Round 3: Revised Magus Discussion

Sovereign Court

I'd asked before to remember the dippers. This new version of the Magus happily seems to be a good compromise on the dipping. Before there just wasn't that much incentive to be a fighter or a rogue and take a level or two of Magus, but now with the arcane pool you can compensate for the lack of BAB and get a few spells to add a bit of magical flavor to add to your character. I look forward to trying something like a fighter 2/magus 2/rogue 2 at some point. A nice mix of different abilities to give some versatility to a character.

It looks like you could go up to about level 4 with dipping and it still be worthwhile to mix and match with other classes. The first two levels help with being able to get some magical effects in and then add some spiking damage with spell strike. Level 3 of Magus can give you a magical/martial spin depending on the kind of arcana you pick. And level 4 of Magus gives you access to level 2 spells that can open up some more interesting utility and control spells to diversify the characters options.

I know that the Pathfinder doesn't emphasize multi-classing the way 3.5 did, and that it could be argued that it's all a sub-optimal trap as is with the Magus, but my main game is low level E6 type of stuff, and so having viable ways of shaking up the single track classes is something I'm always looking for.

The Exchange

The Free Hand Fighter from the APG seems a natural choice for multi-classing with Magus. Take the Maneuver Mastery (Disarm) Arcana and you've not even dipped his BAB for all those Disarm related features the Free Hand Fighter gets.

I'd generally want to take my Magus levels to 5 so that I can use my Arcane Pool to add all those nice 'effects' onto my weapon.

If I were to take Magus as far as 5, I'd definitely consider a 6th level for the extra Arcane Pool point and a second arcana. Maybe Arcane Accuracy.

Taking only 5 levels, however, Free Hand Fighter into Duelist looks interesting. 5 levels of Free Hand Fighter gives you Singleton and then Duelist keeps your INT relevant.

Yup the dipping isway more fun now, and I wanted Fighter Training to kick in sooner, but that´s just not on the table when you consider dipping.

Dark Archive

Even a couple level dip would not be bad for a fighter or Rogue that has a bit of Intelligence, say 14 or so. Even just two levels would be enough for a bunch of level 0 and 1 spells and Spell Strike.
