Other then possibly misspelling Linus...

I'm fairly sure I've posted it before, but I still like my own summary:

Windows: Tries to do everything for you, does most of it wrong, but makes it easy for you to fix that*.

Mac: Tries to do everything for you, does most of it right, but makes it almost impossible for you to fix anything that IS wrong.

Linux: Does nothing for you, so every single time you try to do anything, even something simple, you have to Google how to do it, open up a command prompt, do a bunch of copy-and-paste, then do trial-and-error until it works the way you want it to. Then it works perfectly forever. Until you want to change it again and you have to Google it again because you've forgotten what you did.

---

*Windows 10 went to a great deal of effort to hide administrative tasks and make it MUCH harder to fix your settings, plus I've mentioned how Windows 10 has taken to un-setting your settings because it thinks it knows better than you, so Windows 10 loses a great deal of that "easy for you to fix" aspect, which is why I refuse to buy/install it for my personal machines. I accept that this is a poor decision for a gaming machine, but...

I typically make some type of random encounter table in a flat file.

=== file: randomEncounter.txt ===
1. A smiling girl hands a hero a ring and flees as its troll owner arrives and notices it.
2. A rope leading into a cave ends in bloody severance.
3. The party finds an enormous tome written in Draconic with the title Indigestion: What Creatures to Avoid.
===

Then, at the Linux command prompt use the 'shuf' command to draw randomly from it.

> shuf -n 2 randomEncounter.txt

(-n is number of draws)

Right now Win 10 has two sets of settings. The new Win 10 version of the settings, which I hate, and the old Win 7 version, which is disorganized but I at least know where everything is. And certain things just work better.

The funny part, to me, is just how often the new version of Settings will ultimately take you to the old Win 7 version to make certain changes.

For instance, if you want to sync the system time to time.nist.gov or time.windows.com, the basic "Sync Now" button is on the first page of the new settings. However, if you want to change that server, you have to go through multiple links until it finally pulls up the original Windows 7 (and really it's Vista) panel to change it.

Something that the vast majority of people never see and never need to is the area to change the computer's name and domain/workgroup. In the old Win 7 panel, they're both right there, in the same place. Both changes can be made simultaneously after a single reboot. In the new Win 10 settings, changing the domain is in one area and it won't let you leave without a reboot. The computer name change is in a completely different area, and again, requires a reboot.

I understand cleaning things up, making them look more modern, making them more accessible for touch screens (the original plan for Win 10 - one OS for all consumer devices - which fizzled), but they just never finished the job and what they did finish tends to undo 10-15 years of conditioning.

As far as general users go though...for the most part...I think Win 10 is a step better than 7.

As far as the rest of it...Win 10 thinking it knows better than you...unfortunately Microsoft has the data proving that's the case when you look at the overall picture of the user base. Most people weren't updating their computers, so they made Win 10 do it automatically. Most people did blah, and it was breaking things, so Win 10 either doesn't allow blah to happen or it does it in a different way that's either logically better but questionably implemented or just asinine altogether.

Of course, that just makes it more annoying for those of us that know what the hell we're doing or why we like certain things to be set certain ways.

I still haven't had my home or work PCs lose their settings after updates though. You and Shiro do (aside from that one time a couple months back) but Woran and I don't. No idea.

If you read El Reg or other online IT "news", you'll see Shiro and I aren't alone; maybe 1-2 updates a year change some preference that some users didn't want changed. I just seem to be unusually "lucky" in what I set.

The *BIG* one that kills Windows 10 for me is that d****d wireless setting: "If you have a wireless network available, use it in preference to ANY OTHER CONNECTION."
I've had to show my kids and their friends how to turn off their wireless adapters on their Windows 10 machines when they're trying to do downloads, and they'll jump from 50-100 KBps to 3-4 MBps, just because Windows isn't trying to use the ******* wireless connection any more. I use wireless to run my games in the dining room, but as I've mentioned, if I forget to turn it off when I go back to work with my laptop under my desk, my VPN client complains that it can't connect even though the hardwired line is fine.

More than anything else, I *hate* Windows' prioritization of networking because I worked at a real-time company where we knew how to write networking drivers. And Microsoft clearly doesn't.

I was forced to threaten people's jobs today.

The level of stupid/lazy committed by someone that used to be on my team is mind-boggling, and it's the kind of stupid/lazy that can, ultimately, be the direct cause of a large company going under. Wouldn't take down a megacorp like State Farm or Google or anything like that, but it would still do some damage.

Now I'm having to coordinate the effort to fix the FUBAR.

Now I'm having to coordinate the effort to fix the FUBAR.

I feel a follow-up is in order on this one, but I can't get into details.

By being a combination of stupid, lazy, and incompetent in a ratio that only a NYC cab driver can truly replicate, a person who should have been fired a couple years ago, but was only let go a couple months ago for reasons I can't explain (literally - I have no idea why), has managed to have more past sins exposed. Those past sins go back 5 years, and I just got the initial report yesterday.

Today we've got the initial scope as it relates to a single client. Once we clean this up, I have to have a couple people audit everything similar to this with our other clients from those offices to see if the Previously Employed snuck any more in like this.

