I'm working on a Friday night. This is not supposed to happen. I am displeased.

The nekkidity might be supposed to happen.

I would like to see the bike riding bear. He'd be a YouTube sensation.

Just made a new personal best on my 5k. 27:59. However my weight lifting was singularly awful today. I suppose I'm not up to doing 20 kg weights on clean and press/shoulder press, or there was that old saying that weights should ALWAYS be done before cardio. Which I clearly didn't.

You see if you can reach the bar you wonder if you used your hindpaws to push yourself up some rather then forepaws and back. I tried to avoid using my hindpaws to push off.

Today, the HEMA club I go to on Monday held its first ever tournament event, for which the Big Beasts of the UK scene came up to show us what's what. I was only in the rapier tournament, and did alright - joint fourth, which I was pretty pleased with given the calibre of the participants. There was also a sabre and a longsword competition, but I wasn't a competitor in those - I helped judge (badly) and kept score instead.

Free Comic Book Day!
We *finally* went into the neighborhood comic shop a mile or so down the street, only nine months after moving here. It's pretty nice, they have a great kids' section, and the staff are downright friendly. I let the kids pick out a graphic novel to share (I only had ten bucks) and they got three free comics. (A Lumberjanes, a Star Wars, and some undersea thing.)
Then I wrote the comic shop a good review on FB, because it matters.

In other news, I bought an antique doughnut cutter for 25 cents at the church garage sale this morning. After researching recipes, I now have a batch of dough on the rise for breakfast tomorrow morning. I've only ever made cake-style doughnuts, not raised doughnuts. This will be fun.

Cake v raised? What's the difference?

Had a very weird couple of conversations with my boss this week.

First he says "Tequila, you've got to get better at [job task], I don't know how long I'm going to be here."

Then later we get talking about death, I mention "sleeping the long sleep," and he's awestruck by the metaphor's profundity.

Then even later I make the mistake of complimenting his intelligence -- it was a tepid compliment, but he has some kind of complex -- and he invites me and Mrs Sunrise over to his place sometime. *shudder*

So either he's contemplating his mortality or...he's getting promoted? Retiring? He's only in his 50s, and a workaholic.

So, because I'm a FAWTL rebel I'm about to break a FAWTL taboo that so far I haven't touched. I find religion suuuper interesting, and I finally got around to read an expert's survey of the world's biggest eight. I don't think anyone will find this offensive, but spoilers for religion:

Spoiler:
The book I read is Stephen Prothero's God is Not One, and the theme of the book is to push back agains the popular notion that all religions are just "different paths up the same mountain." He goes into the history of each religion, major sects, cosmologies, and generally lays them out for those of us who don't have the time and energy to read a bunch of old books.

The thing I find most useful is his basic way of comparing and contrasting religions; of course all big religions are varied and nuanced, but he boils each of them down to four things:

-- A problem
-- A solution to that problem
-- A means of achieving that solution
-- And exemplars who demonstrate that achievement

So for example, the christian problem is sin, the solution is salvation, the means is faith and/or works, and the exemplars are either saints or regular exemplary christians. Every other religion has a totally different problem and solution, which ties back into the author's theme of different gods, different religions.

He also says, and this really surprised me as someone living in a christian-majority nation my entire life; that christianity really prioritizes belief and orthodoxy in a way that other religions don't. Other religions have their own myths of course (with few exceptions), but other religions emphasize the practice of religion over the pursuit of belief and orthodoxy. Not sure how seriously to take this claim. It's hard to believe, but like I said, I live in a christian-majority nation.

I LOVE broccoli.

The Exchange

Broccoli is all well and fun, until you get a vitamin A overdose. Considering I start my day with 30g of sweet red peppers (326upg/700upg) a day on my pizza/spinach and a glass of milk(120 upg/700upg)...its quite a real possibility. Especially since I'm fond of jackfruits, mangoes and hami melons.

700 upg is minimum requirement, >2300 is considered overdosing.

Spoiler:
He's not wrong.

If you look closely at Christianity and its edicts and taboos, the basic concept regarding wrongdoing can be summarized as "even the most heinous crime can be forgiven so long as one is willing to confess the sin, believe in the sacrificial power of Jesus's death, and change their behavior for the better". Some denominations add a step or two here or there, but that's the core concept.

However, the Christian scripture is extremely explicit that there is one exception to this rule. The one unforgivable sin is disbelief in - sometimes worded as blasphemy and/or denial of - God or members of his godhead/trinity.

The simple reason is rather easy to see: as acquiring forgiveness requires belief in the divine power to grant that forgiveness and the holy sacrifice to absolve humanity of its wrongdoings, a lack of that belief renders all attempts to acquire absolution moot.

As such, since every single other crime - from jaywalking to genocide - can be forgiven through stalwart belief and a desire to change one's ways, the most important factor in the faith by definition must be belief itself.

*waves* Hello, I'm back! And finally finished reading the 10k+ posts I had missed since December....yeah, I know, I know. I didn't have to read them all, but come on! I've read every FaWtL post since the first thread! That's the thread that finally got me to stop lurking and start posting regularly in the first place! Not gonna stop now! :P

I'd love to say I have a great excuse, but really it just turns out you can't rush recovery after a mental breakdown, so I had to take some time away from the boards. I did stay on twitter, but that's cause it's a different group that I interact with there. More folks going through the same crap I am kinda thing. Anyhow, if you want to connect with me there feel free, but honestly I mostly just post cat pics. ^.^

Oh, and Mort, grats on reaching so many of your fitness and weight goals! Great job!!! You look good and I'm really happy for you that you're feeling good too! :)

That said, I'm gonna preemptively ask that you not aim any of the diet and fitness advice my way. I know it comes from a place of love, but my connective tissue disorder means I'm not playing by the same set of rules in those arenas and I can't guarantee that I won't snap if you try to give me advice when I'm having a bad day with lots of pain and dislocations, so figured I'd try and head it off beforehand so we can just skip the awkward argument and hurt feelings ^.^

Doughnuts turned out well. I used this recipe as a jumping off point, but substituted 1/2 tsp of Penzey's Spices Baking Spice for the 1/4 tsp nutmeg (I've had good results with it with my cake-style doughnuts) and then did *not* glaze them, just tossed them into a paper grocery sack with a bunch of plain granulated sugar and shook the heck out of it.

Have you used Bob's Red Mill 1-to-1 GF baking flour?
I've been baking gluten/dairy/sugar/yeast free quite a bit now that I have to cook for my mother-in-law on holidays, and I've had some pretty good results with it... it's my favorite GF product so far (which is to say it's the only one I've used that I don't loathe and purchase willingly).

I really hope they can fix my oven today so it doesn't take one person to load a pizza and a second person to hold the door open. My BF asked me why I didn't get a new one, firstly since its built in, I need to find one with the same dimensions, and next I don't want to have to reaclimatize to a new oven.

LM - can you make bread in an oven or do you need a fancy bread oven with sprinklers or whatever?

This is my oven

I like the bob’s red mill flour a lot and use it for savory items, but usually find cup4cup works better for sweet stuff like muffins or cookies. But when I used cup4cup to make doughnuts it was a disaster. I’ll have to try again with the bob’s red mill and see if that works better

AP stands for advanced placement. So there are certain high school classes that cover the same materials as low level college classes, and if you pay a fee to take the AP test and get a good enough score then you can get credit for the class when you go to college. Basically it saves a lot on tuition for prereqs later on. But the high school course + AP test is actually a lot harder than taking the college course. Mostly due to excess oversight I think, whereas the prof has more leeway in the college course.
