captain yesterday wrote:No idea what any of that is, but on an unrelated note we're getting a few inches of snow tonight so I get to go out on a snow run. Should be fun!Turns out I was right! Both my guys came in drunk and surly. Not so much fun for them but a whole lot of fun for me.
I shouldn't snicker as hard as I am about that...but then again, no ones perfect...

I'm sure you're wondering what's so fun about working with a couple of drunk and surly people.
Well, I already know I can do my list easily by myself and I don't drink much so when people are stupid and get drunk before work g**#+~n right I'm going to give them grief.
I also didn't let them drive a truck.

At game tonight, the rogue was trying to commit a bit of arson (for good reason). She snuck up on her target with great skill, took aim with her alchemist's fire, and threw. All she had to do was not roll a 1. So, of course, she rolled a 1. We all started laughing, while I was trying to figure out what happened. So I said "You throw the flask, and you can just feel it. It's good. It's sooooo good. You know in your soul that it is going to land exactly where you want it to. And then, from out of nowhere, an owl swoops in and takes the hit. Like Randy Johnson hitting that bird, but with fire. The people partying around are surprised by the sudden burst of flame in the air, and a few of them catch some splash damage." It took a while for us to recover from that. Later, they found themselves in a sewer. Some of them were trying to get help from some sewer rats-even though none of them had any way to actually do it-while the Paladin wanted to look for something else. He rolled a 1 on his Perception, so I said "You start looking around, but are distracted by seeing an owl swoop down and snag a rat down the tunnel". A bit later they are talking to some guards who ask what they saw down there. The Paladin says that he saw an owl eat a rat. The guard (me) replies "Sewer-owls are a myth. Parents tell their kids about them in order to stop them from flushing their pet owls down the toilet when they get tired of them."

So now that WW is working from home and we can actually afford a pet, we're taking about getting on the list with the local Schnauzer rescue.
I had Schnauzers when I was a kid, they're sweet dogs, and they don't shed.
But (going with my family's naming trend for the breed, i.e. Schatzie, Schnapps) WW has decided he wants to name the poor beast Schnitzengruben.

It's really the only name possible. That or Stollen roll.

I'm of a mind to switch tracks and call it Baskerville instead (as in the hound of the...) because naming a small dog after a great fearsome hound that can kill a man is funny to me. Also, Schnauzers will give a great, wailing howl on provocation (such as when they hear a siren close by).
But (a) we aren't even on the list yet, because we still have to convince Grandma, who is a Cat Person, and doesn't believe in indoor pets, and (b) no matter what the dog ends up being named, WW will probably still call it Schnitzengruben.

Went to see my hairdresser for the first time since last May, because money, and she's also been my mother-in-law's hairdresser for over a decade (she was a childhood friend of my sister-in-law).
You know all that passive-aggressive crap Miz Daisy gives me about my weight and thanking G-d she's always managed to keep her figure, unlike her mother? Yeah, turns out she does the same thing with Pamela. "You know, you're really letting yourself go, dear."
It's one thing that she does it to me, but this pisses me off.
So I told WW. We'll see what happens.

Since I took the post, we've had seven crewmembers move to other positions or out of the company entirely. We've gotten four people to refill those jobs, and one of those four is transitioning to a new spot next week. Net Roster Loss: -3 (-4)
In that same timeframe, our "leadership team" originally numbered five (out of an optimal seven). We lost one of those five, and then had two new members join the team. And now both of those two new leaders have moved to other positions in the company. Obligatory Addendum: since we're so short-handed, my training is as yet horribly incomplete. Net Leadership Deficit: -3
And as a final piece of this inglorious snarl of staffing issues, the manager that hired me moved to another posting just over three months ago. He was replaced three weeks ago, and the new manager lasted SIX. DAYS. We haven't heard anything from him or about him (that is reliable, anyway) in almost two weeks. Current Management Staffing: -1
Cumulative Personnel Shortfall: -7 (-8)
And so it is that into this heady mix of nowhere near enough people to do the job we're assigned, last week two of our four team leaders went on vacation . . . . Leaving me (the newbie) and the other leader (the old hand) to cover the demands of a seven-person portion of the operation.
Our covering manager asked me on Monday night what I thought our plan of attack should be. I gave him a clear and simple answer, and he implemented exactly NOT. THAT.
Monday was a disaster, simply put, but it was to be expected since: a) I had to serve a function with which I have (now had) insufficient experience *compounded* by a recent radical shift in our operational specifications [essentially, 30% more effort to accomplish the same amount of work as usual], and b) two critical members of our team called out from work that night, on top of our scheduled vacationers. And yet, we got through it.
Tuesday - Thursday went off without a hitch. I haven't hustled that much for three consecutive ten-hour shifts in a long time.
Last night had an inauspicious beginning, but I was able to near single-handedly salvage a poor opening. And then I learned that a critical crewmember had called out again (one of the same two from Monday). Our covering manager juggled his personnel a bit to cover that lack. And then the bottom dropped out, metaphorically. Friday is supposed to be our easiest night of the week, but our workload was abnormally high. I haven't been able to look at the hard numbers, but my instincts tell me that we had around a 20% increase in workload. And just as the time crunch began to truly kick in, that increased workload almost totally derailed our operation, and I had to find a brand new level of personal performance.
We beat last night's deadline by 7 minutes. I know that I'm being quite non-specific about the particulars, but as I've alluded at least once before, my industry is governed by GMT -- seconds count, and in the thousands upon thousands of dollars, just for my specific operation. We pulled off nothing short of a near-miracle.
Props to my peer leader, our covering manager, and a crew that knows how to dig deep when the pressure hits. Everyone did an amazing job last night.
And at the end of it all, the 'old hand' team leader shook my hand and told me that I did a good job this week. High praise, indeed.
I gained enough XP this week to gain a level and put me at least halfway to the next. Feels pretty good. :)

I've been lurking and reading as I've been able over the last few weeks. Always glad to read each of you, FaWtLies.

Had a very interesting dream last night.
I dreamt I went to visit Vanykrye at his house. I kind of just turned a corner and there his house was. I went to knock on the door, and as he opened it a cat would run out into the street. Vany, his beard in a very interesting and perfectly coiffed fashion, would ask me to get his cat, and I would go out, get the cat and bring it back to him. But every time he opened the door, another cat would get out, and Vany would repeat his request. He would always speak in the same voice, the cats were always different, and on rare occasion I would see his wife, who would wave at me, but not really say much of anything. Not sure how many cats I saved, but it had to be five or six or so.

No glorious queen either. Just a bunch of petty kings.
Funny enough, I'm from East Anglia.

I don't think that I manage to reach your region before the end of the free play (which happens tomorrow).
For now I am going to sleep anyway.
