Actually, officially, the hardcopy and the PDF come out at the same time. However, the book gets shipped to distributors earlier so they have it in time for the official release. Potentially the book is available earlier that way.
The book is also shipped to subscribers earlier, who then also have the book available before the official street date - provided shipping gets it to them before that date. At the same time when the books are packaged and shipped, the PDF is also made available to those subscribers where the packages are on their way - so the PDF becomes available before the official street date for those people as well.

Does anybody know when Ultimate Magic is supposed to ship? The product page says that the PDF comes online on the 18th, but in my experience, the PDF usually comes out a week or so after the book itself. Is that going to be the same case with UM, or will they come out at the same time?

I too am EAGERLY awaiting word of this having shipped from the offices of our Paizonian overlords! : )

Yes, this PDF is one of the ones I'm anticipating more than any save perhaps the Bestiary 2 and this winter's daemons book.

With less then 2 weeks to go it could be any time now.
My friends and I are starting a new game tomorrow and I've been hoping it makes it before then because one of my players is wanting to make a Magus.
That's it really, not so that I can see it, no not at all! that would be selfish. Get it for him and that's altruism that is!

As much as I want this book right away, I am getting it for much less with free shipping a week latter.
By the time it shipped from Paizo with 3 - 6 day shipping, I will get it a week latter. Minus the PDF but the savings I can aford the PDF.
Now if Paizo gave me free 2 day shipping like I am getting, then I might reconsider ordering from Paizo, but the near 7 bucks they want for 3 normal shipping is over priced

Actually, Paizo puts a lot of effort into making certain they charge exactly what they are being charged for shipping. So it isn't overpriced, it is normal priced.
Paizo does not ship near the volume that some other places do. So they can't negotiate discounted shipping rates the way a giant mega chain can. They also can't hide the cost in the profits of mass volumes of sales of other goods.
On the other hand, if you buy from another store Paizo still gets a cut. They are just as happy getting good sales numbers other places because it means increased ordering from those places and larger exposure. If you are also picking up the PDF they probably end up making almost the same amount as from a subscription.
In the end, whatever works for you works for Paizo.

The book retails for 39.99 you are saving 11 dollars even after buying the PDF for 9.99 which means you're paying about 20.00 for the book and only getting it a week after its street date. Where are you shopping cause I'd definitely like to shop there too!

The place I ordered my book is $25.80 I have free 2 day shipping. Paizo was 39.99 with shipping at $6.83 for 3 - 8 days (my experience it is closer to the 8 than 3) So you add $25.80 + $9.99 that equals 35.79
Now take Paizo's cost for the book and basic shipping 39.99 + 6.83 = $46.82
That is an $11.03 save.
And It's Amazon with a price guarentee at $25.80 Now not everyone has the free shipping for 2 day. but you can get free shipping for 3 - 5 day for just about any item purchased from Amazon

Our shipping prices very closely reflect the prices we pay. In some cases, they are lower than the prices we pay.

Regarding Amazon, I buy nearly everything through them. I've even bought clothes through them. But the PDF I get with my subscription and a strong desire to support Piazo directly (thus ensuing more lovely products to drain my wallet) keeps me buying direct from the dealer.
It's kinda a viscous cycle actually. I support them and they, in turn, make more products for me to purchase...
At what point do I go to Piazo Purchasers Anonymous?

Allow stores to put them out whenever they get them in :)
Seriously, it gives an incentive for customers to bug the store early on, the customers are also given an incentive because they may get to luck out and become one of the alpha geeks that has it early, parading it before peers, which in turn makes other customers race to the store and get it before the book has sold out.
That further gives incentive for the store to get the goods early.
The whole point of a release is to make it into a frothy crazed mad rush. Street dates suck the life out of it being a hunt for glory.
chavamana |
Part of the problem is secondary distributors. For example the gaming store out here in the middle of the ocean gets their products through Alliance. And Alliance doesn't even have Ultimate Magic listed in the products coming out this month - although they have a bunch of things that are being released in June (such as Carrion Crown #4) as being released this month.
Which may be why I changed my purchasing of things from the game store to just the Core Books...

Allow stores to put them out whenever they get them in :)
Stores *are* allowed to put them out as soon as they get them (well, they may have to wait until the next day or a midnight release)! If they're getting them early, that's a problem with the distributor (whose supply of Paizo products we directly control) and not the store (whose supply is controlled by the distributor).
I don't see how your suggestion would help the fact that delaneyalysa's FLGS doesn't bother ordering the book until a customer asks them to.
Street dates suck the life out of it being a hunt for glory.
What street dates do positively, though, is allow Store A to stay in business in competition with Store B.
Store A and Store B are in the same town.
Let's say Store B uses Distributor B who has great shipping and ships things as soon as they get them. Store B releases his books as soon as he can rip open the UPS box. Yay, the gamers get it right then and flock to his store! Win!
Store A, however, doesn't like Distributor B. Distributor B is a large corporation and doesn't really care about the little guy. Distributor A, however, is owned by a friend of Store A and is in the same town. Much like how people like to shop at their FLGS rather than buy online, Store A likes to buy from his friend's distribution business. But Distributor A can't process things as quickly internally due to a smaller staff, and can't get the volume shipping discounts of Distributor B, so he can't ship expedited. Store A gets his items a few days after Store B. But all the local gamers already have the book from Store B. So Store A can't move them.
In your scenario, Store A and Distributor A go out of business. The industry shrinks. This is bad for the publishers, the distributors, the stores, and the gamers.
This is why we use (and enforce) street dates. It keeps everything level and fair.

