If you're going to be interviewing for an IT job during a pandemic, please have home internet that isn't interrupted by rain.

Honestly I couldn't care less if you're wearing clothes or not.

Isn't that person at the mercy of local isps?

The problem is, Co-worker used to be the big picture guy, he'd look at a project and be able to figure out every single step, but he's been skipping steps, or just guessing without actually looking at measurements or researching what material we're using, trying to cut corners or trying to skip ahead, and so then I have to go back and fix it, or we have to tear it down and do it over, which is really frustrating when you pride yourself on doing it perfectly every time.

I don't know if he's having health issues, marital problems, or whatever but there's only so much a person can handle before a coup.

I can look at the big picture stuff, and I've actually found that playing Pathfinder and Starfinder has given me a better grasp of looking at everything.

You got a landscaping plan, then a job order which specifies everything we're doing, and exactly what material we're installing and then product catalogs that show all the materials and their dimensions. So before you even start digging you have to read everything and cross reference it with your paperwork.

What NobodysHome Likes In A Company:

So, Toyota of Berkeley really shines as an example of what I like in a company:
(1) When I called in about the catalytic converter, the person said, "Yeah, we have to inspect the damage, then order the parts, so we'll have to keep it for a few days. Just plan on bringing it in whenever and dropping it off for a week or so and we'll take care of you."

(2) Taking her at her word, I drove in. A wonderful service rep was with me in under 60 seconds. And she said, "Well, I can't give you an official estimate, but it'll probably run around $3200. But I can't write that down."
An actual, honest estimate without the whole, "Oh, I can't tell you that without seeing it," nonsense.

(3) The next day, after work, she called. "I'm sorry. Our guys couldn't get to it today, so I don't have an estimate for you, but I wanted to let you know tomorrow's my day off so you won't hear from me. If you can wait until Saturday I'll call you then, otherwise you can call in the late afternoon on Friday and someone should have an estimate for you."

Honest, clear communication. What a concept!

And I like my description of today to my friends and family. "Imagine you're facing a massive IRS audit, so you have to have all the paperwork together, in order, without a single page missing, by their deadline. That was my week this week. Today I've handed everything to the IRS, but now I have to deal with the mess I made trying to find everything. So yeah, it's low-stress, but it's almost as much work putting all this stuff away, so I'm still pretty hammered today."

It's something easy to understand and they're leaving me to it.

Yes, but this is a person in another country applying for a US-based IT position. The posting is quite clear that they will be supporting US-based users, and our contracted partner in that country is also quite clear that any candidate will be working from home for the foreseeable future due to pandemic restrictions in that country.

So if you're in IT, or trying to break into IT, you should know that you have to have reliable internet in order to do the job.

Even without a pandemic involved, it's well known among IT people that even if a company doesn't do much with work-from-home, the IT department ends up doing a lot of work from home. Having a good home internet connection is a common and known expectation.

Having to reschedule a remote interview because it's raining doesn't bode well for your ability to do the job.

Just a reminder that Good still exists in the world:

1. A card was lifted before it got to me in the mail
2. Several small, fraudulent transfers as well as minor business transactions occurred
3. The card and my existing one have both been cancelled
4. The transfers will be back in my acct by the end of the day; I'm out some change and a few bills will be delayed but ultimately will get paid

Thank the maker this wasn't worse. I dodged a cruise missile. Now I can go back to JUST being scared of diseases, guys around my daughters, traffic and the other million things on my mind these days.

Happy Friday

In my experience this goes much easier if you own a crossbow. The Adult Kid used to take her prospective boyfriends down to the basement (telling me beforehand) and I'd hear her go "And that's my step-dad's crossbow. He's a good shot with it. You have officially been warned."

I told my daughter she can date when she's 30, or has a PhD. Whichever comes first.

If she's a genius and has her doctorate at 13, I guess I'll be able to trust her judgment.

But until then, it's "Remember your uncle doesn't mind going back to jail, so do tell all the boys that."

18 Y O lives outside the house. Currently has new boyfriend living with her (2 weeks into arrangement). Not much I can do there.

16 Y O lives with me. Has dated both boys and girls. I'm supportive to her identity search but have the same rule for any date in the house: you're where I can see you or your door is open enough that I can hear you down the hall. Also I'm the NOSIEST quarantine dad ever.

I don't own a crossbow. I do however still press 220 even though I'm in my 40s and only stand 5'5". Between being intrusive and looking like a tiny brick wall, most kids she brings home tend to stare at their shoes.

But. I. Still. Worry.

MAN it would be nice to turn off my brain for a while...

NEVER trust the judgement of a thirteen year old, I don't give a f!#+ how many PhDs they have.

Your judgement ability at thirteen is less than zero.

Yeah...we have a size limit on emails that can be sent or received...and it's 35 MB, which is roughly 7-15 times the size of what most companies allow. So we're being really generous. And you knew this, because you complain about it to me at least once a year. And I tell you to stop emailing those files and use a network drive or One Drive or FTP or damn near anything other than email to share these files. Go away.

Pfff, yeah. People b~$+* that our scan to mail is 10MB

I know you're kidding but...

Last week my niece was rushed off to the hospital. She'd been crying during the night (she's 1,5 years, it happens), and when my brother went to do a diaper change, there was blood in her diaper.

