Creatures you can have around for long periods of time, like a paladin's special mount or a summoner's eidolon, I'll allow to be with you before the buffing round.
As for strategy, if you want a day or two to email each other about it after you find out who you're going to be teamed up with, I won't mind.
*scheming laugh*

Question for you veteran players...Would the spell Mage Armor continue to function for a Druid while wildshaped? I was considering quaffing a Potion of Mage Armor during the buffing rounds, but I wasn't sure if the bonus would go away (like armor bonuses from physical armor goes away) when I wildshaped..
Thanks.
Sir George |
That seems legit. It's a magical effect on you, not a tangible piece of armor. I don't see anything in the wild shape ability that says you can't have an armor bonus to your AC. It's just not easily come by, is all.
Will we be allowed to purchase things after our teams are decided (if we have teams)? For example, Kaze has with him a scroll of Good Hope. I bought a potion of Good Hope, but that's not needed if he casts his scroll. Can I buy something else after I end up on Kaze's team, or should I just buy something else now and hope to end up on Kaze's team?

Alright, my new char is finished and ready for action!
It seems we have all been taking a break lately but I think it's now time that we put together a list of participants so we at least know who is still in and what kind of numbers we are dealing with.
Just drop a post stating you are still wanting to take part and what character you will be using and I will put together a list. Thanks!
Dragonborn3 |
Otm-Shank humbly submitting Lord Elric the Wanderer, professional dragon slayer, to the arena.
I realize that not all of us will get to compete against the dragons but I think my build should hold up in PvP just as well.
Latent Psion: Where does it come from and what does it do?
How do I add a picture so I can tell where the dragon(s?) will be on the map?
EDIT: I will say this in advance: No playtest classes.

Sorry, I had not noticed that it was from the Legacy of Fire Players guide. The PFSRD Feat DB can be hard to read sometimes... It was listed as a race trait for Humans(Vudrani) and it give a +2 on saving throws vs mind-affecting effects. I can pick something different if you would prefer?
Otm-Shank |
I'll add my name to the list.
Arena Candidates
-------------------------
Torinath: Will Scarlet O'hara(or a healer)
Otm-Shank: Lord Elric
Flamethrower49: Sir George
Eben TheQuiet: Kaze
MoFiddy: Kane Stonepaw (MoFiddy's Gladiator profile)
So is this all the interest we have left? With only 5 players we might be able to run the dragon encounter with everyone?
Dragonborn3 |
They are definitely different types of dragons, but I think 6 gladiators would be a bit much. I did figure out how I could handle it a bit easier(divine inspiration you could say, Bahamut be blessed) though. Just waiting for the go ahead from everyone fighting.
And I still need to know how to add pics to the arena site.
DM Barcas |
Go into Insert -> Drawing. Hit the picture button to add a picture. Click on it, then grab the square in the bottom right corner, then pull that to the desired size.
My magus will likely be a crit/dex-based tiefling, using shocking grasp pretty frequently. Since they added the new Spellstrike and Recall Spell rules on the Blog, I presume that I'll use those.
I'll add him tonight. I'm doing an overtime shift this morning, then an eye appointment in the afternoon, and class in the evening.

I think Dragonborn has said that he doesn't want playtest classes for this round...

Bah! My arena, my rules!
Okay, I'll make something else.
We have:
MoFiddy - Druid 8

Flamethrower - Paladin 8
Otm-Shank - Inquisitor 8
Torinath - Fighter 8 or Paladin 2/Oracle 6
I'm thinking halfling warslinger, possibly barbarian 8. Maybe Fighter or Ranger. I'll have it more nailed down soon.

I think we should be alright without emails for this one. As far as buffs, if we can catch a glimpse of our opponents during the buffing stage I can hit us with resist energy for whatever seems most appropriate. Besides that I am using heroism and am not sure about my last buff.