On the other hand, I don't order just the book; I have the "batch" shipment method in place, so I only pay about the same shipping for a whole month's worth of stuff. So, for me it's $33.99 + usually free shipping + free PDF = $33.99 vs. the $35.79 you're paying.
However, I'm a superscriber so I'm buying a ton of stuff to *get* the free shipping.
In other words, your mileage may vary.

Technically it can be the same problem in reverse: the store I sometimes work for has a sports card distributor and alliance for games/minis/rpgs. The biggest selling game is Magic, but he can get that through the sports card distributor, who is a 5 miles drive away. This means he saves on shipping, and we can get them in 10 minutes instead of waiting 2-3 days. That means Alliance orders only happen once a month, so RPG books only come in once a month (less often if there's not much to order that month because you have to order $300+ wholesale price from Alliance for free shipping).
Which means on a regular basis RPG/Game stuff could be up to 3 weeks late just due to release dates and the distributor not having them early enough prior to the release date for the store to get them.
I guess that wasn't really a suggestion, but just food for thought ;)

We actually sell to a number of sports card distributors. Your FLGS may want to check and see if they carry Paizo products. And, if not, I'd love to have the name and contact info so I can get them to start.

I'd be thrilled to death if my stores had it a day or 2 after release. I know when I purchase software I get it the day it is out even if I do not pre-order.
How to solve this? Not sure, it may be the people who run the stores NOT wanting to carry product they feel might not sell. Then again they have 5 copies of each 4.0 book on their shelves and those books just sit there. When they get a a new pathfinder book its a matter of who can get to it first. And even then it's a week before they have it back again and by that time I could have gotten it from someplace else.
Software i.e games are not books. There is not the demand for them. But maybe you needs to be focusing on stores with marketing and keep them in the loop. Maybe reginal marketing reps for eac state or multi states. Keep the store in the loop and what stuff is releaseing on what day and mak sure they can get those products on release or the day after.
I for one in this economy am here to save as much as I can when I purchase something. Just because I buy it from Amazon or the store in my area does not mean I am not supporting Paizo. Anytime you buy a product of there you are supporting Paizo.
but then again I had a friend who lost his rights to buy from Paizo because someone hacked either PC or Paizo, and stole the PDF's uplaoded them and Paizo would not even try to communicate with him to try and resolve the issue. So he gave up and stopped bying product. It could

I get the savings, I would question your 1 week delay. I'm going to be enjoying the PDF on Wednesday or Thursday the 11th. There is a fair chance I'll be fondling the hardcover on the 14th or the 16th. In my experience Amazon doesn't even start shipping Paizo books for a week after the 'official' release date. Free two day shipping is a questionable benefit when they don't have the product to ship out.
I've done it both ways and for me, the savings isn't worth the wait while all my chums are enjoying it. All that said, it's entirely possible Amazon's turnaround on Paizo stuff is much better now, it's been a few books since last messed with it.

It's not just Paizo books. Amazon is bad about hitting release dates for gaming products and video games. I had to wait so long for my original 4E release order that I ended up buying the books from a local store after all. And I've seen LOTS of friends get bit by PS3/360 release delays.

Especially if you're a subscriber and the savings, if any (for me Amazon would be more expensive) is negligible. If delaneyalysa were a subscriber of just the core rulebook line, the math would be 15% off $39.99 = $33.99 + $6.83 shipping = $40.82. Still more, but Amazon + PDF is only a $4.93 savings. If you subscribe to even two lines and combine shipments, the shipping gets amortized over the multiple items and the benefit of using Amazon rapidly diminishes - the shipping doesn't go up that much and it gets divided by the number of items. And don't forget - if your order is over $100, Paizo chips in the first $10 in shipping.
Of course, $100+ in gaming gear/month has my girlfriend giving me the hairy eyeball, but hey, some things are important. Personally, I could do without the $91+/month for Comcast :)

Considering that I buy 99% of the Paizo books I own through the big chains, this is news that makes me happy. I just wish that said chains would put more Paizo books actually on the store shelves for people to browse through. Heck, I started in on Paizo after an impulse buy of "Rise of the Runelords #5" and its article on Lamashtu.

I will note that if you're actually shipping through eBay's system, you're benefitting from eBay's incredibly high volume that allows them to negotiate discounted pricing for their customers. On your own, you won't be able to ship a book as heavy as Ultimate Magic any cheaper than we can (and don't forget that you need to factor in things like the cost of your shipping materials). (And you're not allowed to use Book Rate, since it contains advertisements "other than incidental announcements of books," which disqualifies it.)

I have seen this first hand. We have almost no bookstores in our town anymore because of it. We had a mall with two internal stores and about 5 major stores throughout the town. The ones in the mall closed shop and of those 5 major stores, I think we have 1 left*.

Have you tried pre-ordering? From the store that is. Tell them that there is a new book coming on this or that day and that you want it quickly, ask them if they could order it right away. If they keep a lookout for new releases and advertise them early enough, they might get enough pre-orders that they can order the stuff soon enough that they get their shipment right away.

Just confused. Should I have an e-mail or shouldn't I?

If you are really worried you might want to post in Customer Service forum or email them (customer.service@Paizo.com) and they will likely give you some thing more specific (on Monday when they get in).
I'm pretty sure the availability on the product page is a mistake.
Also check your junk mail folders

I don't really care about the physical book, I'm really curious when subscribers are going to get the pdf?
When your copy leaves the warehouse. From Mark's comment above, it sounds like the pallet with the books has turned up, but the warehouse didn't get any out. So they'll start shipping tomorrow and will probably take until about Thursday to get them out.
