Yeah no, you don't get to police who gets to post and who doesn't.

What's got you in such a mood today?

Nah. My players will get TPK'ed and say it was a "great session" if it was. They'll one-round the BBEG and complain about him using Charm Person at the dinner table rather than about his tactics or build.

F~&@ them.

If it helps, they fixed that in Pathfinder 2, it's codified that the NPCs and monsters aren't built the same as PCs.

I mean, that's just a nonstarter with NH's team. You definitely can't avoid getting hit in 2E however.

Yeah that's one of the strikes against it for me, since that's one of the main things I like about 3e/PF1. I had the same complaints with 4e, and it's one of the things keeping me at arms' length from learning to DM for 5e.

But it's way easier making NPCs and monsters of your own.

To each their own, I prefer working within the extant system and knowing the PCs and NPCs are pulling from the same playbooks. That's more my style.

Initial estimates of results show a bit over 100 thousand votes of difference...

This will be a long week or two...

There's nothing wrong with that, I like all three versions of Pathfinder, with Starfinder being my favorite.

I love Pathfinder Classic (especially Occult Adventures) don't get me wrong but I'm starting to like 2nd edition more and more (especially if they update Occult Adventures in the near future).

At any rate, it's just fun pointing out where they changed things.

Such human beings are not welcome in my company.

I think you guys may be having two different conversations. I have played with the type of people you are referring to, and it is not fun.

This weekend, ALL (DE) and the kids and I went for a trip out into the country, where we rented a little shed up in the Lancashire moor, in a field with lots of other little sheds (at least 6ft apart - safety first!), a stream, a grumpy black and white cat that only cheered up when ALL (DE) gave it sardines, the sound of distant bulls and horses, and over-priced logs for sale.

The kids complained at first, then got into it, making friends with another lad of similar age who was there, running around and spending an extraordinary amount of time chucking sticks into the screen; we also had a barbecue and chilled out around the fire a couple of times, enjoyed the lack of traffic din and police sirens, and also had a tasty fish & chip supper that made everybody fart later on, which is something you don't want in a little shed without a great deal of ventilation.

Still, we all enjoyed ourselves, especially as it's finally stopped raining for the first time in around three weeks.

During tonight's game, WW asked, "Does anyone have anything that does nonlethal damage?"

Val piped up with, "Well, I've got a waterproof stuffie in my backpack..."

Nothing amuses me more than watching my husband take four rounds to buff himself to the teeth, certain that the Big Bad is waiting in the next room, and the next two rooms are empty. And the room after that is three minor-league henchmen.

If the monsters and NPCs don't have to follow the rules, what's the point? If the game side of this story game is tossed, why even bring dice? I mean if in the end your prep as a player is meaningles because the GM arbitrarily breaks random rules, then what is the point of even building a character? Just tell a story, then.

I don't know about you, but if I wanted to only RP, I'd join an improv troop.

Something has to settle arguments. That's what the rules are for.

Which can include 'X can break the rules'.

Don't get me wrong, the opposite is worse. I would play a videogame if I wanted a lack of player agency.

I got railroaded hard last week in a Runelords game so bad I started taking shots mid game and was wasted by the time we made it to a fight. And I almost never drink alcohol.

But telling me I can't blow up a mansion with enough coal powder and manure to send a rocket into orbit because supposedly a haunt can stop me from lighting the fuse a mile away is bullshit. OOC he admitted it was because we would avoid an entire dungeon. Heaven forbid you improvise, or move to the next part of the story.

This GM has been grumpy and finicky lately, though, and the group has Ben circling the drain, so it was symptomatic of a bigger issue.

I respectfully disagree. The minute the standards aren't the same for enemies, said rules don't actually settle arguments.

I can understand your position, but feel the issue you have, in my opinion, is problem players. No amount of rules finagling solves that issue.

I think tho your probably thinking in extremes. Like I think as a DM If I want to stretch or break the rules a little for the sake of the story Its not gonna ruin anything. You just do it a little like a white lie. That said I do always improvise my games. I try to follow the rules for the most part I have been guilty of fudging a dice roll or changing the way an ability works on a monster to make it work for what I want. I've had a monster die early before because it was more dramatic then them slowly pinging it down, or have one last longer to add to the drama.

I think it is because I started out running 1st edition D&D and the rules were so soft that you kind of had to to make it work.

Not gonna lie, TOZ, a long time back I saw you give that exact advice yeaaaaars ago and it was the best advice I've found on these boards: drop toxic players.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yeah I am gun shy about new players because of having to deal with the toxic ones in the past. the best thing to do is drop them. agree 1000%

But a lot of 3.x/pf players are heavy gamists, and the appeal is to some a large part the challenge of the build and "winning".

I've personally moved away from that philosophy, but I do know the appeal of it. And it's not the "wrong" way to play, or a bad thing to desire in your games. I've even enjoyed designing those types of games for players...a challenge to just scrape by from. In the past. These days I forfeit the CR and such for a more streamlined story experience like FATE.

It's just important for players and GM to both agree on what they want beforehand, whatever it is.

Doctor: "Relax, David. It's just a simple procedure. Everything's going to be fine."
Patient: "...My name's Steven, not David."
Doctor: "I know. I'm David."

Oh I agree on that. If I want a more story focused and sometimes I do I like to hit up White wolf books. It's just easier to run D&D pf etc. tho. You just pop open the beastiary and you can fill 6 hours with a few encounters and traps if need be.

I do think it is silly for players to try and build to beat the DM tho. Like I as the DM can always win. I will just throw a beholder headed tarrasque and each of the beholders eyes are demi-liches. Like I will win. If I really want to stomp you I'll just throw 3 clones of yourself at you. You can not win that arm's race.

I was at the bar the other night and overheard three very hefty women talking at the bar. Their accent appeared to be Scottish, so I approached and asked, "Hello, are you three lassies from Scotland?" One of them angrily screeched, "It's Wales, Wales you bloody idiot!" So I quickly apologized and replied, "I am so sorry. Are you three whales from Scotland?"
And that's the last thing I remember.
