I should clarify: I don't cough ON people who come near me. I exaggerate and fake them in public, so people don't come near me in the first place.

Put this elsewhere, but I like conversations with people, so I'm putting this here, too.

Just started watching The Mitchells vs. The Machines and it may well be very stereotypical of me, but I can't really fault the father character's actions so far (mostly), even if various people in the movie do*.

In the major conflict so far, he's:

* agreed to watch his daughter's film which he absolutely does't understand (but restrains himself from commenting on it)

* when the daughter sees his face, she pauses the film presses him for his opinion (which he was trying not to give until it was over)

* he is as honest while being as tactful as he can be, both acknowledging his own concerns while intentionally refusing to state that he expects her to fail (she is the one who is providing that interpretation and insisting on it)

* she then is angry at him for (a) not agreeing with her and (b) daring to suggest she even explore more than one idea for her future

* he intentionally attempts to reconcile her stated irritation of "not even finishing the film" (which, again, she's the one who stopped the film) by attempting to finish the film

* she then attempts to yank the laptop out of his hands; because it's an expensive piece of equipment (and she does so with anger, and he's frustrated), he holds tightly

* she initiates a tug-of-war where his goal is to watch her film (which is what she wants) and hers is to take her film and walk away

* she finally yanks it free from his grasp and... accidentally flings it into the wall... after which she blames him (saying of her broken device, "this is why I'm excited about leaving tomorrow")

From this incident, it seems clear that he is expected to: have no emotion other than positively and passively support his daughter in whatever it is she's doing, even if he doesn't understand it or agree. That is a *terrible* way to be a parent. I do think there were several places he could have de-escalated or done "better", but he never once initiated a conflict.

*:

I am judging only the individual moments of the film, not whatever history they have.

So, immediately he makes choices that I disagree with.
But my analysis of the first conflict remains! :D

When I tell my kids they're stuck in a small town that's about to be surrounded by bandits, if they don't suggest plans about using disguises on the townsfolk to make it look like the PCs are everywhere at once (Three Amigos) or that they should make cardboard cutouts to fool the bandits (Blazing Saddles), I feel like I'm raising them wrong.

But I would second what T-Li said last page; maybe listing off some of their assets might be handy. You told them what they don't have, which is ranged attackers, what DO they have?

Last but not least, I'm absolute garbage at strategy! My fellow players make fun of me when I get to be a PC and they absolutely love how foolish I am with moving monsters on battlemaps. Still, I do understand a tiny bit about the use of walls, ditches, filling holes with oil you can light on fire, outfitting areas with spikes, etc just from taking Latin class in HS and watching old Roman epic films.

Have the kids studied a lot of group fighting tactics in any media like the movies they watch, books they study or whatever? It might be that they just don't know what they're doing. That one player does, too bad he gets shot down all the time, but for everyone else they might just not know how to deal with armies.

Heck, the best training guide for this (IMO) is Robert Lynn Asprin's Myth Conceptions. The summary of the story is that one glorified wizard apprentice kid and his rag-tag team of misfits (I think 6 in total) have to fight off the mightiest army his kingdom has ever known. The only victories they win in battle are from illusions, very minor magic tricks, subterfuge and liberal use of delaying tactics.

Anyway, I hope the kids had fun regardless.

I've already determined if work *insists* on us going mask-less, that's another reason to give notice.

Contrast over two-decades of getting sick 5-6 times a year, sometimes for days versus getting sick for one day (and then being kept out for a couple of days of precautions).

If people enter my six foot bubble, I'll whack them with a broom or baseball bat. If they try to say I'm 'not being customer friendly' or even 'you assaulted that customer' I will note that it's self-defense and better customer service than barfing on the customer or going out for a week of illness.

And when I *run* from an aisle that has a maskless person step into it, I'd better not hear any complaining.

The best part of the masks is that it's helped 'tone down' the nasty funk that nicotine/weed/vapers/etc have around them that would normally have me heading for the allergy pills. I don't need to smell that, thank you.

EDIT: Also strongly tempted to take pictures of the maskless folks in case I need to build a case for harrassment and self-defense. Y'know, just in case.

Hey, John.

Being 'essential' in a society that seems to think 'that was just a fad' is thankless.

Even moreso when we have guidelines that management actively refuses to enforce, and people who actively rebel against because "You ain' th' boss of me!"

