OK, color me impressed.

As I mentioned, we went to the Ranch 99 for the first time in 14 months, so of course Shiro and GothBard had to buy random unrecognizable snack foods (the clear winner being "steak-flavored" potato chips, which were amazing).

Shiro purchased the worst madeleines he's ever had. (They were named something different that had no e's in it, and he said, "The e must be where they keep all the butter.")
GothBard purchased the worst almond cookies she's ever had. (Imagine almond flour with just enough water to form it into a puck, then dusting it with 10% powdered sugar, 90% wheat flour. Notice I don't mention baking it. I don't think the things ever came near an oven, or even warm weather.)

So, being Shiro and GothBard, they had to get together and do a comparison.

The almond cookies won, and were, "The worst store-bought cookies either of them had ever tasted."

Win!

EDIT: The cookies are so bad they'll knock more than just your socks off!

What's Wrong with my Brain, Chapter 897:

This morning in the car I switched on NPR, and the story was about the Eurovision competition, which is the first big spectator event to happen in Europe since the start of Covid.

And because I turned it on halfway through the story, I missed the first part and what I heard was how one of the Icelandic band recently tested positive and it was such a shame because they were the odds-on favorite to win.

And because of what just happened with the Kentucky Derby, my brain went straight to doping. And I thought, what kind of performance-enhancing drug could get a rock band disqualified? Especially considering the fact that the contest is happening in Rotterdam. Isn't Holland the country where no one cares what you take as long as you bring enough to share with the rest of the class?

And it took me a good couple minutes to realize that what the band tested positive for was actually Covid.

Good Kingmaker game tonight. Raised the Barbarian, cured a werewolf and recruited him as Royal Assassin, built our first farm, almost built a brothel, and-thanks in part to a visiting celebrity on the random event table-ended the session with 12 more BPs than we started with.

Yesterday morning, Bob Ross Captain went to use the skid loader in the boulder field to harvest some boulders, only to discover that whoever used it last forgot to put gas in it so it was nearly empty (it is a huge pain in the ass when a skid loader runs out of gas).

Now, most people would just go grab a gas can and fill up it up. Bob Ross Captain is not most people, so he got on the radio and started laying into EVERYONE, especially the Latino crews (because in his mind if anything goes wrong it's clearly their fault).

But, it doesn't end there, apparently his crew members didn't show up, on account of it being a rainy Friday and his entire crew being comprised of his drinking buddies, so he starts demanding that Firefighter Kurt's crew meet him at the job site but Firefighter Kurt had just gotten back from his national guard stint and obviously needed his guys for his work, plus he's not a gaping a#+&!&*, so his crew was extremely happy to have him back. So Firefighter Kurt laid into Bob Ross Captain over the radio in the calmest, most hilarious take down I've heard.

Then he decides that he's going to demand the mowing crews help him after they're done for the day, but I'd just talked to Rocko (my winter assistant) who is a lead mower and he was complaining about the rain during the week setting them back so they'd have to work late to avoid working on the weekend, so they all issued a collective "Oh, hell no!".

So, now Bob Ross Captain is complaining about how lazy and worthless the Latino crew leader is because of reasons, and then demands they meet him at his job site, but they have to get their job done because the homeowners are having a big ass wedding this weekend, so obviously that's a big fat hilarious "no" which drives Bob Ross Captain (who is STILL complaining about the skid loader being out of gas) into a frothy rage so he says "Fine, I guess I'm just going to have to go to Home Depot and pick up some day laborers waiting outside!" To which he got the following replies in rapid fire.

Firefighter Kurt: Or, you could, you know, call your buddies and wake them up, or better yet, not get the boss to hire your drinking buddies.

Pako: If you do that, you're going to need to learn Spanish!

The Boss: I'm not paying for that, you're going to have to pay them out of your own pocket.

Absolutely hilarious.

A$~&&@&s finally went to bed. At least they didn't leave too much of a mess in the lobby, but I really wanted to throatpunch them all so many times.

Like when the kids came in and said someone was yelling at them. One of the Dads asked why. The response? "We were throwing rocks in the parking lot, and he yelled at us." The collective response of the parents? Did they get on their kids for throwing rocks, especially in a crowded parking lot? No! They wanted to go beat up the guy who dared to yell at their little darlings for throwing rocks!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I think that is grounds to kick them out.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I wish I could have. The problem, well one of the problems, is that some of the kids were outside, others weren't. The ones that were outside came in, intermingled with the ones who weren't, and I couldn't tell who was talking. Hell, I only know they said it because no one, not child or parent, had ever heard of an "inside voice". And you know that if I went over and said "Whoa, who was throwing rocks? Because the ones who were are being thrown out!" that every last one of them would swear that they didn't throw rocks. Hell, the parents would swear that none of the kids ever even went outside. So the only possible option would be to throw the whole group out, which A) isn't fair to the ones who weren't throwing rocks, and B) I can pretty much guarantee my manager wouldn't back me up on (if I could even get ahold of him).

So, I know steroids get a bad rap because, y'know, destroying your internal organs and all that, but holy carp in terms of improving quality of life in older (feline) patients they're amazing.

