I keep having to take breaks in digesting the commentary.

I don't want to toot the horn of the class of 2011 too hard, but I'd just like to point out, in past years the 'villain' rounds have gone up with nothing but standard fanfare.

Our villains, on the other hand, were apparently involved in devious behind the scenes schemes and killed the website for hours in an attempt to hide their vileness from the world.

Well done, folks!

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 8 , Dedicated Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 7, Dedicated Voter Season 8 aka John Benbo

I think that was the extra twist to the round. Tell us they'd be up at five and kill the sites for a few hours to watch us sweat! You notice how they have our towns up now? Hidden cameras, my friends, hidden cameras.

I take full responsibility for the site being down. I had plans to be out all night, so knew I wouldn't be able to read the comments on my entry until late, so I figured, why let everyone else read theirs if I couldn't read mine until later? :)

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 8 , Dedicated Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 7, Dedicated Voter Season 8 aka John Benbo

Just finished reading them all. Good work everyone! In honor of our villains as AC/DC says, "Forget about the check, we'll get Hell to pay. Have a drink on me!"

Port Elizabeth? Though I don't hide that I once lived there, it does require a bit of digging to find that out (especially since I told Ross that I stay in Durban). Paizo spy network?

Exactly. Though if they are ever caught, they just claim they are LARPing the new Ninja class as a playtest. I've been wondering why my outdoor motion detector hasn't been coming on. Better check it for shurikens.

I wondered why that pizza I ordered in during the Superbowl was delivered by a guy wrapped in black who vanished in a puff of smoke. Huh.

And I notice that Ethan gets away with just being from 'Ireland'.

The Emerald Isle: Free of snakes, wolves, and, apparently, ninja.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4 aka Scipion del Ferro

Haha, I saw that too.

I do have to say, I like seeing "Rochester, NH" up by my name. The last time Rochester was in the news was during the primaries when some crazy guy strapped flares to his chest and threatened to blow up Hillary Clinton's campaign HQ in Rochester. I had helicopters flying over my house. So, I like giving some positive recognition to my hometown.

I'm living in Maynooth, County Kildare, if people want to post it up.

Pretty nice place actually, its a college town about 20 minutes outside of Dublin. Its on the train line, the old side of campus has some really nice 18th and 19th century architecture, and there is a ruined castle in the middle of town. The castle actually got the top blown off of it during a siege in the 16th century. Red hot cannonball hit the powder magazine in the keep. Must've been some pretty amazing fireworks.

I just wanted to say good luck in the voting to everyone. Now that it is under way, I think I'm going to take a few days off from the boards, rest and relax since there's nothing I can do until the results come out. Last round, I had the bad habit of checking in every five minutes. Trying to detox myself this round from the boards. So, good luck everyone!

A wise policy. We'll see if I have the force of will to do the same!

As you have now noticed, sleep is a precious commodity just before a deadline. :-)

During the competition, I tried to make sure I had a good chance to catch up between rounds.

Strangely, I like to take a nap to find my inspiration. If I'm up and about I'm too tempted with TV and Internet and the like. When I lie down though, I can just let thoughts themselves roll around and see what I come up with.

I accomplish a similar state while playing older console video games. For example, Dark Cloud 2 has been this contest's meditative aid.

I concur with the napping for ideas philosophy, but that's mostly because I seem to toss and turn at night if I don't have a good brainstorming nap...

That is the exact reason why I'm usually up so late most nights.

Im with the "coffee and classical" school of brainstorming myself. Despite the coffee though this often becomes a "classical and napping" trance.

(edited, polished)
And my Round 3 reviews of the top 16 are now done. To address a couple of remarks to the top 16:
First the stick, and I must say that a number of you seem to have done your best to saw yourselves off at the knees, stab yourselves in the feet, or otherwise attempt to hamstring yourselves by putting forward purported villains like those. Whilst this is deeply entertaining to watch (from a CE aligned succubus perspective) you need to up your games considerably if the voters do put you in the top eight and you desire to go on to make the top four (and the others who make the top eight can't afford to rest on their laurels either). Pay attention to details - or at least to ones crucial to your entries.
Now the consolatory carrot. You did all make the top sixteen of RPGSuperstar out of hundreds of entrants, and congratulations on those grounds.
I may or may not be round with individual valedictory posts once the vote result is known, depending on if I have the time.
Hoping that you have found my comments at times Helpful.