As a result, there has been little opportunity to actually have a day off and vent here. Usually I want to drink (bad idea) and forget (worse idea).

They wonder why people aren't working? Because they ain' paying SHIT and keeping people 'starved' at 12 hours a week at shit pay thinking it'll 'make them hungry'

It's really amazingly aggravating how many people think, "Oh, it would be much faster to do this in a meeting!"

Meetings are NEVER faster.

Impus Minor did poorly on his last physics exam. I asked the teacher for a copy of the exam so I could review it with him. With online learning, it's a Google Form that got locked once he turned it in, and she said she didn't know how to unlock it.

There would be a multitude of ways to proceed. Send me screenshots of the test. A PDF of a blank test. Phone pics.

Instead she's set up an hourlong meeting over lunch to discuss the test.

I don't want or need an hourlong meeting; I have a degree in physics from U.C. Berkeley. If I can't decipher a high school-level physics exam I'll have to have words with them.

I just want a fricking copy of the darned exam (blank is fine), along with Impus Minor's work so I can see what he did wrong.

Why is that so hard?

I have no motivation today.

I have work to do. I just don't want to do it.

I could work out. I just don't want to.

I could run an errand to my mom's house. Nope, no energy to do that either - setting aside whether that is a good use of gas in the southeast at the moment.

So meh. I have a DF build itching to come out on a table - not that it will get played, but because building DF is relaxing. Just not sure a mental health afternoon is a good idea at the moment.

Ah well. Back to the bureaucracy.

Dwarven Forge. IMO the best 3D scenery made for TTRPGs and to some extent war-gaming.

There are plenty of alternatives, many of them less expensive, but I have yet to encounter any that provide the same detail, durability, and just general awesome. O and great customer support.

I accept that other people may disagree with my conclusion - particularly when the price is considered.

If they provided the exam and it was proven erroneous, then the teacher would be stuck in the unenviable position of trying to defend a faulty test?

Better to avoid that with a discussion that completely ignores the test and instead tries to hammer home how much of a 'bad parent' you are (from all appearances that seems like a false statement) and how great the teaching is?

((And this is the thought process I'm seeing from teachers...)) And if you're 'so good' that you can teach physics, why aren't you either A: In the classroom teaching Physics? or B: Home-schooling?

Nope; it really was, "I don't know how to do this."

The "Meeting" was her sharing her screen on Zoom and having me screenshot each page of a blank exam.

And this is a person with a strong pedigree in physics, having even worked at Lawrence Berkeley Lab before deciding to become a teacher.

I'm baffled, because throughout my career my job has been, "Here's new technology. Figure it out!"

I can't understand getting a new product and then not testing every single feature.

EDIT: She DID ask, "Are you confident that you'll be able to work out the answers? Do you have enough of a physics background?" and I got to use my U.C. Berkeley line.
It broke the ice and got the ball rolling.

From my conversation with the HR guy, the pay should be about 4-5k/year more, starting paid time off is at least as much as I was getting after 7.5 years at the old job, the health insurance carrier is the same as what I had, so I won't have to change my doctors...and the work should be dealing with less managerial problems, less direct user contact, and more work on servers and project implementation instead of "stupid user problems", though there will still be some of that.

But my every day work existence should not be filled with continual anguish.

Played a PF2 game recently.

We had the 'revolving door' of folks AFK/passed out/disconnected from Discord, which made the game run an extra hour and a half.

It left me scratching my head, tired, and disgusted.

In addition, felt bad for the younger gamer who kept trying to get a word in, but the old grogs in the game kept talking over them and the GM didn't do anything to lock it down.

Anyone else have just a *bad* table play experience recently?

Our last game took place in Kyrrn well close to it. (a place in dragon lance) They ran into some dragon hunters/ Mercs. fought them, looted them. Then ran into the green dragon. Gave the dragon the loot from the hunters and made a deal. then set forth to their destination. that pretty well sums up my last one.

I can't really play tabletop online, on account of not having a computer.

So I'm waiting until everyone is vaccinated and in person PFS starts up again.

If I can corral the General and kids in one room or set up a table outside then we can play Starfinder, or Pathfinder 2.

On the plus side, I've tricked my younger brothers to play Call of Cthulhu so I've been learning that, which looks like it's going to be a blast!
