Real quick question - I've had a run-in with [this guy] recently... is he always this worked up or did I just catch him on a bad day? It certainly wasn't my intent to make him angry, but it looks like I did.
Ah well.
Some of us have had issues with him being a jerk in the past. I am enjoying our conversation, though, Nathan, even though we disagree. I hope I am not being unpleasant. :)

I'm starting to realize why this decision process is so hard for me...
For too long, I've resisted doing anything outside my routines. I work from 8:30 to 5, I sing in a choir on Wednesdays, every other Friday I go to game night (although it's on hiatus now). And that's just the way it's been. Whatever other opportunities are out there, I've avoided, because it's easier to just keep doing what I'm doing. I've given up on so many other things I like doing, or could be doing.
Is grad school better than my job? Yes. But if anything, all the other changes I want to make in my life would be harder, not easier. I'd be living in the suburbs, spending over 2 hours a day on trains, getting home tired and unmotivated, and not really seeing any people besides my partner and the people in my department.
Picking up and moving elsewhere means evaluating my priorities, pursuing new opportunities, trying to meet as many different people as I can, leveraging skills that I've let atrophy. It means taking an active instead of a passive role. It's frankly terrifying, but part of me knows that it's what I have to do.

Jess;
Of course not, you're the picture of pleasant conversation.
I wasn't looking to bad mouth anyone, I was just a bit surprised at his vehemency, and I was wondering if it was me or general disposition (you've all been around a bit so I figured this would be the best place to ask).
I'll edit the post now.

Dude, you're like the people that thought the Peter Jackson movies were better than Tolkien's novels. There's no hope!
Actually, I liked the books (Only Frank's books, to be clear), the movie, and the mini-series, all three! Marinade in them and enjoy. But the books are clearly the best! But yeah, there's lots of David Lynch's Dune hatred out there.

Besides, Jeremy -- Thanks to Episode VI, every sci-fi convention has this.
Umm I have a husband, my appreciation of such a costume would be limited ;)

Treppa, sorry I had to run to school earlier. I'm back now, but I need to get together the Fey Mound of the Foul Faeries of Felldom or whatever this faery dungeon crawl is going to be the adventure for the nephews this weekend. They made their characters on St Patrick's Day, and now will send them in. They hired a bunch of meatshields, so I can have folks die with impunity. Yeah!

Nope I claim total ignorance of Dune. I haven`t read the books, seen the movie or miniseries.

So I`m continuing to write my adventure about the Nidalese prison fortress. After rereading it I realize I`m a sick individual, I mean the courtyard has a Kyton spider with chains crisscrossing it, the prison itself has quite a few kyton tortures, and there`s a vampire cleric of Zon-Kuthon (with some pretty horrific body modifications) as the prison warden. You guys think it`ll be to much to give the Kytons a few rogue levels >:)

Justin Franklin wrote:In all honesty the original trilogy isn't that much better (if at all) than the prequel trilogy.Ok, I was following along ok, minding my own business, but then this.
Seriously?
Episode One is up there as one of the worst movies ever made.
Was Darth Maul "bad"? It was implied that he was -- but what did he do that was actually evil? Darth Vader in the first ten minutes of Episode IV established himself as "bad". Darth Maul looked cool fighting Jedi. That was it. (And don't get me started on Mr. Rabbit Ears...) Then you have the weak love scenes in the field (seeing Anakin riding those cow things was bad -- seeing it on I-Max was painful). As well as plot holes that you could drive a star destroyer through. Follow it up with the third one where Anakin gets even more whiny than previously thought possible (at least we know that Luke gets it honestly). And a fall to the dark side that still doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
The prequel trilogy for the most part were beautiful films that had little to no substance. Eye candy? Sure. As good as the original trilogy? Not even close.
Well if you compare Episode 1 to Episode 6 how much difference is their really? Empire really does stand out as the exception in the series (although the last half of 3 to me was very cool, up until the No.) I wonder what difference the fact that we knew how it was going to end made a difference.
3 ends with Anakin becoming Darth Vader, Palpatine becoming Emperor, Padme dead, almost all of the Jedi dead. But there is no suspense like at the end of 5.
Either way they all have crappy dialogue and wooden acting.:)

Heh, this reminds me very much of going to Japan. I was just finishing school and realized I was scared to do anything different - terrified of changing my routine. I remember the reason I kinda dropped everything for two years in Japan was I decided I coudln't go through life like that, and I decided to jump into the deep end of the pool.
Japan turned out to be bad for my career path, but it was so good for me personally! I'm glad I did do it, because while I'm still sometimes nervous about changing my routine...I know I can do it, and do it successfully. :)

*shudder*
That brings back bad memories of the dungeon that darn near killed our eleventh level party once...or was it thirteenth level, you know I think it was. Anyhoo...I think the answer to that question depends on the level of the adventure and just how dead you want the party. :)

I agree with Mairkurion on that one. Just stick to the original author.
I personally really, really enjoyed the mini-series.

Seriously. Admittedly, I was 16 when I saw it. :)
The book bored me to tears, so I never got past the first 50 pages, but I know people who read the books reviled the movie.
I've read the books, seen the first movie, and the Sci-Fi version. I loved all three. THAT"S RIGHT!!! I. LOVED. ALL. THREE!!!!

Now, further regarding Frank Herbert & Dune:
I will say, I've read almost all of the Dune books, even the ones written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson (up to Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune). I, of course, prefer Frank's original books, even though they got a bit weird towards the end. But I was at least able to enjoy the Brian and Kevin books.
Still, for my money, Frank was da bomb! One of the best sci-fi writers ever to exist, in my humble opinion. I've read plenty of his other books:
The WorShip novels
The ConSentient novels
The Dragon in the Sea
The Green Brain
The Eyes of Heisenberg
The Santaroga Barrier
Hellstrom's Hive
The White Plague.
My favorite non-Dune books are Destination:Void, Whipping Star, and The Dosadi Experiment.

I wish you luck man, if all else fails, you can move to the UK with me and my husband and we can relax and be complete Europhiles :P I mean I can seriously take a weekend go to Paris and see the Louvre. I hear the Mona Lisa is a lot smaller than seen on film.

I think the other difficult piece would be the feeling that I am walking away from an opportunity at the school. But maybe that's what you have to do sometimes.

I would love to go to the UK sometime. (It's high on our list, and that means something, because we pretty much save all of our disposable income for travel. As some of you may have noticed.)
Maybe by partner and I could send off to Italy again. We could meet up in France - after all, it's half way in between. (Ok, now I'm just being fanciful.)

Likely, the hubby has a few applications in Exeter and Liverpool, if we're not in the UK we'll be in Scandinavia by the looks of things right now. Also we have our huge trip planned for 2012, the long train ride from Glasgow to London, to Paris, to Berlin, to Vienna, to St. Petersburg, to Moscow, down through Mongolia, into China ending in Beijing. We'll be stopping plenty of places in between but those are the major stops.
