Hey folks,
As you may know, the gunslinger playtest got an update today (you can download the free pdf here). We'll be updating the Additional Resources list to reflect these changes, but will be holding off doing so until I can get the content from the currently-shipping Inner Sea World Guide added as well, which might take a day or so.
For all of you currently playing gunslingers, here's what the Additional Resources page will say when we make the change.
As of 1/24/11, the Gunslinger class and the Ninja and Samurai alternate classes are legal for play. Please note that we reserve the right to change the classes at any time during the playtest (defined for Pathfinder Society Organized Play as any time between 1/24/11 and the release of the final book) and that you must update your character to current rules if/when the rules are updated (as with the release of the revised Gunslinger class on 3/7/11). You must also keep a close eye on the Ultimate Combat playtest messageboards to be aware of changes and you must bring a printed copy of the playtest with you to any session where you play your character.
The following changes to the playtest document apply to all Pathfinder Society Organized Play characters:
- A gunslinger’s starting weapon may be resold for 22 gp (the average of 4d10).
- The Daring Act optional rule is not used in Pathfinder Society Organized Play.
- The Amateur Gunslinger feat is NOT legal for play.
- Only gunslingers may take the Gunsmithing feat, with the following changes: crafting firearms is not allowed, and instead of crafting ammunition, they are considered to purchase mundane bullets and paper cartridges at 10% of its normal price. In order to gain the benefit of this feat, a gunslinger must purchase a gunsmith’s kit. Ammunition gained in such a way can only be resold for half its discounted price.
- Only gunslingers may purchase guns in Pathfinder Society Organized Play, and only early firearms are permitted in the campaingn, as advanced firearms do not exist in Golarion.
- A samurai may only choose from the listed animals for his mount.
- All samurais belonging to the Ronin order treat the three tenets of the Pathfinder Society (explore, report, and cooperate) as their edicts as outlined in Seekers of Secrets.

Wait... but revolvers, rifles and scatterguns (shotguns) do exist in Golarion, at least in the 1st edition of the Campaign Setting book. They are right there on page 212.
Even in the Gunslinger playtest sidebar it says:
The world of
Golarion uses the rules for emerging guns, which are also the
default category of gun rarity detailed in this document.
and then under "emergent guns" it says:
Advanced firearms may exist, but only as rare and wondrous items.
Which to me sounds a lot like most of the magic items buried all over the landscape.
It is a bit disappointing to hear this. I'm still absorbing the new playtest document, but it isn't convincing me that the class can really hold its own yet. It needs something like revolvers to be viable, even with the changes, and even then the misfire rules are still going to be really problematic.
The playtest is really going to hinge on the revolver getting playtested robustly and removing it from PFS is going to cut down on a lot of data.
Right now, if a Gunslinger in PFS is very miserly then they might be able to afford a Pepperbox around 3rd or 4th level (assuming you have the PA to buy it), and then they just have a weapon which statistically will misfire once every two combat encounters.

True, it does say "may" but since the guns were already established in Golarion canon, it just conveniently fits within the emergent model.
I was surprised at the price for the revolver. The pricing model for the advanced guns doesn't really scale with how the sidebar works.

And that canon has been revised with the new Inner Sea World Guide. Alkenstar and guns are now much younger than originally written in the 3.5 Campaign Setting. I have not seen the actual book yet, but from what James has posted in other threads, instead of thousands of years now it is maybe two or three hundred years that Alkenstar and firearms have been around. So using the same timeline for gun development from the real world, as a lot of Golarion is based on the real world, the most advanced gun designs in Golarion should be equivalent to late 1600's or early 1700's Earth.

late 1600's and 1700's would equate hto Wheellocks and Flintlocks, and to a lesser extent Matchlocks, whic fit perfectly into my vision of what this fantasy world with both horror and steampunk overtones should have.

How much does a gunsmith's kit weigh? I see the price (15g) but nothing about weight.

Questiong For PFS play.. are
Paper Cartridge:
This simple mix of black powder and either pellets or a bullet increases the misfire value by 1. Cost: 12 gp. Available for play? Do you get a discount on them, or is it full price?
(not PFS questions, but related)
Can these be used with a standard Pistol, does the reduction in loading time stack w/ the rapid reload feat?

