Golarion Google Map?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

I have already pre-ordered the Inner Sea Map Folio (from Amazon, sorry Paizo but even with shipping it still was only $17 and change), but I was wondering if anybody had wind of, or had the technical know-how to create an interactive Google map of Golarion?

For frame of reference I'm thinking of a map like this one, which is fan created content for the old PC RPG Oblivion.

Anybody know of a site that already has this? Or if not I'd like to challenge a computer savvy fan to create one. I know I'd use the heck out of it, since I run a laptop heavy game.

So you know, If it is Public, you would have to make your own maps.

Not sure I'm catching your drift? Paizo has a full map of Golarion as part of a Community Use package: here. I just don't have the computer know how to make that into an interactive map like the one in the link in my original post. I'm thinking an interactive Google map like the one I linked, would be a great addition to say the Pathfinder Wiki. In which case, it's not copyright infringement, as long as you use the language from the community use rules on the website. I was just wondering if anything like that already existed. If not, as I said, I'd love to see somebody put in the tech work to create one.

For various legal reasons beyond my ken, this has been done before and Paizo requested (quite politely, I gather) that the user in question take it offline. That thread is here.

Which was before a full map was posted on the Community use page.

IIRC, it was asked to be taken down because it used maps pulled from PDF versions of our material (some of which was not included in the Community Use Policy). (It's been a while, so my memory is fuzzy).

Using the Community Use Policy, creating something that lets you scroll and zoom around the map in the Community Use Package would be fine. (However, anybody thinking about it might want to wait on that, as we'll be updating the map in that package shortly after the new Inner Sea World Guide is released.)

The problem with the other project was that it linked to maps that *aren't* available under the CUP.

Thanks to all who replied (especially Paizo staff). I guess I'll wait until the community use maps are updated and send out another general call to the fans for someone tech savvy to put something together. Thanks again.

Hmm... if we add in annotations or points (like 'x happened here' or cities and towns that might be located on the world map via reference to other sources), or links from a city on the CUP map to a corresponding PathfinderWiki entry, do either of those run afoul of the CUP? (I'm not sure exactly how to read 'descriptively reference')

I'd have to guess that anything you added as an entry on the map would be fine. It's the idea that if you zoom in on the map, and it switches to a different image, that is not CU, that you run into trouble. Otherwise I'm pretty sure you can link cities, towns, etc. to wiki entries with no problem at all. Which is exactly what I would love to see.

That Oblivion map rocked! I love Google Earth and a "Google Golarion" would be awesome. I think it would be great for regional maps of Golarion so GMs can add in locations for their campaign, note where the party got to at the end of last session, etc.

We'll, the Google Maps API is designed with latitude & longitude (and a curved earth) in mind, so a flat map like the one in the CUP material would take a little doing, but it's certainly not impossible. If you search this forum for 'projection map', I think, you might find someone has already done part of the work required there.

Saw that, thanks for the pointer. Problem is, that work will have to be redone because, as Vic pointed out, Paizo is going to re-release the community use maps after the Inner Sea Folio starts distribution.

Actually, after the full Inner Sea World Guide is released, not just the folio (which has already started going out).

The software behind Google Earth (plus Mars and Moon) is open source so it would certainly be possible to do a Golarion version. It would however require Paizo to establish a canon for areas of the world they haven't expanded upon much as of yet. So I think a 2D interactive map of the Inner Sea region is all that could be achieved with the information currently available. Perhaps expanding into Tian Xia when Jade Regent is released.

Map fans may also want to check out Traveller map.

Well, not *exactly*... you could always do a 'here there be dragons' kind of thing, along with some vaguely misshappen continental guesswork, for the non-Inner Sea areas.

Getting all the imagery established for Google Maps is kind of a chore, though.

I'm bumping this since the community use maps have been re-released. I'd love for somebody with a mind for programming to tackle this project. Here is a link to the originally linked Oblivion Map creator's design notes. Don't know if that helps or not. Just wondering if any tech savvy Pathfinder fans might be able to make a Golarion Inner Sea Google Map a possibility?

Holding out for a label-less Golarion map; while this can be extracted from the Inner Sea World Guide, CUP seems to imply you can't edit the labels away, and I'd like to be able to zoom in to place finer details such as small cities, villages, etc. With the labels already in place it'll look pretty ugly at higher zoom levels.

Not to seem ungrateful to the Paizo folks who got that placed into the CUP; I'm very happy you did so, just not so well suited to this one specific purpose.

What program was used to make this? It easy for someone with little to no programming knowledge?

So again, what program was used to make it?

And why is the program no longer around? Did it get taken down due to a violation?

It's possible that the website is one of the ones affected by the GoDaddy outage—it was working last week that I saw. :)

It looks like the map was made using javascript and a template
