Being that this is the first week back at school, I'm a bit preoccupied.
And since today was WW's payday, I'd been waiting to stock up on both groceries and gas.
But I stayed an hour late at school doing emails to parents and the classroom laundry and, well, stuff, and then left in just enough time to get Teensy Valeros to ballet class and then run with Hermione to the grocery store, and then back to pick up Val, and then home to make dinner, and... yeah.
I ran out of gas in the fast lane on the freeway after dark.
Luckily, WW was only a few miles behind me on his way home from work, so stopped to pick up a Jerry can and a couple of gallons and then came and rescued me, and yelled at me a whole lot.
Not the best evening ever.

Whatever you do, *don't* let him insist on storing a jerry can in your car from now on. Not only are they the obvious little firebomb hazard they are, but no matter how tightly you close them, you still smell them.

Ha! Last snow run I ran the Death Trap out of gas twice!

Edit: In fairness to myself, the gas gauge doesn't work unless you turn it off for a few minutes, but every time you have to start it you run the risk it won't start or it might start on fire (which has happened to someone else, before they replaced the engine, supposedly).

So, Dracula on Netflix is really good so far (one hour and a half episode/movie down, two to go).

Especially their choice for Dracula.

Also, if you get Disney+ you gotta check out Kim Possible!

So much comedic talent doing the voices on that show, it's amazingly well done (I'd put it second to Gravity Falls as far as favorite Disney show).

I've heard enough good things that this is the plan, but we can't actually watch D+ on a tv, and have a rule against such things in the bed room, leaving the wife and I crowded around our (small, old, but flat-screen!, 2000-ish monitor) or an iDevice. Because of furniture placement (and extremely limited plug options) that leaves my wonderful lady with a crick in her neck after too much time. So we're working on it, and have plans to, but must think about when/how a little more.

It gets better. MUCH better. And does an excellent job of tying the whole "Disney afternoon animated universe" stuff together. DuckTales, Darkwing Duck, TailSpin, Goof Troop, Gummi Bears, all that stuff technically takes place in the same world, just different locations and time periods, and the new DT ties them all together even more strongly.

Awesome!

My brother-in-law got me a box of mochi for Christmas - curious, he got another for himself, too. He tried one - the sesemi Mochi - and thought he'd done a terrible job, as it was kind of bland and disappointing (technically sweet, but just not very great).

When I got it, I tried the same and somewhat agreed - it was good enough to eat (he was concerned I'd hate it), but when I tried the white powder mochi the whole thing was almost painfully sweet (but good), and the brown powder mochi (look, I don't know the names) was on point. That brings memories of childhood.

Keeping jerry can with some spare gasoline (or emptied and stashed for an inevitable trek to go look for more when you'll run out of fuel in the middle road) wasn't an option, it was a base necessity of driving.

Ah! And who could forget, "turn it off at the top of the hill; turn it back on at the bottom" to save gas? (Nevermind that that actually doesn't work because of the increased fuel consumption that comes with startup; it was common practice. Second most harrowing car ride I've ever taken, after the madness that was NYC. Definitely the coldest, though.)

Okay, that's a lie - I was in Lithuania for years. It was only one of the coldest.

There is no Polish contribution to that, it's just that the Mouse cared not about us much, presumably viewing us as a secondary area of expansion.

It's really rather amazing how quickly a company can destroy everyone's trust in it.

We just got our annual Global IT survey. Google Chrome is no longer listed as a recommended browser.

Just 5 years ago, Chrome was the gold standard of a lightweight standards-compliant browser. Now it's seen as a data privacy nightmare that should no longer be used for any reason.

Nice job, Google!

(On the other hand, our Global IT says, "Use Firefox or IE". Any IT department that is still recommending Internet Explorer for anything deserves to be globally terminated. And maybe not even in a job sense...)

A few years later, I was proud to complete my collection of ALL of Disney's animated films when I got an imported Japanese laserdisc of Song of the South.

(And yes, there is nothing quite so hilarious as the poor Japanese actor trying to voice Uncle Remus as low as he can possibly go, then have Uncle Remus break into song (they used the original audio, not Japanese translations) and think, "Wow, is James Baskett only one octave lower than his Japanese dub, or is it two?")

<Ignoring the obviously dated and historical/racial issues around Song of the South.>

It's been a long time since I heard James Baskett singing in that, and I've never heard the Japanese dub, but I wouldn't be shocked at all if it's 2 octaves.

Man, James Baskett is a treasure. His voice is truly a wonder of human ability.

