And yes, I'm posting a ton today because:
(1) I've finished all my assigned work.
(2) The division we provide training to rejected all of our update plans in a blanket statement that boiled down to, "Never do anything new, just keep doing what you've always done forever." It was yet another contributing factor to my manager's departure.
(3) My manager is quitting and is out today, so I'm in charge.
(4) I'll be putting out my resume for a new job over the weekend.
(5) It's the Friday before a 3-day weekend.
(6) I'm nekkid.

The motivation to work somehow just isn't there.

And I loved meeting with my accountant over lunch. "Aren't you worried going back into the job market? It's got to be pretty stressful, right?"
"Er, my VP already said that she was willing to try to match any offer I got because she didn't want to lose me. So I'm not exactly 'desperately searching' for a job. I'm putting out my resume with my list of demands for what I want in a job. And I'm fairly sure there are companies out there that will take one look and say, 'Yoink!'. Let's see whether that's true."

NobodysHome: I know you're on break this week and it's sunny and warm, but Impus Major's heart has been acting up so I really want you to focus on having people over here. GothBard and I will be out all night, so you can bring people over and have them here as late as you want. Just make sure Impus Major stays home and stays low-key.
Impus Minor: ...looks non-plussed...
NobodysHome: Or... you can take advantage of the empty house and crippled brother to lock yourself in your room and relax undisturbed for an evening.
IM: Yeah, that sounds better.

No house party at our place tonight, apparently.

How is he supposed to work on global domination through fear and terror with a bunch of teenagers/early 20-somethings (is there a word for those? would they be twentaagers?) messing around?!

Not 100% sure, but I think it was the fourth ("Leave me to my evil and sexy affairs").

I've never seen this before, but I love that you assume it was me.

Southern Minnesota/Northern Iowa. You're going to get hit in about an hour and a half.

MLK Day in mid-January is a national holiday.

Presidents Day combines Lincoln's Birthday (February 12) with Washington's (possibly the 23rd?).
When I was a kid in school, we celebrated both of those days individually, with construction paper stovepipe hats and recitings of "Right-Hand Man" from Hamilton.
Actually, by rolling up our jeans to mimic knee breeches and doing stupid cherry tree skits.

Tomorrow morning, we're driving down to Waxahachie to look at a car. I found a good deal on a used Subaru that looks pretty much exactly like what I want.

Actually, it was meant to be a joke about the absurdity of celebrating Washington's birthday as a school child. I mean, with Lincoln, the teachers would have us see how much of the Gettysburg address we could memorize, but I wasn't kidding about making the construction paper stove pipe hats.

Lincoln was cool. We can get behind celebrating Lincoln. But Washington, that was harder back then, because we didn't have Hamilton yet to make Washington seem hip and relevant.
Yes, we did actually roll up our jeans and re-enact the stupid apocryphal cherry tree story. Because what else do you do with Washington's birthday in the 1970s?
Now that it is the combined federal holiday is just another excuse for a white sale at JCPenneys.
Pause.
This is another one of those things that is probably dating me. Do department stores even do white sales anymore?

Ponders the many possible answers that would get him perma-banned from Paizo...

...shuts mouth...

So, the *only* reason I'm posting this is that it might make people feel a little better about Federal tax law and the rich.

(1) The IRS raised the child tax credit from $2000 to $3600, then sent everyone $1000 in advance. Great, right?
Nope. I make too much money. My tax credit stayed at $2000 so now I have to send in an extra $1000.

(2) The IRS created Roth IRAs so you can squirrel away after-tax money and avoid paying taxes on the interest. Great, right?
Nope. I make too much money. I just had to cancel out my Roth IRA because I don't get to have one.

There were a lot of others my accountant listed. Apparently there's a $1400 check going out that I won't see a penny of, and a bunch of other benefits I won't see.

And y'know what? It makes me feel better about the system overall. They actually set reasonable caps on how much you can make before they say, "Y'know, you don't really need the money, so you're not getting it."

I think it was the right call.

Except the Roth IRA thing. That's kind of a jerk move. But I'm not going to complain too much as long as the capital gains tax is so much lower than "real" tax. That's where the fat cats really make out like bandits.

A sale on sheets, towels, tablecloths, tea towels, basically any woven household good. All of which at one time were basically white. Hence the name.

