They should find my commentary interesting as I answered No to the question if I currently play any version of D&D, but answered appropriately for the pathfinder related questions. I did note in their comments t hat they should have substituted D20 for D&D, as I do not consider Pathfinder a version of Dungeons and Dragons, but a closely related game.

There we go. Answered. Had to put "Really not sure" on the "Which version of D&D is your favourite?", since I can't decide between Pathfinder and AD&D 2e (my group prefers Pathfinder, though, so we no longer play AD&D).

For the purposes of the survey, I would say that the difference is insignificant (hence why they start with "Any version of it").
My group still says "Let's play D&D this Saturday", and we have been playing nothing but Pathfinder for almost 2 years.

That's you and your group. To me, Pathfinder has progressed enough from it's beginning and made enough new ideas that WOTC never would have thought of that we haven't used the term D&D for over a year now. Now it's "Are you running Pathfinder or LSJ?" at our house.

Fair enough. But I still think that it was rather evident that the survey was thinking of Pathfinder when they said "Any edition of D&D", so answering no while selecting Pathfinder in the other questions would simply skew the statistics.

I dont normaly take part in "surveys" but what the heck lol
My group is only playing "Pathfinder" atm, we play once a week and honestly have not even looked at another system since I brought the "beta" play test for pathfinder to the game table.
I am the "GM" of this group and honestly I really do prefer running the game then playing as a "PC".
I consider myself lucky to have had the same core group for 15 + years now.
I better get back to work now :)

Heh. I'm playing Pathfinder with the Classic racial rules, the AD&D multiclassing rules, and the 4e skill rules. I'd like to see your survey make sense of that.
What classical race rules?
Also hey it is great more people are seeing this survey...was just pointing it out is all.

Then let them be skewed. it's a lesson on how you frame your questions and context.

That's kind of funny, because we play Pathfinder but I have adapted the attack powers from 4e for the non-spellcaster classes and use hybrid Pathfinder / 4e monsters.

I found it rather surprising that OD&D was not listed as an option. That was especially irritating on question number 8 which asks what the first edition you played was. I also considered HackMaster 4th to be the same as AD&D 1st for the purposes of the poll but since I played both I suppose it doesn't really matter.
Do you have to be a member of the site to see poll results?

Currently I think that Pathfinder is basically an alternative version of Dungeons & Dragons. I probably wouldn't be playing it if it wasn't. What I mean by that is, I loved D&D 3.x, and that's why I love Pathfinder. Pathfinder hasn't changed enough mechanically for me to consider it a different game, and I don't consider the Pathfinder Campaign Setting and The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game to by synonymous, anymore than I consider Dungeons & Dragons to be synonymous to any specific campaign setting.
If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it's probably not at aardvark.
In fact, I'd actually have preferred that the Pathfinder folk go back towards the 3.0 standard that the designers (Monte Cook, and Skip Williams, and I think another fellow?) had made. There's little in the way of mechanical improvements from 3.0 to 3.5 (weapon sizes are more complicated, greater deficit in martial power vs caster power, etc), and some of the 3.5 standards that they brought into PF don't make sense from a logical point of view (the whole undead debacle that sprang up after 3.5 came out, that rages even to today).
However, I'm currently playing Pathfinder (but modifying it here and there to suit my group's purposes), but it's still D&D by a different name.

Pathfinder basically is D&D 3.55, so I don't really get the people going out of their way to claim "I don't play D&D, I play Pathfinder!"
Dungeons & Dragons is IP owned by WotC, Pathfinder by Paizo. One of these companies I fully support, the other I do not. So, why would I say that I play with an IP wholly owned by a company I do not support, taking credit away from the company I do support?
Therefore, "I don't play D&D, I play Pathfinder!"

Well we can quibble about the point version. Personally I tend to thing of it in terms of revisions. 3.5 would be 3e Revision 1, Pathfinder would be 3e Revision 2. Although I would almost throw in d20 Modern as Revision 1 to the d20 system as whole, then again it wasn't a big change to the system but you can see the trending for 3e to 3e 1st Revision there.
I digress... The point is to put some distance between Pathfinder and the 4e "Paladins" that still stalk EN World and other sites. By franchise it is not D&D... by sprit and fluff it is blood kin. It's like saying OSRIC is/isn't D&D. "I don't play D&D, I play the World of Warcraft RPG" you remember the one put out by Whitewolf. :p