So they rushed her off to the nearest doctor, who send them to the only hospital on the island, after which they were sent to Ghent in belgium.

Her small intestine had infolded itself in two places. Officially called 'invagination'. They opened her belly and pulled the intestine back to normal, so luckily no part of the intestine had to be removed.

She's still very scared at night. But she'll make a full recovery.

Parenting is hard. Parenting other kids is harder. A friend of my daughter's came to stay with us starting Tuesday night. She's been living on a couple of couches for a few months b/c her father kicked her out and ours was the last "favor" she could borrow.

When she arrived she didn't even have shoes.

I've given her a roof, food, and asked my older daughter to drive over and donate some clothes and shoes. I think I've been fairly kind to her. My only rule is no drama; my daughter suffers from pretty intense depression and anxiety so I need to really manage the atmosphere as much as I can.

Last night, after I went to bed, a boy came calling for said houseguest. What I've discovered is that my houseguest took his call and chatted with him first, then there was some drinking when he got here, followed by loud shouting/drama which is when I woke up and got involved. The boy was forcibly moved down my front walk, then we talked, he left.

I've now asked my houseguest to leave. I had one rule. That rule was broken. I KNOW that there's record heat coming this weekend, there's a pandemic out there, this boy can find her more easily outside and even that she has nowhere to go. I KNOW all the reasons I might be a jerk.

But my daughter barely slept all night. When she did the nightmares came back. She's my kid dammit.

Parenting. Is. Hard.

Speaking of IT...

It came to my mind I could up a bit performance of my laptop by upgrading its memory from 8 GB (nominally at least *waves to integrated card and various windows mess than occupies a significant part of it*) to maybe its maximum of 16 GB...

Step one. Get information about what exactly memory goes into my laptop. Wasn't there a windows tab or screen that identified memory you have inside? The sticker only says DDR3 L memory, and I need to know more before I start checking the prices. Can't find it in the system, the settings, the system information...

Googling the laptop series told me it is supposed to be PC3-12800 DDR3. I also found a video of someone replacing the memory in TE69 series - easy-peasy, two accessible slots (more about it later). Still no idea what frequency it uses.

(actually, I found it just now in a place that I didn't search before - task manager, performance tab, it's 800 MHz, two slots out of two occupied)

Step two. It occurred to me that I have no idea if I have two 4 GB chips or single 8 GB chip (obviously, the later would be much preferable). So, the time to open the access pane... Uh, oh... There are two chips in two slots, yeah... Except one of those slots is inaccessible, covered with parts of the frame, and would require picking it apart.

Urgh. So much for putting two 8 GB sticks easily. I never managed to get that far with disassembling this laptop with my clumsy, low dex appendages. The laptop could use a dismantling like this - for interior cleaning, but I don't feel secure enough with it, maybe if I get another computer I will be willing to do that.

Neither I am willing to pay an exorbitant fee for someone else doing that. And everyone is too old for doing such things for a symbolic beer.

Sorry, but no. You are not even remotely a jerk. The "one rule" thing is incredibly important. We had a woman move in with us because her parents had thrown her out. She lacked any sense of hygiene; no showering, stunk all the time, and drank directly from containers in the fridge. We found out because the milk started spoiling almost daily.

We said, "Stop drinking directly from the carton or we're throwing you out!"

She didn't think we were serious, so she ignored us. And we threw her out.

A couple of years later she told us that our sticking to our guns was the first slap in the face she needed to start turning her life around. "Hey, when someone's doing something nice for me and I treat them like dirt, they can stop being nice to me!"

I mean, yes, she deserves a huge amount of credit for going from homeless to putting herself through college, and it wasn't *just* us. But she still said that our reaction was her first step in figuring out that she needed to stop being a burden on others, and that was huge for her.

Know this: it takes under 30 seconds to send a text saying "can't make it: I'll explain why later."

Once is an accident. Half a dozen times is telling me you value my time so little it's not worth 30 seconds of yours.

In my Pathfinder game last night, I got a good laugh out of the GM. I had cast Mirror Image on myself before a fight, and she was annoyed because she kept hitting the images instead of me. I was down to 1 last image, so on my turn I cast it again. She said "I can't believe you prepared that twice. Oh well, I'll whittle them down again." I replied "Go ahead. I actually used all seven of my 2nd level spell slots today to prepare Mirror Image, so let's do this!"

The fight ended before she had gotten through even half of that second set of images.

That is evil.

No, my character is TN.

For some reason I pegged you as a habitual CN player.

Actually, I tend to go for LN or NG most of the time. Just for this character TN worked best.

(Essentially, he used to be unashamedly LE, but things happened and he is changing. He lost his blind faith in authority, changing from Lawful to Neutral, and he has been trying to be a better person. So far he has reached Neutral, with the hope that he can eventually become Good.)

Not as many animal companions in the APG 2 as I'd been led to believe.

No new paths for clerics either.

Not a lot for wizards either, though they get Staff Nexus as an arcane thesis, which is pretty cool.

Although they have a 12th level wizard feat called Diviner Sense that I keep reading as Dinner Sense.

I didn't think it was out yet. you get digital copy early?

There's a lot of fun stuff for rogues, two new rackets and some fun sounding feats, like Head Stomp (4th level), Predictable! (4th), The Harder They Fall (yup, 4th level) and Stay Down! (14th).
