Tark, how do you feel about Grapple? I generally stay the hell away from it, but I'm thinking that the Improved Grapple may offer Siera some choices apart from "I stand there and flurry of misses".

Dirty trick offers some interesting options as well and fits Siera's idiom.

Western martial arts has lots of interesting history behind it. Unfortunately media tends to focus perhaps a bit too much on eastern arts. I think it's because of a slight infatuation with the spiritual side of things wherein western martial arts tend to be pragmatic, practical, and often turned into some form of sport (think competitive boxing, pankration or even fencing). Eastern arts have their place and are fun to watch but I have a soft spot in my paladin heart hearing german trainers teaching students on using leverage in longsword combat.
I dunno, it has always been there for the fighting-scholar :)
The Eastern arts got a lot of popularity because of the mystique and sheer Bullshido that was peddled (and is still being peddled). Even the Eastern 'styles' (Krav/Systema) have a lot of kool-aid being passed around, Sambo seems generally OK, but BJJ is the latest soup d'jour for the fantasy warrior.
The advantage the West has is the lack of needing to adhere to lineages and the politics that go into the Eastern arts.
Personally I liked the interesting works of William Fairbarn, even his interesting work Defendu.
