As someone who has seen Captain Yesterday's handiwork, I can say yes, hard work does build character.
However, after talking to Vany about his first jobs, I remain concerned about people with that kind of mindset being exploited. That said, I am sure Captain Yesterday can sense a bad deal and walk away.

Building a character shouldn't be hard work. Choose a race, pick a class, assign some stats, place skills, grab a feat, purchase some gear. Easy as cake. Piece of pie. Bobbie's your aunt.

Well, first you're going to want to whittle your own pencil, then you gotta carve your dice out of stone, and then there's stripping the bark off the birch trees in the front yard so you can make the paper.

Wahoo! We have a house!
Just to rent for the time being; we can't proceed with buying until Whingey Wizzard is working, but at least our rental application has been approved, and we're going to overnight them our deposit first thing tomorrow. (Why they won't accept wire transfer is beyond me.)
My new commute will be LESS THAN TEN MINUTES, entirely on residential streets. It's three miles from the new school.
Oh, and I discovered there's a Jamaican restaurant less than five miles away that makes curry goat and festival (corn fritters).
And it's 12.5 miles away from the Polish deli where they sell the good sausage and make paczki on weekends.
Things are looking up!

Any commute under 6 miles is better by bicycle.
Especially in hot weather.
(In Davis it was 4 miles in, and once the weather was over 105 degrees I absolutely refused to get in a car because they were just too stupid hot, and wouldn't have enough time to cool down during the drive.)

This man speaks lies.
(Bias confession: I move my car around each day at lunch so that it's parked in a shady location all day, crack the windows if it's not scheduled to rain, and am not averse to letting the car sit and cool for a few minutes before departing, no matter how short the trip. Also my disdain for bicycles on car-dominated streets is well known.)

Local con seems to be going well, if not smoothly. We were getting 2-3 tables a slot yesterday, helped by walk-ins given we were literally in the central mustering room for the entire event. Thankfully, once muster was over we were mostly left to our own devices. (Other than my VL getting questions about the con itself instead of just PFS.)

No way in hell am I biking in Arizona.
Also, my commute is like 20 miles, so I am glad to have the new car, despite the additional debt.