** spoiler omitted **
I'll make an avatar for Will shortly.

Quick question since we're about to discuss tactics and specifics. DB3, how do you want us to handle character knowledge pertaining to dragons? Should we assume our characters know its baseline capabilities? Should we make some rolls to establish our knowledge? I'm specifically talking about it's frightful presence thing, senses, spell-like and supernatural abilities, etc.
I ask because it will heavily influence spell selection, gear, and tactics.
Also, I'm fine discussing tactics here, but is it weird to clutter up this specific sub-forum with this convo? I'm not sure I know what is proper board ettiquite in this situation.
Dragonborn3 |
I'm fine with people making Knowledge checks to see what they know about dragons. Common knowledge(like color = evil) you can know automatically.
To avoid situations like last rounds Tentacles + Cloud, there will be an opaque wall between the combatants.
Edit: Is there anyway to add a comment to a picture, like was done for the blue and red squares? I'd like to name the dragons.
Elric the Wanderer |
Ok, in order to get a baseline.
Knowledge(Arcana) : 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (9) + 16 = 25
What does this tell me/us about dragons in general?
Where will this opaque wall be? Will it simply close off the starting areas? If so, when will it be lifted? Or will it divide the whole arena at the beginning? Will we have any chance to get a look at our opponents before/during the buffing rounds or will we be going in blind besides knowing we are facing dragons?
NPC d'Eben |
So we're up to a 27 so far on Knowledge: Arcana to identify abilities/weaknesses of dragons... anyone else with the skill willing to push our total up with Aid Anothers? (though i don't even know if anyone else has the skill, but hey, it' worth asking.)
____
ONce we know how much information our characters have about the dragons, I'll make spell choice and gear changes.
Dragonborn3 |
Okay, let's see if I can do this right...
All Chromatic and Metallic dragons have a frightful presence that get's larger and more difficult to ignore as the grow older. They can see in the dark and can even sense where you are if they are blind or you are invisible.
They have spells and spell-like abilities that vary depending on the type of dragon and age.
Black Bragons are immune to acid.
Blue Dragons are immune to electricity
Green Dragons are immune to acid.
Red Dragons are immune to fire, but are hurt more by cold.
White Dragons are immune to cold but are hurt more by fire.
Brass Dragons are immune to fire but are hurt more by fire.
Bronze Dragons are immune to electricity.
Copper Dragons are immune to electricity.
Gold Dragons are immune to fire but are hurt more by cold.
Silver Dragons are immune to acid and cold, are hurt more by fire, and have a breath weapon that can paralyze.
Hmm... would anyone like to try a DC 25 Diplomacy check to gather information?
NPC d'Eben |
Kaze (yes, the bard) doesn't have Diplomacy.
Modified stats (I needed more skill points for arcane skills & Intimidate; dropped dex by 2 at creation--ouch)
--> this adjusted stuff all over the place
re-allocated my favored class bonus to all skill points instead of HP
Picked up (and maxed out) Intimidate, Knowledge (Arcana) and Spellcraft
Dropping the Wand of Cure Light Wounds
Dropping the Lesser Rod of Silent Megamagic
Dropping the Shield of Faith
Dropping the Enhancement to the Mithril Shirt
Reduce Enhancement on Cloak of Resistance to +2
.
Buy 50 enchanted arrows (all +1 enhancement with an additional +1 price bonus equivalent enhancement)
--> 20 Seeking, 10 Frost, 10 Flaming, 5 Undead Bane, 5 Magical Beast Bane
2.5 + 300 + 8000
net change +1497.5 (1000 + 750 + 50 + 3000 + 5000 - 8302.5)
Still looking into helpful gear changes.
Based on the fact that fear could potentially be crippling for our crew, he'll be starting the fight with Rallying Cry up, but in case he rolls poorly, I've equipped him with Remove Fear as a spell on top of the Good Hope scroll he'll be group buffing us all with in prep rounds.
Also, I'll self-buff with See Invisibility in case our opponents try to open invisible, and I have Glitterdust prepped.
I'll also prep Haste and be ready to get that on as many of us as possible once the gates open. It can't be pre-cast, so that's the best i can do.
i'l have access to Cure Moderate but not anything above that, so we may still need a serious healer.. i'm more of a clutch or support healer.
Keep in mind, I have a spell that will (as an immediate action) give someone a +1 bonus to a roll they just made. So if you miss a DC by 1, please call out for that spell, and Kaze will oblige if he can.
Also, I switched my bow to a Dragon Bane bow, and picked up 50 varied enchanted arrows, from seeking to flaming to a couple of other bane variants.
Elric, are you going to prep the spell that lets you heal a single person from range? You should look into that if you haven't already.
I would love some feedback on Kaze's build, purpose, and spell/ability selection and use. If you have something you think he'd do well that i haven't thought of, speak up! I'm still ironing out the specific numbers on my build based on a stat change I made, so some of my modifiers may be off by a point or two. I'm looking for more general feedback than that, however.
Sir George |
For Sir George's part, his plan is pretty much charge a lot and hope his targets are evil. Not a lot of tactical options. Though I do have a few spells I can muster, probably mostly of the personal buff variety, though if anybody sees an appropriate party buff that I should take, let me know.
As far as Frightful Presence goes, sticking within ten feet of me should give you a good bonus on your save. That is probably up to the vagaries of initiative, but I'd be happy to hold my action if it gives you a better number. (Or if it gives me a better shot at a charge.)
If anybody has any advice for me, I'd be happy to hear it. I'll commence hardcore build analysis and cooperation tonight, now that we know everybody involved. Since we do have a Good Hope on our team, I can dispense with that potion, so I have a consumable slot available. Perhaps a Paladin scroll...? If any such thing fits.