Holiday weekends used to be the time the big stores ran white sales.

We Reincarnated the rogue tonight. I gave her a choice: roll once on the normal chart, or roll on an expanded chart I found (with 49 choices) and can reroll once if she wanted. She chose the expanded chart, rolled a ratfolk, and said she wanted to reroll. She got merfolk. Since that would be extremely difficult in a land-based campaign, I let her keep the ratfolk roll. She still isn't very happy, but better rat than fish.

It's a cold one today! I think a high of 17 degrees.

Tomorrow, supposedly, we're going to get up to 48 degrees. We'll see. Any time they project temps above 40 in February it's generally wishful thinking.

Last night we got a bit of a snow squall, it was super windy and we got a brief 40 minute burst of snow, visibility was almost non existent. Needless to say this caused some of the younger crew leaders to freak out, fortunately I did not. And doubly fortunate, former coworker wasn't able to make it which means I was put in charge of the west side in addition to Fitchburg.

Which means I kept the crew leaders on two different fronts from losing it. Meanwhile the north side and east side devolved into chaos as crews started trying to race the snow back to the shop to get shovels and blowers to go on a full run while I just calmly told my guys to put a bit extra salt down and let the sun and warming temps this weekend do their thing.

Needless to say, everyone on my sides of town got a full night's sleep, while the east side and north side crews are probably just wrapping up.

Of course former coworker would have kept his guys together if he was there. And I made sure to keep him apprised of all the freaking out (which played out on the CB radio).

Speaking of common lies and how much they irritate me, I’m a very big fan of, “Just tell me what it costs and I’ll decide whether or not to buy it.” I’ve never understood haggling, and areas such as airline tickets and hotels where prices vary dramatically based on how booked they are annoy me, though I at least understand their desire to make money every night/trip.

Posted hotel rates are one of my peeves.

They’re legally required to post the maximum they can possibly charge for a room on the hotel door. Usually it’s 50-100% more than you’d pay walking up to the front desk and getting a same-night room. In all my travels, I have never paid the posted rate.

Last night I checked the maximum rate at the Santa Clara Marriott.

$2000/night. A number so big as to be meaningless. I just checked online, and rooms are listed at $169/night, even on the hotel’s web site. So the $2000 is basically, “We’ll charge you whatever the heck we feel like.”

If you’re going to have a law requiring hotels to post their maximum rates, you ALSO need to make sure those maximums are reasonable and remotely related to what the hotel actually charges.

I don't know how the laws are in most places, but I remember asking the manager at the first hotel I worked at about those maximum price listings. She said that there was no law regarding how high it could be, but it couldn't increase by more than a certain amount each year (I want to say 20%, but this was many many moons ago). Also, that was Florida, so who knows how it is elsewhere. Or even in Florida. It's been so long that the law could have easily changed.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Also, I hate haggling. So I don't do it. Someone asks me the rate, I tell them what it is, and they can take it or leave it. If they try to haggle, I just say "Sorry, that's the rate". The only exceptions are if they say something like "I have AAA, does that help?" or one of the other actual discounts we have. In which case, I wish they would just mention that upfront. As in "How much is a room at the AAA rate?" instead of "How much is a room. *answer given* I have AAA, does that help?".

Probably the attempt at haggling that annoyed me the most was the guy who came in, asked the rate, and when I told him what it was went (loudly) "WWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Ah, hell nah! You *clap* gots to do me some justice!!". I just stared at him blankly for 10 seconds and repeated the rate.

He didn't rent the room.

I have unlocked another potential memory regarding the "max rates" sign in the hotel. I say potential because I'm not sure if I'm remembering something I was told by a manager, something I read/heard somewhere else, or if I'm just making this up.

Places that have laws regarding the posting of maximum rates, usually have a stipulation that the same rate is posted in every room. Therefore, you may be staying in a room that rents for $100, but there may be a super-premium, ultra-deluxe, mega-suite that usually goes for $1000. And that rate can go up depending on events/occupancy/etc. So the rate posted in every room is the maximum rate they can charge for the most expensive room in the hotel.

LOL. Shiro's experience says that's not the case in California. I don't know how they flagged him, but for our last Disneyland trip he got offered the Presidential suite for a mere $22,000... WAY over the posted room rates. But I'm sure it varies state by statem (And no, he didn't take the room.)