As I mentioned, my boss is out this week, and so I'm acting commander of the department. I explained the situation to the team, and then I said, "The person who did this is no longer employed with the company. If I find out any of you have also done this, I will make it my personal mission to have you fired. Do not take the path of least resistance just because it seems like a good idea at the time. When I say 'Do your jobs', I'm saying use your head. Get the work done. Get it done right. Follow the procedures. If you come across something where the procedures don't work, bring it up with <my boss>. Bring it up with me. We'll figure out a better way. The path of least resistance is the easiest way to find yourself on your couch instead of at your desk. The issue in question breaks multiple compliances and breaches client contracts. Do the math of what would happen next."

I'm not upset that I had to explain just how serious I took this situation. I'm upset that the situation required me to spell it out in those terms to the people who didn't have a hand in screwing it up in the first place. I shouldn't have to explain this one to IT professionals.

But apparently this bag is not a toy.

Says so right here.

In terms of sheer enjoyment, Borderlands 2 is still at the apex; if you haven't played Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, you haven't played Borderlands.

Borderlands 3 plays very much like 2 and has similar twisted plot points, but the skill trees are a bit more complex and make for kludgy gameplay (I'm playing the siren, and while I can choose which type of elemental damage my special ability is doing at the moment, it involves going a couple of levels deep into a menu, which really isn't realistic when someone yells, "He's got a big shield! Switch to shock damage!" mid-combat.)

All the kids have already finished it, and say that the gameplay is fine, but the story really sucks. Not quite as bad as Far Cry 5, but most of them gave up playing once they finished the story, which is NOT a good sign. (Borderlands 3 already has a lot of DLC, and considering we ripped through almost all of Borderlands 2's DLC, seeing the kids not continuing is a bad sign.)

So we're having fun so far, but it's not as fun as 2, probably on a par with 1, and much, much, MUCH better than the prequel.

LOL. Shiro realized that he HAD an Epic account and already had some games on it, so the big blocker was, "Can it run on Linux?" Since the answer seemed to be a general consensus of, "Yes," we bought it, and so far so good.

As an aside, between Steam's Proton engine and the Lutris project, I'm happy to report that using a Linux machine for gaming is now a viable option. The only game I haven't been able to run on Linux so far has been Age of Mythology, and that's been (surprise surprise) because of Microsoft's cheat protection on the game. (For multiplayer it checksums each user's local files to make sure no one is cheating, and the Linux checksum doesn't match the Windows checksum, so no multiplayer across platforms.)

EDIT: Fortunately, Age of Mythology is such an old game it runs on my work laptop, and Global Megacorporation's IT policy is, "You can put personal licensed software on your work machine, but the moment it causes any IT issues we're wiping your whole machine."

In other words, as long as you don't complain, you can use your laptop for whatever...

Too late to edit:

The other thing that's really bothersome is that the skill trees have been mix-n-matched so that if you want to specialize in a particular style of play, you have to hunt all over all of your trees to find it. For example, suppose you want to build a Borderlands 1-style melee siren. Well, in one tree you get bonus melee damage in the second tier, so you have to burn 5 skill points to unlock it, and none of those skills are conducive to a melee build. Even worse, if you search for more melee damage, there's another bonus to melee damage in the third tier... of a different tree.

So once you decide, "This is going to be my play style," you find that actually trying to build it using the skill trees is a nightmare, and instead of a handful of "wasted" points in BL1 or BL2, you end up "wasting" 3/4 of your skill points just to unlock the skills you want/need for your style. It's really quite frustrating at the moment.

It's always really annoying when a salesperson tells you something, you assume they're just trying to shill product, you decline their offer, and you find out later that they really were trying to do their best by you.

Long story short:
(1) The roof, solar, fireplace, and debt consolidation ate our HELOC
(2) The contractors doing our fireplace, who we LOVE, are really happy with us and said they'd be totally willing to rebuild our deck and do our bathroom remodel this summer.

Er... except...
...the deck'll likely be close to $12,000, and the bathroom'll be close to $40,000, and where will that $52,000 come from?

Thinks back to loan broker telling me I should really take out an extra $50k because I'd likely find other projects I wanted to do

D'oh!

=====
(On the other hand, our financial situation hasn't changed much at all since we got the loan, and we've added over $100,000 in value to the home (solar sells), so somehow I think the bank'll be happy to oblige with the increase... if it's within their rules to be able to do so.)

EDIT: And CY, before you tell me you'll do the deck for half that so I'd save money flying you out, putting you up, and having you do it instead, let's at least let them get in a bid, shall we? I'm just guessing $12,000 because after our catastrophic experience with 'artificial wood', this time we're going with real wood, so I'll be yet another Sierra Club member with a redwood deck. And real wood is expensive.

EDIT 2: We installed Trex decking in 2008. It came with a 10-year warranty. It pretty much disintegrated after 11 years. It's really appallingly bad. Just a month ago GothBard fell straight through the deck at the top of the staircase, and only sheer luck prevented her from being seriously injured. My under-12 deck is a patchwork of plywood sheets covering the holes where people have fallen through the Trex. Yeah. Don't buy Trex.

EDIT 3: Well, that was fast. In an effort to be as helpful as possible, the credit union elf didn't just tell me, "No, we can't increase your limit," which would have been fine. She told me, "No, we can't increase your limit, but we can sure as heck refinance you into a new one! I've forwarded all your information to our loan broker on your behalf!"

It'll be a boatload of paperwork and a nightmare of notary publics and document signings, but yep, the credit union is more than happy to plunge us deeper into debt.

Thanks?
