Just out of interest, anyone else going to be at Dreamation this weekend?

I made my will save, but I'm still taking half damage (new rule!). I'm only looking at the this thread.

I hadn't heard of Dreamation, so I looked it up. It looks pretty cool. I usually don't get out to cons but I do want to hit up GenCon sometime in my life. Anyone of the Top 32 thinking of going to Paizocon this year? I was thinking about it but my friends can't do it so I would end up going stag if I did.

Dreamation is a new one for me too (I'll have to check it out). I went to GenCon for the first time last year, and I can't wait to go again. What a blast! I might be visiting some relatives out near PaizoCon and if so, I will be trying hard to go this year.

Unfortunately, the way grad school works, I'm in school pretty much year around so getting out and doing anything is difficult. Paizocon is still up in the air. My friend's brother lives out there and his wife is expecting their first child around the same time as Paizocon, so if the two dates collide, my friend would be going up that way. But we'll see.

Okay, I've gone through the entries, using my own grid for comments. It goes something like this:

Does the villain match the location/encounter/minions

Did anyone jam a villain in an inappropriate location, or give him/her odd minions?

Is the location cool?

Do I like the location? Would I use it out of context?

Is the encounter fun/interesting?

Would I run? Would it work?

Anything else?

Any other comments I had- map, game history, anything.

I'm a little sad that nobody chose to use Chittik in all his diminutive glory, but I'm glad to see some really neat stuff was done.

That would be one of my pieces of advice for next year's contestants. Make sure you got time to do the contest. Working on entries takes up a lot of time and you should make sure you have that time.

I'm going to shout it again, especially for those potentially in the Top 4:

Take the time off work that you will need for this competition

I took the entire week off for the final round last year. It really helped. I hope that this advice helps.

I don't think its sadistic at all. Assuming I am fortunate enough to advance to the next round, having a pre-determined APL to design for is one fewer design decision to make. It also puts one of my three possibilities I've been considering out of the running, which also helps narrow down exactly where I should be focusing my writing/thinking.

So for once the twist helps instead of hurts (for me, anyway)!

I agree with Ethan. I'm very happy with the "twist." A few weeks ago when I first started thinking about my pitch if I got/get to do it, I went through the catalog of Pathfinder modules and I don't recall seeing any at the level 4 range. Whether I win or lose, I will be happy to see a module at this level.

And done (Round 4).

From a succubus perspective it looks sadistic; but if you've lost nothing by it and it has ended up helping you then all the better for you... ;)

Yeah, I'll be referring to the second books of the Adventure paths.

Serpent's Skull will be a good one then because the first book assumes the PCs to be 4th level when they do the final encounter and book two opens up with some encounters for 4th level characters.

Most of the 2nd books are in the right level range. Of course, that is like looking at the second tier of a wedding cake and trying to figure out how to bake it.

'Sadistic' isn't the right word, since I doubt the judges are now giggling to themselves while holding aloft brandy snifters and Cuban cigars while we scramble. Still, that would be the end of the notes and outline for the 'perfect adventure' I've been sitting on and developing for the past year.
Oh, well, spontaneity = fun, right?

I'm holding aloft a cigar right now, though not Cuban. I wanted to do a lower level adventure, so I think it's great and like Sean says, it will keep everyone on a the same playing field. Obviously we can't go into adventure specifics now, but I think the top 4 will find they have a lot of room to be creative. And I'm glad it's 4th instead of 1st level which is probably one of the most difficult to write for or really high level.

You, sir, are a great man to be able to roll with this... :) Coming after your firebird appreciation entry, I am now doubly grieved that my policy of strict neutrality does not permit me to vote.

Whatever the alias has or hasn't said from a succubus perspective (and she is quite convinced that the judges are sitting round giggling and indulging so far as their health permits... it's what a lot of the abyssal lords she knows would be doing right now) your entries, humour, and wit have consistently illuminated this contest. Whilst trying to find something to put down from the RPGSupersuccubus' perspective has been hard work for some entries, you have always left some inspiration I could swiftly latch onto.
I hope that I shall not have to put fingers to keyboard to scribe your RPGSuperstar obituary quite yet.

Good luck guys, level 3-4 adventures can be a lot of fun. At least you know now, rather than at the same time the Top 4 are announced. While you won't have to detail every encounter, keep in mind the CR issues that cropped up this round. Also remember what level 4 adventurers are and aren't capable of. And, of course, make it awesome :-)

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 8 , Dedicated Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 7, Dedicated Voter Season 8 aka John Benbo

Good luck to my competitors tomorrow. I think that 4th spot is going to be really close. Looking at last year's exit poll, Matt was in fifth but ended up taking the 4th spot. Just about anything is possible tomorrow. I say "just about" because unless someone uses a wish spell for me, I won't be making the cut. However, at least being in last place, I can only be surprised tomorrow :)! Good luck, guys.

