my dm and I are trying tirelessy to make this weapon work for the magus! I don't see it as too difficult or not working for the magus as the wand wielder arcana works on staves and all double weapons can be used one-handed so if you wanted to to use a spell for spell combat just use the staff one-handed as the guy in the video did.
I'm thinking something like fusing a longsword with a quarterstaff with each end doing that damage. factor in the magical properties of each end separately (like always) and voila magical swordstaff . It's an expensive weapon but it works. I was also thinking of doing the jedi thing and requiring characters to make their own weapons with the blade end being any light or one-handed piercing or slashing weapon. Require 2 weapon fighting fea and I think you got it. any ideas would be greatly appreciated t

Just give the magus a spell storing glave which is essentialy a blade mounted on a staff. spell storing allows you to cast up to a third level targeting spell into it casting the spell as a free action after you damage an enemy with the glaive. It would not be a double weapon as hawke never really used the blunt end to physically hit an enemy.

Dark Archive

You might want to wait for the Archetypes in the book to come out. The problem with this build is that it would require that you never use Spell Combat since it can't be performed with a two handed weapon.

An archetype that focused on Spellstrike would be of great benefit to this kind of character.


you can totally use spell combat as all double weapons can be used one handed. Just use it one handed on the rounds you want to use that ability. I decided to use the swordstaff stats that @stroval posted on another thread 1d8 (piercing or slashing)/1d6 bludgeoning with a short sword version for dex builds doing 1d6/1d6. I will test this weapon monday and post how it worked. I'm also seeing if my dm will allow these weapons to count as a masterwork quarterstaff so when Itake the craft staff feat and use wand wielder for my weapon making me able to use my weapon 2 handed and use spell combat. I did enhancements for each end and obviously did spell storing on both ends as I think all magi should use spell storing weapons

You can't wield a quarterstaff in one hand, and you can't wield a dwarven urgrosh in one hand, etc.

Yeah, that applies to things like giants picking up human-sized quarterstaves.

It is not permission to wield a quarterstaff in one hand, if you are not otherwise able to do so.

Funny, it seems exactly like permission to me. I guess we need an FAQ on it then.


Also, it seems that James Jacobs agrees with the "usable in one hand" interpretation.

A creature cannot wield a size-appropriate double weapon with one hand. By RAW, all double weapons are two-handed weapons, and it is impossible to wield a size appropriate two-handed weapon with one hand.

I believe the rule applies to exceptions established by the Inappropriately Sized Weapons section. A Medium creature can wield a Small Two-Handed Weapon as though it were a One-Handed Weapon. If that last rule was not there, then it would mean that a character doing this could get two attacks with just one hand, even at Level 1.

For example, if my Half-Orc were to use a Small Orc Double Axe, he would be able to use both ends of the weapon, giving him a 1d6+Str and 1d6+.5Str attack, with a -2 penalty to both attacks. Since this totally conflicts with the TWF rules of Double weapons, the last rule is there to ensure that this can't happen.

I don't think he does, actually.

Someone mentioned it, he said, "I didn't remember that rule," and nothing more was said [by him].

He certainly didn't validate the rule, and he hasn't come back to argue about it.

Especially given that the rule is the same as that in 3.5, and is just missing the explanatory note "(such as a human wielding a Small two-bladed sword)".


I think that until we a get solid explicit statement as to the function of double weapons, we are at an impasse. I am not convinced I cannot use one end in one hand, but there are other who do not agree and the rules seem to support both sides due to vagueness. Until we get an FAQ or Errata on this, I'm leaving it to the GM.
