It really depends. If it is a targeting burst effect than you suffer major penulties for being blind. It it is a general area affect, it is a bit of a DM's call because we are not familiar with the terrain and you can not tell who has moved within the area you want to target.

For something like Fireball, you actually send out a tiny little ball tht explodes on contact, so it is very difficult to get that little ball where you need it to be exactly and detonate in the actual area you want. Really up to what you want to cast and the DM.

Lame! Someone help me with a rule right quick. Do I have to be able to see to cast an area effect spell? (Specifically a burst spell.) I can't find it mentioned in the book.

You can cast an AoE while blind, but you have to know where to place it. It is not covered how you would do so in the book, so it is up to the DM to decide how you can place without accidentally misjudging the distance. Most likely he will require die rolls and the spell will be off as far as centering.

Edit:What do the different colored tiles on the map represent

Here is DM Barcas' description of the arena.

Arena description

RHYOL THE VOLCANO :: HP 42/76 :: AC 19 CMD 22 :: Fort +13 Ref +7 Will +3 :: Perception +11 (Tremor 60; Darkvision 60) :: Conditions: none

Round 1; Initiative 12

Well, I'd like to try a fireball, anyway. I'll go ahead and roll damage and the intended location (as Kizzle would have seen it before being blinded), and Barcas, let me know whatever hoops you want me to jump through to hit the target point.

"DAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!"

The surprisingly tall, nearly naked but scale-covered gnome lets out a frustrated roar as the motes explode into his eyes... 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 copies of himself crying out with him. The six dragon-gnomes - all armed with a rod in one hand and a staff in the other - stumble out of the starting zone (to B-14) and attempt to return fire on his enemies, and they hurl a small bead of flame that crosses the arena, aiming for to catch the emperor in the blast. Trying to target the bottom-right corner of V-13.

Spellcraft DC18 - but i'm guessing you know what it is:
Fireball

Fire Damage 9d6 + 9 ⇒ (6, 3, 1, 5, 4, 1, 3, 4, 3) + 9 = 39.

The crowd cheers and whoops at Saria's ditty, with one overexcited fan screaming, "OH SNAP!" at the top of his lungs.

You can speak at will, just don't write a soliloquy.

To move something on the map, make sure you are signed in, then select your picture. Once selected, you can grab it at the top and move it around.

For spells with obvious visual effects, reduce the DC of the Spellcraft roll by 5.

The waterfall is not coming down with much force, so it doesn't offer much more than visual cover.

You don't have to be able to see, but your last-known information will rapidly become unreliable. From your current position, you have to be fairly accurate to clear the walls directly in front of you. You'll have a 25% chance to hit the wall (which might hit you), a 25% chance to shoot too high and miss entirely, and a 50% chance to be reasonably accurate.

The dark blue is a waterfall from the ceiling. The light blue is a lake of unknown depth. The dark gray is 5' walls. The light gray is 10' pits.

RHYOL THE VOLCANO :: HP 42/76 :: AC 19 CMD 22 :: Fort +13 Ref +7 Will +3 :: Perception +11 (Tremor 60; Darkvision 60) :: Conditions: none

25% to bypass the wall 1d100 ⇒ 75
25% to shoot too high 1d100 ⇒ 39
50% to be "reasonably accurate" 1d100 ⇒ 6

So, looks like it bypassed both obstacles but isnt' "reasonably accurate"... where does it go?

Or was I supposed to add those up to make me 100% guaranteed to miss? :D

Should have been more clear. 1-25 hits the wall, 26-50 goes too high, 51-100 hits reasonably accurately. Since your first roll was a 75, that's what we'll use. It hits reasonably accurately.

The gnome launches a fireball blindly, a dangerous move that excites the crowd to no end. It explodes on the other side, scorching Raspin and Saria.

DC 19 to save for half of 39 damage.

Ok. I have access now. I had to click on the Share button and copy/paste the link into another tab.

To move your picture...Click on it and you will see a menu bar appear above it. Move your cursor to the right of the little black arrow and it will turn into a hand with all fingers spread apart (not just one finger pointing up). You should be able to click and drag your picture.

Round 1, Innitiate 6

Stepping out and seeing the crowd, Inscidia is fully aware that she is expossed wearing little while she blows a few sensual kissed towards the crowd. Not seeing any of her so-called opponents just yet, she goes for an aggresive move.

Breaking into a full run, she leaps across barriers then falls down low, flipping over minor inconveniences, twistng and tumbling over and around cover.

As she passes her team mates, she blows them each a good luck kiss and a wink, "Remember, I can take it, so let them have it. . ."

Double Move to area 10 S, taking a little extra time to show off to the crowd.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23

See a freaking dragon, and knowing that it sees her, she is a little uncertain. Not scarred, but definetly not expecting to see that. "Um, guys, since when did they allow dragons. Guys. . .?"

Filled in a little of he map too. Hope that is ok.

Round 2; Initiative 22
Sammy watches the agile lady leap over the wall with ease and then run to the wall beside his team. As he wheels around Shadowtooth to face her she looks up and sees him. He smiles widely as his legs squeeze against Shadowtooth and he screams, “Ya!” as he charges towards her lowering his lance.

(Swift Action) Sammy’s lance begins to emit faint whisps of smoke as he lowers it to charge: Arcane Strike.

Hold on a sec, so your dragon icon is both your characters? I didn't know that or I would have stopped and grappled it rather than double moving. All but the Lance and the second claw hits. Also if the mount is charging for the Pounce, doesn't that mean either you do not get a Lance attack or your mount stops to far away for the Pounce?

Yeah, he made a Ride check to mount it as a free action. He can make the lance attack before the pounce, but he is now adjacent (unless utilizing Ride-by Attack).

Thats fine, I just didn't know it represented both of them on the map or I would have acted differenty.

Male Elf wizard 5(div and ench restricted) conjuration spec

I do think better introductions are in order for future combats. Things such as what weapons people are holding should be known. As for the mounted thing the rider occupies every space the mount does. If a rider does not have his own icon it is safe to assume he is mounted.

@Dermot:I am not going to metagame, but you should spoiler potions. :)

Withdraw to D7, going all the way around the pits. The first square doesn't count for AoO, and being 5ft high I should be out of range of the Lance otherwise, is that correct?