LOL, Before Katrina, a friend wanted a copy of Song Of the South. So he ordered a PAL tape version from Europe.

(FYI- PAL was the same size cassette as VHS, but in European format. The two will not play on each others decks, you have to use VHS or PAL machines respectively)
Since I worked at an AV company, and had access to various devices, he sent it to me, and I ran him (and myself) several copies.
:)
It is the one in our collection that did not come directly from the Disney store. So it looked a little out of place when they were all lined up on the shelves.

"Interesting" story: Being slightly obsessive-compulsive, I have never in my lifetime run out of gas... except ONCE that taught me something very interesting:

I was driving the family home from Disneyland late one night, and the "near empty" warning came on less than 100 miles from home. I was "hypermiling" (going for gas mileage instead of speed) so I figured I was fine, since I didn't want to risk waking up the rest of the family by stopping for gas. I made it to the Eastshore freeway (less than 6 miles to go) before all the lights on the dash went on, the engine died, and I realized I was out of gas.

Except...
...in spite of the owner's manual telling you the Prius battery is only good for 1/4 mile after the engine dies, I was able to drive at freeway speed to the next exit, get off, and drive to the nearest gas station, all on battery power.

I was... pleased.

(Frozen mochi is mochi wrapped around ice cream, whereas "regular" mochi is mochi wrapped around (as GothBard puts it), "Something more room-temperature-friendly.")

Heresy! All mochi is delicious!

Hrm, didn't know about the Chrome fall-from-grace thing.

I use Firefox exclusively on any machine that comes through my home. BUT I think the public school convinced the kids that Chrome is the next wonder of the world, and my son likes/uses it now. As does my wife on her work machine now that I think of it.

I must inform them of this terrible danger they have exposed us to!
;P

FYI- As far as I know/care, IE's one and ONLY reason to exist on this planet plane of existence is,... to download Firefox.

"I have spoken."

Unfortunately...in the medical and banking areas...far too many of our clients have not bothered to update their websites and we're still stuck with hanging on to IE.

Of course, the next question is how many modern browsers are good enough for enterprise use and also don't use the Chromium engine under the hood?

Oi. memories.

Once, LOOOOOONG ago, when I was but a wee wizard, my dad and I (my dad mostly) dropped the gas tank on my '72 Chevy Impala to clean it out. (Supposedly car was having some trouble related to debris from the gas tank.?)

Dropping it was annoying as it was large and unwieldy, but actually not that difficult, (2 metal straps, 2 bolts each, held up the tank. This was in our driveway, not at any actual repair location.)

Lacking proper garage-type tools, (like a lift of any kind!) Getting it back UP was on a different scale of pain-in-the-youknowwhat though. Dad sadly was always far more "Shade Tree" than he was "Mechanic", and quickly grew frustrated. He determined that making sure the gas-gauge float was properly re-mounted to the tank was far too much trouble. So he didn't. Sure enough, we finally got the !@#$%^ tank back up and on, and the gas gauge didn't work. Dad refused to drop the tank again to re-attach it properly.

Young Wizard- "But Dad! I'm going to need to know when to put more gas in the car!"

Dad- "Just pay attention to when you gas up and how much your driving. You'll be fine."

Young Wizard- Fills up gas tank. 3 days later runs out of gas getting on expressway. (The entrance was right outside our neighborhood. I just walked back home.)
Yes. I got VERY good at determining how much gas I had used after that.
So far, hasn't happened to me (again) since.

I swear, there's, "I frequently run 20-30 minutes late," and there's, "I flake for no discernible reason for days on end."

Our contractor falls well into the latter category. Our fireplace was supposed to be done on Monday or Tuesday. He didn't show up until Wednesday, took the measurements he needed, and vanished.

I'm really getting seriously p****d at his lack of communication and his inability to show, but at the moment it's not really feasible to fire him and hire someone else with much of the stuff we need sitting in his truck (for example, the replacement backing for the fireplace), but at a certain point it goes from "overscheduled" to "WTF, man?", and our contractor has jumped the line far, far into, "Pretty much ready to give up."

He does amazing work when he shows up, but on Wednesday GothBard had to take the entire morning off work to meet with him (said he'd be here at 8:30, didn't show 'til 11), and both yesterday and today he said he'd show and didn't.

"I'm busy. I won't be there until Monday," is fine.
"I'll be there tomorrow," every single day until Monday is not.

EDIT: Ranting on FaWtL for the win! Quite literally 6 minutes after I posted he texted that he's on his way right now. I mean, I'll believe it when I see it, but still...
