about Hrithik as a character and myself as a player. Just mentioning that now. But I don't want to import long spoiler-exchanges to here: the OOC discussion thread. I'm game to share emails if that is a better place to be clearly OOC while having player-level discussions
(all of this ooc side stuff, by the by, is sucking down a *lot* of time I'd rather be roleplaying ... I've just spent my time between work and gaming writing *this* rather than rewriting Hrithik's IC stuff to you and Ry, for example ... and now I should pay attention to Kalimac's meatspace campaign)

Have much fun in the real world roleplaying night :).
Hi Paul! I'm Mana.
The following was written in notepad first, so in case of possible web site crash-age, I no lose post. Sadly it happens and I am very sorry that it happened to you.
Out of character, I do not know Alaric's player and would not presume to speak for him. Therefore the comment was Mana suggesting Mel as a go between. And you do not owe me an apology in or out of character. :)
You are right, the comment should have been done in the IC board as an OOC comment, but Mana did not think of it and it seemed to go with the other comment she made.
In Mana/Mel mind (sorry, can't make a distriction there for this) whilst Alaric and Hrithik speak languages in common (Taldane and Tien, i believe) their conversation styles are so divergent as to be somewhat different languages when it comes to the two understanding each other in character.
I am sorry that my careless comment took up response time, it was not intended as such. I will try to keep my nonsense to a minumum, I promise.