What classical race rules?
I mean the race rules from Classic D&D or from the earlier BECMI sets. You didn't pick a race and a class; if you picked a normal class you were Human, and if you picked a non-Human race that was your class. The Gazetteer series expanded the options with things like Dwarf Clerics and Shadow Elf Shamans.
The way I've got it worked out, if you're not Human you automatically advance in your racial class, but you can still multiclass normally. (Per House Rules.) Dwarves are a full BAB class with defensive features, and they can take a "half class" for extra skills and trapfinding or for Inquisitor spellcasting. Elves are 3/4 BAB with Bard spellcasting and can take a half class for full BAB and weapon training in light blades and bows, or for full spellcasting. And so forth.
I'm still hammering out the details, but the idea is that every class has a couple "half class" options, like archetypes, and the standard NPC classes exist as "half class" options for any class.

Because it's not. Paizo does not own the D&D trademark, and more importantly, they're not the only successor to 3.5 out there.

Off the top of my head....

Arcana Evolved
Blue Rose
Call of Cthulhu d20
Conan RPG
Fantasy Craft
Gamma World (6E)
Trailblazer
Not d20 based, but instead based on previous editions of D&D:

When I speak, I do it to communicate with another person. Using "Pathfinder" is more accurate yet less likely to convey information. Yes, I can - and sometimes do - explain myself. Still, the information-density in "D&D" is very high. I don't need to explain that Nissan has nothing to do with how I game.

hey not only do I play pathfinder I play kenzer and companies hackmaster 4th edition, thier wotc supported material to challenge the original 3rd edition rules by combining the choicest bits from the former D&D editons, with a few cool things put in. its such a game that you have a hard time passing 5th level with no deaths under your belt!!!

The thing is surveys like this are practically dammed useless. They draw from a limited set of people who post to messageboards, an extremely skewed measure of the Pathfinder and D20 populations in general. I'm not sure what his purpose is unless it's a lazy man's attempt to put together a "survey" for some Master's paper, something I see a fair amount of on the WOW message boards.

Useless, perhaps, as evidence in some of scientific endeavor.
But as a pointless diversion, it's fine. I'd like to see the results. Incidentally, I am not hoping to see my results "win", either. I don't get all ideological about game editions, I think that is a really stupid thing to get worked up about.

Kthulhu wrote:Lamentations of the Flame Princess Weird Fantasy RPGJust on the basis of the name alone I have to ask for the details on this game.
Basically a retro-clone of B/X Basic D&D, akin to Labyrinth Lord. It does not include a bestiary, rather in includes rules for the Referee to create their own, unique monsters. However, being Basic D&D, it can use monsters from any of the retro-clones or retro editions with minimal conversion. The recently released Grindhouse Edition is chock full of old-school art, as well.

I'm also interested in the results. I forwarded the survey to all of my RPG-playing friends, not just the ones who read messageboards, and I encourage everyone here to do the same, so that the survey has a better dataset to draw conclusions from.
As for the D&D vs. Pathfinder thing, I usually tell people I play D&D, because almost everyone knows what that is. If they're interested in RPGs or are more on the geeky side, I'll explain that I actually play Pathfinder.

To be more concise, I understand why people would say "I play Pathfinder." I do not see why people would preface that with "I don't play D&D."

Maybe he's prefacing it that way because a good number of people consider PF to be "D&D 3.75"? Maybe he really wants to push the point that PF, while built on top of D&D 3.5, is a different game?
I dunno. :)

And I'm saying that Pathfinder doesn't even really constitute as "3.75," it is "3.55." It's really not a different game at all, at least not the game itself.
Yes yes I know people are going to talk about IPs and such. But the game as it is as a game is more or less 3.5 with a few changes.

D&D now is the trav...i mean system that is being printed by wotc.
Pathfinder is based ond D&D 3.5 that is now out of print and not current anymore.
Thus, when someone asks me if i play D&D my answer will be no. Always no. Because D&D is now 4th edition.
Patfhinder is pathfinder. And to be honest, it feels more like D&D then the actual D&D.

How are you doin the multiclassing with regards to humans since they dual classed? Also are you staggering experience tracks such as wizards go slow while rogues go fast?
Everyone is using the same multiclassing system. There is a single XP table that all characters use, but the number of classes you are progressing in simultaneously determines which column you use.
Any character can "dual class" by resetting their XP to zero and advancing according to their new XP column, but you can't abandon a class after taking it.