Calico is sitting on people's laps. Purring. Getting into the sink. Getting in everyone's way. She's acting 10 years younger. We can't have her on steroids forever, but she's 15 and the steroids aren't slowing down the degradation of her kidneys, so we can give her a pretty awesome life with the time she has left.

Feels good.

(As a side note, Shiro was on steroids after some of his cancer therapy, and he relates the same tale: You feel like a million bucks; you're just sacrificing an organ to do so. And usually it's the pancreas because diabetes is something well-understood and manageable.)

It sucks feeling like s@$~ in the summer, just saying.

So far it's just an elevated temp, sweating, and body soreness like when you get the flu and then immediately hit by a truck.

Which still didn't stop me from walking the two mile round trip to the grocery store, where I went for one item and ended up with 25 pounds of groceries in my backpack.

It was super easy, barely an inconvenience.

So because of the idiotic plan that turned our end-of-the-year cleaning/wrap-up week into a makeup snow day week, I ended up working fourteen hours of voluntary, unpaid overtime this weekend to get my classroom cleaned, reorganized, and reset for the start of term in August.
Now I get to teach four more days after the school year has already ended, have my annual faculty evaluation, and spend Friday in wall-to-wall faculty meetings.
But then I'm free.

There may or may not be a marked increase in wife abscondation.

You do realize that some people may not appreciate having their wives absconded with, right? And that some wives may not wish to be absconded with? And that some of these people who are now upset with you may have access to giant robots? Which could lead to a decrease in world peace.

I think you should just stick to whirled peas. It's a much more obtainable goal.

I have not yet gone to get my injection. There is a concern with how it will affect my high blood pressure, even thought it is a minor concern. I haven't been able to meet with my medical doctor on this as his office has been quite busy due to the obvious. I'm keeping my mask on and maintaining social distance, but a family trip has snuck up on me and I will be flying to NobodysHomeLand in a few days. I'll be maintaining the utmost level of COVID restrictions while traveling and while there. I would attempt to hang out with NobodysHome at a distance, however his state is ENORMOUS and I doubt I will be nearby his home.

At least you recognize that. You wouldn't believe how many people ping me with, "Hey, I'll be in L.A. for the weekend! We should get together and do dinner!"

For the record, it's roughly 380 miles (610 km) from our place to downtown L.A., yet people think it's something we just "pop down and do" whenever the mood strikes us. Yes, there are people who commute between the Bay Area and L.A. every weekend, but we're not those people.

EDIT: Also, this Saturday is our first in-person trip to Rivoli in 15 months plus a virtual Nightwish concert, so we're kind of booked...

Any Lawyers Out There?

One of Impus Major's friends has a serious issue his parents should have dealt with but never did: At the hospital they were stressed out, exhausted, and confused (trust me: been there, done that), so they gave the Social Security person one name, and the birth certificate person a different name.

So, for example, this person's Social Security Card reads "Howard Orlando McPherson", and their birth certificate reads "Orlando Hubert McPherson".

I looked into it for him and it looks like the Social Security Administration allows name changes in only four cases: Marriage, divorce, naturalization, or court order. And, since large amounts of money are involved, they're sticklers for it.

So now he needs to do all the paperwork to get a court order, and California says it's usually 3 months and one day in court to get the order.

The big question is, is there any way for him to shorten/bypass the process, or has his parents' mistake doomed him to a day in court?

Freehold, I am not a doctor and I don't know your specific situation, but I know *multiple* people with high blood pressure, including Aiymi, who have gotten the vaccine and have not had issues. One of my friends got the second shot just a week after having a stroke and continued wildly fluctuating blood pressure. No issues from the vaccine.

Aiymi's father has two rare blood disorders, high blood pressure, and massive clotting problems. He was still able to get vaccinated.

Of course, speak to your doctor over me, but I haven't seen any research stating that there is a major problem with the COVID vaccines interacting with BP medications.

Does using math to calculate strength and trajectory of impromptu bolt thrower to shot the teacher dead fits the criteria or is there too much physics involved?

Notes on the Day:
- The pollen season has finally hit the point that masks aren't cutting it any more. Over the last two days, the Prius has developed a thick yellow powdery coat, kind of like a light dusting of snow that's thick enough that you have to run the windshield wipers to be able to see. All pollen. GothBard and I are rather miserable, but at least it didn't hit us until May.

- Impus Minor asked me to rate their, "Move off to the side and then attack part of the surrounding army, hoping to be able to kill the troops fast enough that we don't get overwhelmed," strategy. I gave it a solid 6 of 10, telling him that the two issues were that they've almost ensured some of their NPCs will die and a few bad die rolls will put them in deep trouble. I pointed out the near-zero-risk approach of hitting the human army from afar with a host of low-light archers who could then flee to waiting horses and escape. "You'd probably have wiped them out before they even reached the orphanage. They had virtually no defenses against enemies who could see in the dark and you have good enough riding rolls to guide the horses at a 'faster than a human can maintain' trot even in the dark."
"But that would have been BORING! I don't care if we lose a few NPCs if I'm not going to be bored to death!"

Er... fair enough. Remind me not to be your NPC...

- Re: Long-term stuff: Yeah, in grad school we had a guy whose wife and kids lived in the North Bay, and he'd commute out early Monday morning, had a room in town for the week, and went home straight after class on Friday. Worked well for him.
