We're having a Sci-Fi intervention on Jeremy's behalf. Next thing ya know, the dude cops to hating Dune. This.Ends.Here!

Dune, the book? (bleh)

Dune, the movie? (I loved it. People who read and liked Dune hated it)

Dune, the Sci-Fi miniseries? (Never saw it)

The miniseries was even better than the movie. And I liked the movie.

I can't make it through the first chapter of the book without falling asleep.

Here's what I've gotten so far..

Star Ocean EX
Paranoia Agent
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Zeta Gundam- a New Translation(ALL HAIL TRUE GUNDAM)
Black Lagoon Season One
Gatchaman OVA
Macross- Love, Do you Remember(ALL HAIL MACROSS!!!)

And I have GOT to find Nyan-koi!!!!

I really like the new release of Neong Genesis Evangelion. How's Black Lagoon?

well, considering that Dutch and i seem to have been separated at birth, I am a bit biased, but I have to say it is a hilarious action adventure.

Oh, yeah, regarding that name. We kinda treat it like most people treated Voldemort's name in the Harry Potter franchise.

And as far as Star Wars goes, I like it because it's fun not because it's high art. Most movies that are 'great cinema' bore me silly or leave me feeling frustrated at having watched them. I watch movies to enjoy a story not to be depressed.

I read the book and have loved all the movies to date, but never understood how anyone who hadn't already read the book could possibly follow what was happening in the first movie. It seemed very much an insider's movie, not for the general public.

The miniseries stands alone well. It's one of the few things we have on DVD.

I followed Dune fine, but I think I was more in the mindset of watching a David Lynch movie, rather than an adaptation of the book (since I hadn't read it at all before the movie). If you've watched any other David Lynch movies or the first season of Twin Peaks, you know you have to pay close attention to all the movie's cues.

I'd never seen a David Lynch movie before Dune or Twin Peaks and the book was too boring to read. :/

But I never had any trouble at all following the movie. I've never understood why it was supposed to be confusing. The miniseries did give a lot more detail which is why I liked it more, but the original movie made perfect sense.

I am not quite sure what the second season is really - I have heard everything from a re-telling of the first season to it being a mishmash of new episodes mixed in with way too many flashbacks from the old. What is it exactly?

I guess after seeing and hearing all these excited fans I expected some super awesome film. But instead I got a whiny, b*@#$y main character which doesn`t surprise me that the actor went on to do next to nothing afterwards. I saw predictable dialogue, and I saw horrible acting. The effects were good for their time, the story other than being a bit predictable was still ok. I guess I went into it expecting Lord of the Rings instead I got Spaceballs. But I guess I missed the experience of seeing it as a kid when my expectations would have been much lower, and the magic factor would have been much higher.

That actor went on to play the quintessential Joker...in an animated series, sure, but still.

In all honesty the original trilogy isn't that much better (if at all) than the prequel trilogy.

Ok, I was following along ok, minding my own business, but then this.

Seriously?

Episode One is up there as one of the worst movies ever made.

Was Darth Maul "bad"? It was implied that he was -- but what did he do that was actually evil? Darth Vader in the first ten minutes of Episode IV established himself as "bad". Darth Maul looked cool fighting Jedi. That was it. (And don't get me started on Mr. Rabbit Ears...) Then you have the weak love scenes in the field (seeing Anakin riding those cow things was bad -- seeing it on I-Max was painful). As well as plot holes that you could drive a star destroyer through. Follow it up with the third one where Anakin gets even more whiny than previously thought possible (at least we know that Luke gets it honestly). And a fall to the dark side that still doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

The prequel trilogy for the most part were beautiful films that had little to no substance. Eye candy? Sure. As good as the original trilogy? Not even close.

I read the book. I read it around the same time I read the first Wheel of Time book. It was interesting to compare the differences. My issue was that Dune characters weren't very well described. I had a really hard time figuring out who was who. Compared to Wheel of Time where every blade of grass seemed to be described in painstaking detail.

If it makes anyone feel better I do wish I had seen it as a kid, if I had I probably would have loved it for pure nostalgia reasons. But I`ve become such a movie snob in my ripe old age of 27.

I get what you're saying. I think that timing had a lot to do with it. There really wasn't much in the way of good science fiction on screen before the first Star Wars came out -- or quite a bit afterward. So you had that going -- so the world was waiting for another good science fiction film to come out and they announced ESB. AND THE BAD GUYS WON! How many movies before that were there where the bad guys won?

But then George Lucas got hit a little hard in the head with a teddy bear and it was all over. ;-)