Contributor, RPG Superstar 2010 , Dedicated Voter Season 6, Dedicated Voter Season 7, Dedicated Voter Season 8, Dedicated Voter Season 9

Yep, don't trust the exit poll too much. It's only a small sample of the people who voted. Whatever happens tomorrow I'll be happy to play or GM a PFS module written by any of you.

Also remember that there are a lot of people who contribute to/or work for Paizo that used their placing in RPG Superstar as a springboard into the industry. I've noticed some of the monsters in the Serpent's Skull Adventure Path had Jesse Benner's (Top 8 2010) name on them.

You certainly don't have to be an RPG Superstar to get a shot at a Pathfinder Society Scenario *link*

And there are plenty of folks that got published 'the old fashioned way' - by submitting stuff, getting the reject letters and then submitting some more. (You can still do this too!) :-)

Hah! But all top 32+ members have got published (or at least darned closer to it than the rest of us get) in a sense. They submitted stuff to Paizo (their items) and were accepted. And at some point in the dim and distant future something they put in a RPGSuperstar entry may show up in a future Paizo product... I keep tripping over references to the first contest in Cities of Golarion.

Okay, back on topic, I have one of Ask A RPGSupersuccubus' end of Round 4 posts up (which I had been pondering all day) but right now am too tired to get on with the others for those who didn't make the top four. Further posts will follow once I am less fatigued. (Hmm... That almost read like a threat. :-? )
And congratulations to those who did make the last Round this time. For you the agony goes on for a little while longer...

And that's all she wrote for me. The disappointment at losing out is pretty much cancelled out by the feeling of relief at not having to finish off my adventure proposal in the next couple of weeks :)

Once again, I'd like to thank all the judges and the voters for letting me have this experience and for letting me share my work with you. It really is quite an incredible thing to get this level of feedback and input from the designers and players (two groups that aren't mutually exclusive!) of your favorite game on your work within the shared space that is Pathfinder.

Cody, Jerall, Sam, and Sean, best of luck moving forward. You have all consistently produced some of the best material in the competition and, from what interaction we have had on the forums, I couldn't have lost to a friendlier or more professional group of people. The Houndmaster, the Gentleman Knave, Lady Rosiline, and the Dollhouse are all pieces of work that I think really stand above the rest of the competition and make me excited to see what comes out in the next round. Don't disappoint!

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 8 , Dedicated Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 7, Dedicated Voter Season 8 aka John Benbo

Sorry, I'm late to the party but I wanted to have a beer in my hand first. I didn't think the top 4 was in doubt and richly deserved. Congrats, guys! I'm very excited to see your adventure proposals. Now that I don't have to worry about DQing myself, I think having a level 4 baseline is a great idea. So many classic fantasy monsters (orcs, goblins, ogres, lizardmen, minotaurs, etc.) that are still applicable at this level. So, a lot of design choices! Good luck in your proposals.

And I'll probably still be lurking around this thread. I get bored easy and it is the Top 32 Guildhall (can't kick me out yet!) :)

I'd love to throw it out there- there's a few of us that can build magic items... even if we don't have the chops to go all the way in a design contest. Any multi-year entrant I think would have proven that, if nothing else? *Hint, hint, pretty please?*

Week and half? If you win, Sean, don't expect to get any sleep. Deadlines, man, deadlines. You want don't Spicer, Moreland, and Reynolds kicking in your door as you lie slumped over your keyboard trying to pump out that module. And why do you think James Jacobs avatar is a T-Rex? Because he is a T-Rex, from another dimension, and he gets his 20,000 words or else.

I'd personally bet money that at least one of the four eligible repeat contestants from this year will be a threepeat offender for RPGSS '12. (No pressure or anything, guys!) I'd wager even more that we'll see other contestants from this year's batch repeat next year as well. Seriously, it's amazing how much you can learn from even one or two rounds here.

An adventure for 4th level party should be a lot of fun. There are so many great low CR creatures I'm almost sorry my group is pushing 10th level now. I'd love to write something low-rent like this, and maybe next year I'll have a chance. I both envy and pity you top four (all of who got my votes by the way) as you seem to be la-creme this year, and will likely all provide deserving entries.