Yours,

Ask A RPGSupersuccubus.
Postscript:
And remember, you aren't out until the votes are all in - unless of course you do something silly like post a response anywhere which invites and results in your disqualification... Yes the judges may have said some pretty nasty things. Some of the other posters (myself included) may have done so. But for now, you have to sit on your hands and bide your time, as the results aren't yet certain. ;)

Edit:
And for those in need of some method to vent before the polls close, I'd recommend finding a cleric of Asmodeus and making his or her life a misery. Or plan a thirteen course dinner party and draw up an 'ideal' seating plan for it... :)

Then again if I don't make the cut, I don't need to make the cuts. So I'm saving that until after Tuesday.

I'm finding it emotionally difficult to work on my entry, and maybe that's what your experiencing too. My villain got savaged in the commentary, so my hope for advancement is weak, but I still have to write on as if I'm going to pull it through. (Hate to be at a double disadvantage for next round, ya know?) I'm about halfway done with my round 4 at this point, but if Tuesday delivers good news, that'll definately change the mood with which I work on it.

But nobody told us "being a superstar" would be easy! I have to say, having people follow my entries round-to-round is the most encouraging thing, and I am determined to not disappoint those that put their expectation in me. Hope I get a shot to do that!

So, when this contest is over, winning or not, what are people going to do with their free time? In addition to this contest, I'm taking the most work intensive class of my grad degree. Have to say this has been the most exciting and demanding winter in a long time.

I'll actually be starting a new job at a call center of some sort. A month and a half of unemployment is good enough for me, thank you.

I'll admit that when Neil said the critism was going to be harsh, I didn't really beleive him. But my entries don't seem to get too much conversation overall from the larger public. So I really can't say. There is hope yet as far as I can see.

One of the hardest things to deal with in this contest is what happens when your stuff gets panned or significantly critiqued, whether by the judges or the voting public. And it doesn't get any easier once the the competition gets left behind and you're freelancing for real. You'll still live and die on the feedback of others and how well they receive your stuff. So, yet again, RPG Superstar serves as an excellent crucible through which all competitors must pass. And, those who withstand the fire get to come out on the other side all the more prepared.

Also, keep in mind, it's so very easy to go through life when everything's sunshine and roses. But your mettle is much better tested and shaped by the trials you undergo. Even if the outcome proves far worse than you'd planned or intended, it's not so much about how far you tumble and fall. Rather, it's about how high you bounce back.

Food for thought,
--Neil

Well it took four bounces down to get this high, so if I go back down I'll just go back up higher. :)

It's tough but helpful when you have a set length like that. When I write screenplays, I have to stick to 120 page length which is hard, but it also helps provide me with structure and keeps me sticking to my story. I struggle more with novel writing because there is no word/page limit and so without that tight structure, I sometimes wander off...

Does Canada have an East Coast/West Coast thing like the U.S.? Like in New York City people are ruder but more honest, while in L.A., the stereotype is that everyone is really nice but faking it.

We've also got a north coast...*thinks* The west coast is filled with liberal hippies and the east coast is filled with fishermen that talk with thick accents. AND the north coast is ruled by polar bears. That's as about as stereotypical as I can think of.

Amid this rant is the explanation of how Canada works. Go to 2:22 of the rant and it will be explained.

And I may have to look into getting a new scanner as well. Or maybe just a printer scanner combo.

The last couple of weeks, I've been watching a SyFy channel show called "Face-Off." It's a contest between make-up artists. I watch the previous week's repeat on Tuesday nights (am) while doing my ironing. Since the RPG Superstar reveal is on Tuesdays, I kind of feel for the contestants as they get critiqued by the judges. It's kind of like "Yeah, I know the anxiety you're feeling."

Contributor, RPG Superstar 2009, RPG Superstar Judgernaut

Interestingly enough, I watched the same show this weekend. And, it looks like the upcoming episode is going to require each of the make-up and special effects artists to "design a villain"...

Clearly, they're just capitalizing on the success of RPG Superstar. :-D

Some are just apt at seeing good ideas. I haven't gotten much media of late. I rented "Let Me In" to watch like a week ago. I think I'll throw it in tonight after work.

Do I ever love and despise morning shifts. On the one hand, I'll arrive home EXACTLY when the winners of this round will be announced. On the other, I had to get up at 6 Am to be at work for 8 Am.