The following email just went out to all PFS members:
Changes have been made to the Additional Resources document for Pathfinder Society Organized Play in the following manner:
- Pathfinder Society legal material has been added from Pathfinder Adventure Path #43: The Haunting of Harrowstone and Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea World Guide.
- The Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting is no longer a legal source for new material. Gear, feats, or prestige classes already selected by existing characters are grandfathered into play, but any material updated in the Inner Sea World Guide must be converted in all cases.
- The 15-level Hellknight prestige class from Pathfinder Adventure Path #27: What Lies in Dust is no longer legal for play. Any PCs of this PrC must convert Hellknight levels to the newly sanctioned 10-level version in the Inner Sea World Guide.
- Pathfinder Society-specific rules for firearms and gunslingers have been expanded, reflecting changes to the rules in the most recent playtest document.
Players may find the complete listing of Pathfinder Society Organized Play additional resources at http://paizo.com/pathfinderSociety/resources, where they may also download a pdf version of the material contained therein.

So... the "grandfathered" Feats... do we still need to haul this book around then or are the ones not "marked with an asterisk" in the Inner Sea Guide? I ask because my character has Beserker's Cry. Did this disappear from the Campaign Setting or is it just unchanged?
I'm assuming the changes take effect as soon as the book is released to the general public... not just for the subscribers.

Hi I was wondering if gunslingers are still able to use the 'special' option of the gunsmithing feat to upgrade their starting gun to masterwork quality? Thought I'd ask as I wasn't totally clear if you were counting this as 'crafting' or not.

Huh. I didn't get any email--wondering why?

I actually find this a little confusing as according the Paizo site here regarding the Inner Sea World Guide:
PDF available Mar 23
And I don't expect the hard copy to show up at my FLGS any time soon. How can we be expected as GM's and players to properly adjudicate many of these changes now until the the actual product is released?

Also just an observation, but does the cost break on ammo extend to blackpowder as well? I'm hoping that this was just an accidental omission as otherwise your basic ammo is still going to be very expensive in PFS (barring just using paper cartridges).

I use the pdfs and not the hardcopies for most books, so I'm glad I don't have a character overly affected by this change, or I'd be really upset. I think maybe the effective date should be the pdf release date and not the hardcopy release date.teribithia9 |
I also noticed the wording was changed from what Mark posted above about what guns are available and wonder if I could get a little clarification on something? Instead of saying "only early firearms are permitted in the campaign, as advanced firearms do not exist in Golarion." the update from today says "only muskets, pepperboxes, and pistols are permitted in the campaign, as
advanced firearms do not exist in Golarion."
My question is, does "only muskets, pepperboxes, and pistols are permitted in the campaign" refer to the specific weapon pistol, the specific weapon musket, and the specific weapon pepperbox, or are pepperboxes and all early firearms with the word pistol and musket in their names allowed? For example, are the dragon pistol, coat pistol and axe musket legal for PFS? (They are types of pistols and muskets, but not the specific weapon called "pistol" or the specific weapon called "musket".) Thanks!

I have a subscription and while my HC hasn't arrived yet, I already have the pdf. My FLGS usually receives his printed material the week after I receive mine in the mail.

Yes, I have a subscription to the companion books and modules and receive pdfs in advance for those, but not everyone does. And, as with me, not everyone who has subscriptions can afford to have them for all products. The fact remains if you're just trying to buy the pdf without a subscription, it's not available till March 23rd. I think it really would be more equitable to hold off making the old documentation illegal for play until both the hardcopy and pdf release dates were past, to accomodate people who use the pdfs. That's all I'm saying.

The date by which a player must update his PC from Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting content to Inner Sea World Guide is the street date of the Inner Sea World Guide (March 23) when the book is assumed to be available in all retail stores and will definitely be available in pdf format on paizo.com. If you have access to the book prior to then, you must update any affected rules to the current version immediately.
The purchasing of equipment and choosing of feats or entry into a PrC from the Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting is no longer legal as of yesterday. There remains a two week window between which you can no longer add new content from that source and by which all existing material from it must be converted.

I obviously misunderstood, then. That seems completely fair.

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, but what exactly must be updated?
Obviously I have to play with the new rules from now on, but what (if anything) gets grandfathered in?
For instance, a musket gunslinger no longer gets free ammo and powder. Should I change old chronicle sheets and buy them during my first adventure?
If not, do the remaining "free" materials go poof and disappear from my character before his next adventure or do I get to keep them as well?

Mark clarified this a little more here.
Basically the extra gun for a pistol gun slinger goes, but the ammo stayed.