4th level is an interesting time in a PC's life, they're starting to become confident in their roles. Eagerly awaiting the day when they can cast fireball and fly, yet still soft enough that a moderate fall could kill them. It's a time of terror and hope for them, I expect you to show them both of these things.

I've written a few thoughts and tips that I hope will help each of the Top 4.

One piece of advice for all four of you: think really carefully before you go '... of the ...' for your title, I suspect the judges are going to real tetchy about that, this year. :-)
Best of luck to all.

Ah, I remember just a few months ago when my group was 4th level. They had the hardest time with 2 CR 2 Skeleton Champions, yet walked over 2 CR 4 Cairn Wights. 4th level PCs are like a bunch of gawky teenagers, their bodies are changing so they aren't quite adults yet but no longer children...

Top 4- You're all still probably busily banging away at your keyboards. Just wanted to wish you luck. I'm looking forward to see what you guys will submit. The only two PF modules I own (besides APs) are Superstar winners. I can tell from previous entries the enthusiasm and creativity that went into the pitches and there are a lot of good ones that never got made (Jim Grove's from last year I thought was really great and I would have been hard pressed between that and CotED). If you got any words left, I would love to see me some orcs. Lots of orcs, rooms full of them, lined up for the killing :).

RPG Superstar 2011 aka Ignotus

Well, I pressed submit. No going back now.

It's been a bit of a rough ride. I had 80% of what could probably have been anywhere from an 8-12th level adventure planned out when the 4th level requirement was announced. I was at Dreamation at the time, so I couldn't really do anything besides spaz out and flip through Pathfinder sourcebooks in the dealer's room.

Then I made the mistake of thinking that the deadline was last Friday, and was killing myself to get everything done. I was about a third of the way in on Thursday night when a friend on IM pointed out the actual deadline. Whoops. On the plus side, freaking out last week meant this week was sane enough for me to actually run my Kingmaker game for the first time in a month.

Anyway, it's in now. I'm excited to see what Jerall, Sean, and Cody have cooking. It's been a pleasure matching wits with you (all 31 of you, in fact), and spurring each other onward to make cool stuff. It's going to be a looooong wait till tuesday evening. Time to remember all the stuff I do for fun normally...

And to the judges: morituri te salutant!

DONE.
Hopefully it doesn't suck, but right now I can't even care about that because the burden is off. my. shoulders. God, I can actually watch a TV show without my conscience nagging at me that I should be using the time to tweak my entry. Or read a book! Oh, books. I've had to avoid them even more than TV, and at least two ones that I want to read have come out since this round started. (New Patrick Rothfuss! And new Steven Erikson!) Thank goodness GRRM's new book isn't till summer, because that would have broken my will like an elephant sitting on plywood.
Best of luck, guys. May the best man claim the title.

Man, stick figure, or elephant. I don't know what I'm going to do when "Dances with Dragons" comes out. I look forward to Tuesday. Submissions will go live 5pm my time and finally this Tuesday, unlike every other Tuesday this year, I don't have my stupid panel at work from 4pm-8pm. So at 5pm, I can close my office door, blow up the inflatable dummy to make it look like I'm having a meeting and read all the pitches.

Hey, fellow finalists- Just noticed the 'Thank you for submitting! Your entry was received x hours ago...' text vanished from the main page. I know it was there this morning after I submitted, so I was just wondering if it went poof for you guys as well? Otherwise I might start worrying. :-)

Yep, gone for me too.

That's ok, we don't need it anymore. I can go back to answering questions in the Advice and Rules forums.

Exciting stuff guys, I'm really looking forward to it all. I gotta say, when I dropped out of the running my free-time resulted in an explosion of advancements in my other RP projects. My home campaign started writing itself, my new setting ideas finally put themselves on paper, my quality of artwork shot up. It's been an awesome experience, I still seem to be creatively firing on all cylinders and am reaping huge rewards because of it.

I'm a little bummed that you guys won't be seeing my adventure proposal, though I guess there's no harm in detailing it after voting. I had most of it cued up for 10th level-ish, so the 4th level cap would have been a bit of a curve ball, but would really only take the big-flash out of the story. I definitely intend on writing it, if only for my own enjoyment, and perhaps I'll outline it for you guys, since I'll probably have another idea that I'm in love with in the event that I'm in for next year. We shall see.

Best of luck to you four who are still in! We're all expecting great things, and you have yet to disappoint.

Yeah, I've felt that kick in the pants to finally polish up my Pathfinder Society queries (and start running some Society games... finally). Plus I've been reviewing the Kobold Quarterly guidelines, and looking at Wayfinder, and...

I know the feeling.
